- Chapter 12: Person from Another World
The room was a mishmash of various architectural styles. Papers were strewn about, and in the center stood the Dungeon Core, surrounded by several layers of barriers.
…This room is also where I, Jacqueline Spoonbender, was born.
“So, you’ve been destroying dungeons near Ragunel, huh?”
While gazing at a celestial body, not of Etina, my Master, Ryuujou-sama, inquired.
Another world. Few are aware of its existence. But having conquered numerous dungeons, I am familiar with it. I might not know all, but at least every Dungeon Master is undoubtedly from another world.
Each seems to be summoned from a different otherworldly realm. I had no recollection of the “The Earth” where Yuuto-sama hailed from.
“Yes, indeed. I have brought its core here.”
Before raiding Yuuto-sama’s dungeon, I handed over two cores from my conquered dungeons to my Master.
“Well done.”
He whispered words of gratitude in such a low tone that I wouldn’t have heard it if I didn’t have the heightened hearing of a monster.
Then, Master allowed his Dungeon Core to absorb the cores I brought. A dungeon can convert items with magical powers inserted into its body into DP. But when another dungeon’s heart is absorbed, it can gain an immense amount of DP.
However, even with such a vast DP, no hint of joy was visible on Ryuujou-sama’s face. And naturally, he felt no guilt for hunting down a fellow Dungeon Master. He has been that way since I first became aware of the world.
“Anything else to do?”
I asked Ryuujou-sama. To advance my betrayal without him noticing, I must continuously produce results.
“The number of adventurers intruding is decreasing. I need you to promote it.”
“Looking at the numbers that emerged from the core, Ryuujou-sama commented.”
The dungeon named “Tower of Nadinalesre,” where Ryuujou-sama reigns as the Master and where I was born, is a colossal dungeon recognized internationally as a B-rank, having existed for about 300 years. Treasures set up, vendettas, and treatments for rare diseases obtainable only from the jail – there are enough reasons for treasure hunters to venture into the dungeon. Yet, that’s still not enough.
No matter how many hunters come, neither the Master nor I ever think the dungeon might be conquered. If I felt like it, the power gap between humans and the jail is so significant that I alone could destroy a country.
The reason I don’t is simply that there’s no advantage in doing so. I don’t want to draw the attention of several legions where humans who have forsaken their humanity for power gather.
“Right. Let’s place a C-rank item chest on each floor. Ambush whoever picks it up and recovers the item. If you do it without killing them, it will cause a commotion and spread rumors.”
“Understood.”
As a Dungeon Master, Ryuujou-sama is top-notch. He’s always vigilant, never wasteful.
…That’s why my desire to defeat him is purely out of personal greed. It’s not incorrect to say that I live by the principle of cutting out everything, as Yuuto-sama once mentioned.
But it’s a relief. The order allows for activities outside the dungeon. If done skillfully, I might be able to visit Yuuto-sama’s jail secretly…
I’m starting to feel as if I’m cheating. In reality, I’m committing a far graver betrayal.
“Also, show me your legs.”
Ryuujou-sama said casually, as if he was reviewing a document that had just been completed that day.
“…Yes.”
I moved the blanket to reveal my aged lower half. I’ve always hated this moment since my body had been attached.
“They are indeed dead. I wanted to use this lower half again since it was perfect.”
It’s been 200 years, of course. They would have decayed, I thought but never uttered. And despite him having checked the state of my legs countless times, he would check them periodically as if expecting them to come back to life miraculously.
…No, the reason is apparent. The only successful result of his 300 years of effort to create a human is, to this day, my legs. Perhaps he needs to reassure himself that his actions weren’t in vain by inspecting my legs. Though, their current state isn’t much to look at.
“You’ve passed 100 years already. They should’ve rotted away by now.”
It’s been 200 years, Ryuujou-sama. Do you know how much effort I’ve put into preserving the youthfulness of this lower half? Although keeping them with magic after death was somewhat more accessible, there was a time when I could not bear my body’s decay. I was near insanity, desperately trying every anti-aging method available.
“Yes, I’ve been maintaining them with preservation magic.”
We’ve had this conversation numerous times before.
…Being a Dungeon Master is tricky, as living another year is challenging. But his clouded eyes revealed that maintaining sanity is even more difficult in a long-standing dungeon.
Every day, he faced threats to his life and had to take lives to survive. In such an environment, he had lost sight of everything except his goal of recreating his once-deceased lover.
Although he is a Dungeon Master, his choice is to recreate a human lover from another world. However, resurrecting a lover from another realm is impossible in reality. He was even ready to sacrifice me, who was supposed to be his ally.
Did he grow tired of me? Despite there not being a single good thing in this dungeon, I strangely still had lingering attachments, which puzzled even me.
“Right. Let’s look for the next body. Also, find an upper half. If we attach it properly and use skills, there’s a chance they might fuse.”
“…Yes. Yes, of course.”
To tear apart and connect bodies… It would no longer be human if that were to result in life. But saying such things probably wouldn’t get through to him anymore.
