- Chapter 13.1: The Trials of Jacqueline Spoonbender
“Oh, is it Anima? Have you come to pick me up?”
As I was moving through the forest in my wheelchair, aiming for a change of pace at Yuuto-sama’s dungeon, a monster named Anima, who was being called out from the shade of the trees, appeared.
She nodded heavily in response to my question and began to lead the way.
Anima, who seems to be a unique monster of the Faham type, has arms growing from her chest, one large eye, and moves by constantly hopping due to having only one leg. Honestly, I couldn’t understand why she transformed into such a form.
Though the demon race has many monsters resembling humans, I was utterly puzzled as to why they would lead a very human-like life only to look like this.
The contract was completed smoothly afterward, but Yuuto-sama requested we wait until the monsters’ intelligence reached grade C.
Monsters with low judgment skills are still considered children, and he didn’t want to invite them to battle until their self-judgment abilities had matured. …That’s way beyond naïve. For a dungeon master, he’s pretty third-rate.
I didn’t feel obligated to listen, but I accepted his condition because I could earn a good amount in just a few days if things went well in Yuuto-sama’s dungeon. After all, we, too, have our preparations and timings.
“Welcome to my abode, Ms. Jacqueline. I’ve set up the teleportation you mentioned. It’s very convenient.”
When I arrived at the dungeon, Yuuto-sama greeted me.
Teleportation is a facility that transports individuals with specific magical wavelengths between the core room and the entrance. Although it requires a high DP, considering its daily convenience, it’s indispensable.
“Yes. Without it, with my wheelchair, just entering and leaving this dungeon would take the entire day… By the way, have you not named this dungeon?”
I was annoyed since he kept referring to it as ‘this dungeon’ or ‘that dungeon.’
“No, I haven’t. Does everyone name theirs?”
Yuuto-sama asked while setting me up within the teleportation range,
“There are times when adventurers name it for you once it’s open to them, but there are also cases where the owner names it themselves. Typically, the name is based on the region combined with the dungeon’s concept.”
“Speaking of which, where is this place exactly?”
“You… never wondered that for ten years?”
“Not really.”
Yuuto-sama said, looking a bit embarrassed. He really must have only been concerned about his monsters.
“This is the southern part of a country called Ragnel.”
“Oh… in that case, let’s call it ‘Labyrinth of Ragnel.'”
The dungeon’s name was promptly and instead arbitrarily decided. He seems to only care about his monsters!
“Alright, let’s get going then.”
After Yuuto-sama’s swift naming, the teleportation activated.
Once I confirmed that we had arrived without issues, I bowed to all the monsters.
“Let’s have a productive day today,” I said.
I visited the Labyrinth of Ragnel that day to improve their living conditions.
The combat power Yuuto-sama’s dungeon holds is extraordinary. My dungeon is a B-ranked dungeon that has lasted for 300 years, a grand labyrinth that even the country wouldn’t lightly intervene in.
For a non-boss D-ranked monster to challenge me, who has the buffs of a grand labyrinth’s boss monster, is inconceivable… and shouldn’t happen.
The only reason I could win last time was to use a surprise-attack item and exploit the enemy’s lack of knowledge. I’m not sure how it would go if we fought head-on.
So, I need to help them fill in their knowledge and experience gaps to defeat Ryuujou-sama. That’s why I’m here to audit and correct any mistakes.
I mean, I know there will be a plethora of errors even before auditing. With that level of combat power, they could dominate this forest if they wanted to. Their current challenge is how to draw in enemies efficiently. Yet, they keep staying cooped up.
“I have a time limit as well. I hope you all get stronger soon, so I’ll inspect just today.”
“Of course. We appreciate it, Spoonbender-san.”
Saying that, we shook hands. Up until that point, everything was fine.
“First, let’s start with morning exercises. Radio calisthenics number one…”
“Wha!?”
As Yuuto-sama began speaking, the monsters started moving in peculiar ways.
“…What are those movements?”
Holding my head, I asked Yuuto-sama, who was now hopping around.
“We’re exercising to maintain our health.”
I can see that! Yuuto-sama spread his arms like an idiot and flailed them around just as ridiculously. Is this some rain dance?
“So, you’re about to gather DP. You’ll be exercising anyway, won’t you?”
Despite my questioning, Yuuto-sama continued moving stubbornly like a wound-up doll.
“Today is a day of lessons, so there’s no exercise.”
“What do you mean, a ‘day of lessons’?”
“Of course, we exercise after school but sit and study throughout the afternoon.”
No, it would be best if you were hunting monsters and earning DP.
…I had no idea it was this bad. As a Dungeon Master, this man isn’t just third-rate; he’s not doing anything resembling a Dungeon Master’s duties!
However, I couldn’t begin with sharp criticisms since today was dedicated to my inspection. I forcefully held back the words “Get to work!” that were on the tip of my tongue.
With that, the lesson began. The first subject seemed to be biology.
“Please open your textbooks on monster studies.”
At that command, the monsters simultaneously opened their books. No, share the books! This is a waste of DP. I felt the phantom sensation of restless legs.
“Recently, our new dungeon ally Jacqueline shared an interesting perspective. It’s said that monsters are influenced by the god who designed them. Today, let’s investigate the god who designed each species.”
And so, they began calling out specific pages from a thick monster encyclopedia, and everyone delved into reading.
…The ability to read must mean that all the monsters here have an intelligence of at least a C+ rank.
For D-class monsters, it’s not particularly unusual. Still, it would be rare for relatively less intelligent monster races, such as beasts, aquatic species, and amorphous species of D rank, to converse and read.
“It seems Yuuto-sama has indeed prioritized training their intelligence.”
Choosing to raise a monster’s intelligence is not a decision one should often make. No matter how high their intelligence is, if an enemy monster has superior resistance, it won’t matter. Moreover, as long as the Dungeon Master plays the role of the brain unless they plan on significantly expanding their frontline, there’s no need for a commander.
…Furthermore, there’s also the possibility of betrayal, just as I’m contemplating.
However, that didn’t seem to be a concern for the time being. It was evident to me that all 13 monsters present deeply admired Yuuto-sama.
Hearing their names as part of the lesson made them joyful. It’s great that they have such a kind Dungeon Master.
About an hour passed, and when Yuuto-sama finished speaking, it was break time. All the monsters immediately gathered around him. In a human school, this scene would be endearing. However, with demons of various sizes and appearances picking, it looked more like they were about to attack and devour him.
