ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
My clothes were decided fairly quickly. I had basically no sense of style at all, so I had Rin-neechan pick everything for me. Still, I thought it turned out pretty good. After that, I helped Rin-neechan pick out her clothes. Things like what kind of style she liked, or which of two options was better. We spent much more time on that than on mine, and by the time we finished, it was already noon.
No way. We left the house at 9:30… We actually spent two and a half hours just looking at clothes? That’s insane. There’s no way I could stay that long by myself.
“Sorry, Hakkun! I got too excited!”
“No, it’s fine. I got to see a lot of cute sides of you, Rin-neechan.”
“If it’s you, Hakkun, you can look at Rin as much as you want. Even naked.”
“I will never say that.”
Now that I’d gotten used to it, I started thinking… rather than yandere… wasn’t she just a pervert? Who turned my cute childhood friend into this? The answer: me.
“Staaare.”
“Rin-neechan, does this look good on me?”
After leaving the clothing store, we wandered around aimlessly. I was already wearing the black long coat I had just bought. Rin-neechan still had my scarf and jacket.
“Staaare.”
“Uh… um?”
“Hakkun. You are guilty of looking too good. Sentence: marriage.”
I wondered what was up with the intense staring, and then she suddenly hugged me with a straight face and said that. What kind of crime was “looking too good”? And why was the sentence marriage instead of arrest? And wasn’t she way too cute? She really was two years older than me, right? This person… or rather, this girl.
“Marriage, huh?”
“Yes, marriage!”
Saying that, she energetically clung to my arm. The stares from people around us were piercing. I was getting riddled from all sides.
“Rin-neechan, what if I told you to let go?”
“Hmm, maybe I’d cry really loudly.”
“…I think I’m getting hungry.”
I changed the subject.
“Ah, right. It’s already lunchtime. Let’s go eat somewhere! What do you want, Hakkun?”
“What do you want, Rin-neechan?”
“What Hakkun wants!”
This was a problem. If I treated this like a date, I wanted her to enjoy it too. Well, she’d be happy no matter what I did, though. I thought about going with what she wanted, but she threw it back to me. What was the right answer here? Well, Rin-neechan said she liked ramen, and it was cold right now, so something warm would be nice.
“Then let’s go get some ramen.”
“Hakkun… that’s 100 points! No, a perfect score! That made my heart skip! Let’s get married! It’s decided! We’re married now!”
“That’s way too fast!!”
That must’ve hit the mark. With hearts in her eyes, she rubbed against my arm like crazy. What was she, a cat? Ah, maybe Rin-neechan was really tired. Otherwise, there was no way she’d be this clingy. Then at least for today, I should let Rin-neechan relax. I needed to make sure she had fun. And while I was at it, I should practice acting cool.
We managed to get counter seats, so Rin-neechan let go of my arm. Though it seemed the intense staring would continue. She was staring at my face way more than at her phone, with a huge smile on her face.
If… if I like Rin-neechan. If I were to date her… Would everything up until now feel different? I still don’t get it. What is love, anyway?
“Hakkun, you’ve got something on your mind, don’t you? What are you worrying about?”
“You can tell?”
“Rin has always been watching you, Hakkun. It’s obvious.”
Maybe I could ask her. Rin-neechan would probably listen kindly.
“I was just thinking… what is love, anyway?”
“What’s gotten into you??”
“I know that you and the others really like me. And I want to respond to those feelings. But… I don’t understand what ‘liking someone’ really means.”
“I see, I see. Why is that?”
“Well, ‘liking someone’ is like… your heart racing, getting jealous, things like that, right?”
“Yeah, more or less. That’s how Rin feels about you, Hakkun.”
Right as we were talking, the ramen arrived at just the right timing. I figured I’d ask more while we walked back later. For the record, I ordered tonkotsu ramen, and Rin-neechan ordered Taiwan ramen.
“Hakkun, sorry, I’m going to the restroom for a bit.”
“Yeah, got it.”
After we finished eating, Rin-neechan went to the restroom.
This might be… my chance? Well, I wanted to practice this kind of move for tomorrow with Muna too. Alright, let’s do it.
The bill came out to a little over 2,000 yen. Thankfully, it didn’t hurt my wallet much. Still, I was a bit worried about how Rin-neechan would react when she came back. After all, today she had insisted on treating me for everything.
“Welcome back, Rin-neechan. I already paid.”
“100 points, Hakkun. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
Huh, that was more normal than I expected. I thought she’d force me into marriage again.
“Alright, back to your question. So why did you ask Rin about love?”
“I do feel things. Like jealousy, my heart racing, and a bit of possessiveness.”
“Mhm.”
“But… it’s not toward just one person. I feel that way toward all of you, including you, Rin-neechan. So I feel like calling that love would be… too insincere.”
Last night before going to sleep, I had thought about a lot of things. I reached an answer pretty quickly, but… it didn’t sit right with me. It felt too insincere. Could I really call that love?
“I see, I see. Hakkun, I’m not good at saying clever things. But honestly, that’s definitely love. You’re in love with all of us. You should accept that. Don’t deny it.”
“…I see. Yeah, I get it.”
“I don’t think that’s insincere at all. The fact that you’re struggling over it this much means you’re not insincere. And for me, and probably everyone else too… whether we date or not, just being mutually in love with Hakkun is more than enough to make us happy.”
“Are you really okay with that, Rin-neechan?”
“Yeah, I am. That’s how it should be. I always say I want to be number one, but… I love everyone too. So whoever you choose, I just want you to be happy. That’s how I truly feel. Oh, but if you say you fell for some random girl, I’ll kill you along with that girl.”
We had such a nice atmosphere going, and she completely ruined it at the end. Still… I felt like I was glad I talked to her. I felt a lot more refreshed.
“Thanks, Rin-neechan.”
“You’re welcome.”
“…I lo—”
“Bzzzt. Save that for tomorrow. Not now.”
When I tried to say it, she pressed a finger against my lips.
For tomorrow, huh.
