Chapter 2: School

“It’s dangerous to suddenly dart out like that! You could’ve gotten yourself killed if we were still a generation ago, you know?”
Huh? Why doesn’t this car have any tires?
Looking around, I noticed none of the cars had tires and even though I’d been run over, I wasn’t seriously injured.
“I’m sorry.”
“Listen, I’ve already contacted the police and the fire department, okay? Are you feeling alright?”
I checked over my body, but from what I could tell, nothing seemed to be wrong.
“I think I’m okay.”
“I see. In that case, until the police and ambulance get here, you should rest over there for a bit.”
“Thank you.”
Saying that, the woman walked off and left me behind.
Wait, isn’t this technically a hit-and-run?
Crap, she got away.

After a short while, a police car and an ambulance arrived.
“Are you hurt?”
A female police officer called out to me.
“I think I’m probably fine.”
“Is that so? Just to be safe, let’s get you checked at the hospital. I’ll go with you, so please get in the ambulance.”
“Okay.”
Why did I think cars were supposed to have tires? Even the police car and ambulance didn’t have any. Still, something else bugged me…
Why is this police officer wearing such a needlessly short skirt?
With the female police officer accompanying me, I was brought to a large hospital.

I was examined by a female doctor.
“There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with your body. Here’s the medical certificate.”
Saying that, the female doctor handed the document to the police officer.
“However, the issue is that there’s no biometric registration for this boy and judging by how he talks, it seems like he has amnesia and doesn’t even know his own name. What should we do?”
“His name was sewn into his clothes, so we know that much. Do we have an estimate on his age?”
“Yes, based on the high-performance CRT results, we estimate he’s 16 years old.”
“I’ll contact the Men’s Protection Department. He’s probably a student from the school, so I’ll take him there now.”
“That sounds like a good idea. The hospital will also submit a report.”
“Thank you very much. Well then, shall we go? Ceres.”
“Ceres?”
“That’s what it said on your clothes! Ceres Grantz.”
“Um, can I ask something? Aren’t you going to arrest the person who hit me?”
“Haa~? Why would we need to arrest her?”
“Isn’t it a hit-and-run?”
“Your memory must really be scrambled. Cars are operated by automatic control systems now. As long as traffic laws are followed, they’re perfectly safe. But you suddenly ran out into the street. That makes you the one at fault. ‘Hit-and-run’? That’s practically an obsolete term now. If someone jumps in front of a car and gets hit, the person is the perpetrator. Even elementary schoolers know that.”
“I see…”
It really did seem like my memory was a mess. I always thought that if someone got hit by a car, it was the car’s fault.
Why is there such a huge disconnect between my memory and reality?

BK District School.
This was a full-boarding school for students aged 8 to 18. According to the female police officer, every child in that age range in this area attended this school.
Yeah, my memory must really be messed up. In my head, I was wondering, “Why don’t people live with their families?”
The police officer escorted me to the senior division of the school building. She knocked on the staff room door, and inside, a female teacher was waiting.
“I’m Marianne, the head teacher of the high school division. Are you really one of our students? You’re not registered anywhere.”
“Uh… I think my memory’s all scrambled…”
“I see. Well, normally, all our students wear uniforms, but… Whatever. You’re a rare boy, so of course we’ll take you! Here, this is the admission acceptance form.”
Saying that, Marianne-sensei stamped the document and handed it to the police officer.
“Alright then, Ceres Grantz. From here on, you’re under the school’s care, so I’ll leave you with your teacher. Make sure you listen to her, okay?”
With that, the female police officer gave a polite bow to both Marianne-sensei and me, and then left the room.

Very confusing start.
