Chapter 58: The Student Council President and the New Rival

The ceremony drew near, and everyone returned to the classroom to sit in the seats assigned on the poster stuck to the front blackboard. Being assigned by student number, my seat ended up quite far away from Mana and the others. Then, glancing at the seat next to mine, I saw a familiar face. It was a man with black hair, a fairly tall build, and a gentle expression.

“You are in this class too, Ito?”

“Oh, Kamitsuru! Man, what a relief! Having you here saves me! If you weren’t here, those three would probably trigger another living hell.”

Ito. I didn’t know his first name, but it was Ito. He was the victim I had dragged into the nightmare that occurred when I stayed over at Misaki’s house. Since then, we had talked a bit, albeit briefly. He was someone I could probably call a friend.

“It saves me, too. I’m glad to have someone I know sitting next to me.”

“Looks like you’re pretty far away from those three, anyway. By the way, did you hear? We’re in the same class as Nonoa Tsurumaki from Stella☆Walker.”

“So it seems. I just hope I don’t get dragged into any trouble.”

“It’ll be fine. Even if you get dragged in, those three who love you to death will handle it somehow.”

“Idiot, I hate just constantly relying on them. It’s not exactly cool, you know?”

Ito knew that Muna and I were dating through the natural course of things. All in all, he was a good guy. Back when the rumors were flying, he had looked the other way, but he never looked down on me. For now, I felt quite at ease with him.

『We will now begin the entrance ceremony. New students, please gather in the gymnasium.』

Even during the ceremony, it seemed Tsurumaki-san was stealing glances at me the whole time. Perhaps Misaki had told her something. Muna and the others were acting normal though. And then, Rin-nee’s speech began.

“Everyone, welcome to our school. On behalf of Hashiro High School, including myself, Rin Togane, we welcome you all. Now, there is something I wish to convey to you. I desire nothing more than for all of you to have an enjoyable time at this high school. I will not tell you to be perfect or to devote yourselves to your studies. That is not my role. As your student representative, my only wish is that you enjoy yourselves. Hurt no one, and be hurt by no one. Beyond that, I desire nothing. Spending time with friends, falling in love. I sincerely hope that such commonplace happiness showers down upon all of you. Congratulations on your enrollment.”

It was the first time I had seen it. Standing there was a cool Rin-neechan I didn’t know. It wasn’t Rin-neechan; it was the Rin Togane everyone admired, the Student Council President.

“That concludes my remarks. Student Council President, Rin Togane.”

Thunderous applause echoed throughout the gymnasium. This was my childhood friend…… this incredible person. There was no way I could have felt sleepy. Every single word she spoke sank into my mind with undeniable force. Conversely, I didn’t remember much after that. The announcement of homeroom teachers for various subjects, and other trivial talk. The ceremony ended in a flash like that, and we returned to the classroom. The heat ignited in my heart by Rin-neechan’s speech still dominated my soul. To be honest, I think I was completely entranced. So that was the “perfect” Rin-neechan everyone demanded.

“President Togane’s speech was amazing! I mean, she’s really beautiful, isn’t she? Man! I wish I could be popular with a beauty like her.”

Ito said that to me after we returned to our seats. I felt quite proud. There was no way I wouldn’t be happy to hear my childhood friend being evaluated so highly. Shortly after, the homeroom teacher arrived, and the class went through brief self-introductions.

I finished my own self-introduction normally without standing out. I received an abnormal amount of applause from primarily three specific people, but I pretended not to notice. Once the introductions were over, there were brief explanations regarding the future, and then we were immediately dismissed.

We were currently waiting for Rin-neechan at the school gate.

“Hara-kun, good work today. Rin-san’s speech was wonderful, wasn’t it? I found myself completely captivated.”

“Me too. I’ve never seen Rin-neechan like that before.”

“Rin-chan really was an incredible person after all. I can’t believe someone like that is so close to us~”

“Whoa, Rin-san. Good work today.”

While we were waiting and talking about Rin-neechan, she was suddenly behind us before we knew it. What, is she a ninja? That’s scary.

“Thank you, Misaki. Good work on the entrance ceremony, everyone. Well? Do you think you’ll be able to settle into your new class?”

“Yes. We’re all in the same class, after all. I’m relieved that it looks like we’ll be able to enjoy ourselves again.”

“Based on my intuition, she’s the type of girl who will fall for Haa-kun. We won’t acknowledge anyone but us as Haa-kun’s girlfriend!!”

“For now, let’s head to karaoke like we discussed. We’ll have a small celebration.”

“Yeah! Let’s go!”
