Chapter 16: First Sleepover (2)
After dropping off my stuff, we headed to the supermarket.
To anyone watching, we looked like a couple.
But I couldn’t fully enjoy it.
The reality was—“owner and pet,” “predator and prey.”
Anger her, and certain “death” awaited.
…Still.
The girl beside me was cute, beautiful, almost dreamlike.
Someone I’d normally never even talk to was right here, next to me.
(For now… no sign she’s going to kill me. If she really wanted to, she’d have done it already.)
Convincing myself, I tossed ingredients and drinks into the basket.
As we finished shopping and headed back to the apartment—
“Hey, Towa!”
A voice called out suddenly. It was Maki, a girl from our class.
“Oh, Maki. Fancy meeting you here.”
Towa flashed a smile. But I caught the pressure lurking behind it.
“You’re with him!? Why… wait, no way.”
“Sorry, but keep it quiet, okay? We just started dating~ Right?”
Towa glanced at me.
Her eyes silently pressed, You get it, right?
“Uh, oh… really? Hmm… well, whatever. Don’t wanna intrude. Later.”
Maki left with a knowing smirk.
My heart raced.
How much did she buy? How much did we fool her?
“Let’s watch something.”
Towa said casually.
“…Any recommendations?”
“Your pick’s fine. Just keep it under three hours.”
Walking side by side down the night street, Towa spoke in an innocent tone.
※
—On the way back from the supermarket to the apartment.
Passing through the shopping district’s lights, we hit a dimly lit street.
Her footsteps stopped.
Ahead, under an LED streetlight, a figure stood out.
No… not one. Two, three, more—several shadows waited for us.
No other people around.
An eerie silence blanketed the street.
They closed in slowly.
One of them—a girl—spoke to Towa.
“Towa… what’s he to you? Tell me.”
Her gaze was challenging.
Towa pulled my arm close, grinning wickedly.
“Maki, he’s my boyfriend, obviously. My exclusive boyfriend.”
—B-Boyfriend!?
My heart nearly leapt out of my throat.
The girl called Maki curled her lips into a cold smile.
“Hand him over. He’s our ‘favorite.’ Everyone’s idol.”
In that instant, the others split their mouths open, baring sharp fangs.
Their eyes glowed blood-red, monstrous outlines emerging in the dark.
They lunged at Towa—
But she didn’t move an inch.
The next moment, her arm swept through the air.
With that, the monsters’ bodies turned to ash, scattering into the night sky.
Only Maki remained.
Towa narrowed her red eyes, her lips curling.
“…I knew you were non-human.”
Maki’s eyes blazed with rage.
“I’ll kill you.”
A pitch-black aura erupted from her body.
Her skin turned bronze, black wings sprouted from her back, and sinister horns grew from her forehead.
The girl’s form fully transformed into a monster.
But Towa responded with a voice full of delight.
“Nice, nice! Let’s do this, Maki. …But he’s my man. Mine alone.”
Shadow cloaked Towa’s body.
A dark aura shook the ground.
Massive black wings spread from her back, her arms became claws, and she morphed into a “shadow beast” barely human.
Then—they collided.
A deafening roar.
Towa’s shadow seized Maki’s head, slamming it into a building wall.
Concrete shattered, sparks flew.
Maki’s head scraped against the wall, grinding away.
Towa’s shadow bit into her neck.
Black, blood-like liquid sprayed, dancing in the air.
“Kuhahahaha!”
Towa’s shadow screamed in ecstasy, thrusting both hands skyward.
As if piercing the night sky—
…The one-sided slaughter ended abruptly.
My legs trembled.
All I could do was watch.
