Chapter 14: The Uniform Date
When we got home from our date in Odaiba, a cake was waiting for us.
Mom had prepared it.
She’s a nurse, and apparently she absolutely had to go in for a night shift today. She’d left a present along with a letter saying she was sorry.
Dad, as usual, was going to be late.
“Even though it’s your birthday, everyone is so busy—!”
“It’s for work, so it can’t be helped. They’re working for our sake, after all.”
“Yeah… you’re right, we have to be grateful. But thanks to that, I got to spend your birthday alone with you, Onii-chan. So maybe I should be even more grateful than you are.”
My sister stood up, lit the candles on the cake, and turned off the lights in the room.
In beautiful, clear English, she sang “Happy Birthday to You.”
I found myself completely entranced by her lovely voice and her cute silhouette illuminated by the candlelight.
I was falling for my sister.
“O-Onii-chan?”
Puzzled that I wasn’t blowing out the candles, she called out to me with a look of wonder.
“Ah, sorry.”
With a single breath—whoosh—I blew out all sixteen flames.
“Congratulationsssssssss!”
Shiori clapped her hands, frolicking happily. The moment I saw her like that, I realized something.
Wait. Am I… in love with my sister? No, am I starting to fall for her?
I’ve never disliked her; I’ve always loved her. But… that was strictly as family.
I love my mother, I like my father well enough—the feeling isn’t much different from the affection one would hold for a brother or sister, even if I don’t have other siblings.
I felt the same way toward my sister.
Even after she confessed and we started dating, those feelings hadn’t changed.
Or rather, they hadn’t changed until now.
But the way I feel about her in this moment—it isn’t a maddening passion yet, but there is a tiny flicker of something new in my heart.
I’ve never dated anyone, and I’ve never confessed to anyone before.
However, I have liked people. I’ve even written love letters I never had the courage to send.
And I just realized that something distinctly different from “family” is budding inside me right now……
“Here, Onii-chan.”
She carefully removed the candles, sliced the cake, and handed a piece to me.
“It’s so goooood!”
Shiori stuffed her cheeks with cake.
I ate mine too, but right now, I couldn’t taste a thing.
I have no memory of our conversation after that. I only came back to my senses once I’d returned to my room and sat down on my bed.
I remembered the letter Shiori gave me in my pocket and began to read it.
【To my beloved Onii-chan,
Happy Birthday. Starting today, you’re another year older, truly becoming a “big brother” again.
I used to always wish that you weren’t my brother.
I’ve resented Mom, Dad, you, God, and even myself.
I wondered why I had to be your little sister……
But then you said you’d go out with me, and you answered my feelings.
I was so happy. My dream really came true. Now, I’m grateful to everyone.
Thank you for being my big brother, and for appearing before me as my Onii-chan.
And once again, Happy Birthday, Onii-chan.
Onii-chan, I love you forever and ever. —Shiori】
I didn’t even change out of my uniform. I just sat on my bed and stared at that letter for hours.
