My Popular-as-Hell Best Friend Is Annoying, So I Want to Get Him a Girlfriend and Shut Him Up - Chapter 47 & 48 & 49
Chapter 47: Ai-chan’s Guidance
“Well, I’m off to talk with Aoyagi-senpai.”
After our reset handshake, Rando-dono heads back into the classroom.
Her thanks to me were just a side note—she needs to focus on pursuing Uryu.
“Um, Hirose-senpai?”
I’m about to follow her when Ai-chan calls out. She didn’t say much during our talk, so does she have something specific for me?
“S-Sorry!”
“Huh? Why’re you apologizing?”
“W-Well, I have a question, and I don’t mean to corner you, but if it feels that way, I wanted to apologize first…!”
“Uh, I’m not following, but go ahead and ask.”
At my response, Ai-chan glances around nervously, ensuring no one’s nearby. Then, she leans close, covering her mouth, and whispers in my ear.
“Did you dump water on Natori-senpai?”
She trembles like a scared animal even after asking. Got it—that’s why she apologized and checked our surroundings.
Natori Mayoi said she apologized to Rando-dono. For Rando-dono and Ai-chan, her sudden change of heart must’ve been shocking. It’s natural they’d wonder how it happened. Since it’s not something to dredge up, Ai-chan probably apologized first. Even if my methods weren’t noble, they helped her best friend.
“Nope, didn’t dump water. Did something closer to a lecture, I guess.”
After a moment’s thought, I soften my words to avoid scaring Ai-chan.
No need to burden her with guilt by telling the truth. Let her think I just gave Natori Mayoi a stern talking-to and set her straight.
“…Huh?”
Ai-chan’s face twists in confusion, as if my answer didn’t sit right. Did I say something weird?
“What’s up, Ai-chan?”
“No, it’s just… that feels a bit off.”
“Off?”
“You acted based on Articles 196 and 197 of the Code of Hammurabi, right?”
“What?”
A world history term pops out of Ai-chan’s mouth, catching me off guard with a surprised grunt. Did I mention that to her? Maybe I did.
“I got curious and looked it up. Those articles talk about a revenge law: if you destroy someone’s eye, you lose yours; if you break someone’s bone, yours gets broken.” (T/N: An Eye for an Eye.)
Whoa, Ai-chan actually researched what I said? Not letting curiosity slide is a sign of brilliance—she might go far.
“But the revenge law is supposed to follow the principle of returning harm equivalent to what the victim suffered, right?”
I’m marveling at Ai-chan’s diligence when her words about the revenge law’s principle hit, freezing me in place.
“So, um, in this case, following the revenge law would mean dumping water back on her, right? I’m not trying to criticize you at all, I swear!”
“…”
“But you said it was more like a lecture, so I wondered if that was truly equivalent…”
“…”
“I mean, you were so confident when you said it, so you must’ve thought it through, right?”
“…”
“S-Sorry! That was nosy of me! No way you’d share wrong info, right? My bad!”
Ai-chan’s innocent barrage stabs my heart. This must be what “overkill” means, I think quietly.
Was what I did equivalent to the water-dumping? In terms of methods, it was way harsher, but I didn’t cause actual harm. It’s a vague mix—high in intensity, low in tangible damage.
One thing’s clear: it was definitely not equivalent.
“…I’m so sorry!!”
“W-What?! What’s wrong all of a sudden?!”
I bow to Ai-chan with fierce energy. I’m so embarrassed—I want to crawl into a hole and never come out.
“Ai-chan-senpai, I’m gonna restart in the next life!!”
“W-W-Wait!! Where are you going?!”
“To the other side of the sky!!”
“No way!! There’s only nothingness there!!”
Until the morning homeroom bell rang, I kept pondering ways to ascend to the heavens.
Chapter 48: Oh, What a Noisy Scene
T/N: This is the scene where Yukiya told Uryu about the favor of calling Natori over.
“So why outdoors?! Didn’t I say a place where we could be alone?!”
“You never said that! You asked about a good confession spot, didn’t you?!”
“I didn’t! I asked where you usually get confessed to!”
“Then what do you even mean by ‘Didn’t I say a place where we could be alone?’!? You never said anything like that in the first place! Why are you acting like it’s a given!?”
“Don’t you know the phrase ‘morning orders, evening changes’?! People’s needs shift moment to moment!”
“You asked me for a confession spot JUST THREE MINUTES AGO! Does your internal clock make the sun set in three minutes?! Even instant ramen would panic!!”
“Instant ramen’s got nothing to do with this!! And anyway, two and a half minutes is enough for ramen—don’t obsess over three!!”
“What are you even talking about?! Weren’t we discussing where to call Natori-san over?!”
“Then you suggested cliché crap like behind the gym! How the hell am I supposed to ready some stuffs when there’s no desk to drop my items on!?”
“That’s the first I’m hearing that you even need a desk! Why do you drip-feed details?! Are you some ally character revealing the boss’s moves bit by bit? Just tell me everything upfront!!”
“Are you an idiot?! If you reveal all the boss’s moves at the start, it loses impact!! Nobody gets hyped if they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s what the ally mentioned earlier’!!”
“AS I SAID, STOP DRAGGING ON USELESS STUFF! So what?! You need a place to be alone with someone with a desk?!”
“That’s what I’ve been saying from the start!!”
“Like hell you were! Fine, then the old wing’s third or fourth floor should work, right?!”
“Why so half-assed?! Think about me more when you answer!!”
“That’s my line!! Is that an attitude you take when asking for a favor!?”
“Didn’t you say you’d do it for free?! Stop complaining and work!!”
“Oh, is that how it is?! Fine, I’ll call her to the old wing’s fourth floor!! Hardly anyone goes there, it’s got desks—perfect, right?!”
“Hey! Is that really okay?! A place that perfect for being alone—won’t she get suspicious and not show up?!”
“Then invite her yourself!! I can’t figure you out!!”
“As if I’d invite her!! You’re my lifeline—get that!!”
“Ugh, I shouldn’t have agreed to this!!”
Five minutes later, the two calmed down and decided to call Natori Mayoi to the old wing’s fourth floor.
T/N: GOD I LOVE THIS DUO. I wouldn’t mind if this ended as Yukiya x Uryu.
Chapter 49: Introduction
—How did it come to this?
If I think about reasons, there are plenty.
My family’s lax crisis management, the mess of someone else’s family drama, her unrelenting kindness—excuses are endless.
I didn’t invite her here with this in mind. She had nowhere to go, and I was just planning to fix her overly naive way of thinking.
It was supposed to be a lecture, my specialty, nothing more.
So how did it end up like this?
“…Are you really okay with doing nothing?”
Facing me in the same bed, she murmurs something that makes my head shake more.
—-The story rewinds to early June, the day after my reset greeting with Rando-dono.
