Chapter 13: The Uniform Date
“Happy Birthday, Onii-chan.”
That’s right. Today was my birthday.
Because we’re in the same class, I didn’t have to do the annual “Are you twins?” explanation, so I had completely forgotten about it.
All of her pushiness today—it was all for me.
My sister’s smiling face was framed by the Odaiba nightscape; it was as if her face were sparkling……
Ah, this is bad. This is really bad. I can’t look at her face properly.
“Here, Onii-chan. Your birthday present.”
From her bag, Shiori pulled out a box slightly larger than the palm of a hand. It was beautifully wrapped, adorned with a ribbon and an accompanying letter.
“Sorry… that you did all this for me. Thank you.”
I apologized to her out of guilt for thinking she was acting weird, and thanked her for doing so much for my sake.
“No, it’s for my sake. I thought if I did something special, in a special place, on a special day, it would stay in your memories. I want to remain in your memories, Onii-chan. If I can stay there, I’m happy. So, it’s all for myself.”
I looked at her profile as she stared straight ahead, and my eyes drifted toward the lips I’d become so conscious of during our first date.
This is bad. She’s beautiful. She’s cute. Wait, she’s my sister! But…… she’s my girlfriend.
Night in Odaiba. Alone in a Ferris wheel. I can’t think straight anymore.
“Shiori……”
The moment I placed my hand on her shoulder and called her name, her face turned crimson.
“H-h-hiiih?!”
While still facing forward, she let out a sound that was barely a scream.
“Huh?” I looked in the direction she was staring.
Through the window of the gondola ahead of us, I could see a couple kissing—no, they were doing something much more intense.
The gondola in front of us was one of the famous see-through ones.
You can see everything……
They weren’t naked, but they were groping each other. They were probably doing it to show off to a high school couple in uniforms like us.
“Hiiiiiiiiiiii!”
Past red and straight to pale, Shiori shrieked as she clung to me, burying her face in my chest.
“There, there. It’s okay. Not scary, not scary.”
I stroked the head of my sister—who I couldn’t tell was being precocious or just incredibly innocent—and thought, Yeah, we’re both still just kids. I looked away from the couple in front and focused on the night view outside.
By the time we reached the ground, the couple was already gone.
I took the hand of my trembling sister as she wobbled off the ride, and we sat on a park bench, our hands still linked.
Looking at the Ferris wheel against the backdrop of the Odaiba night, I was suddenly overcome by a sense of absurdity.
“Hahahaha!”
Shiori and I burst out laughing at the same time.
The fact that we laughed together made it even funnier, and we laughed even louder.
After laughing for a while, Shiori’s smile turned into tears.
“Waaaaah! That’s so meaaan!”
“Well, it’s definitely stuck in my memory now.”
Understanding why she was crying, I gave her a thumbs up and a wink as I answered.
“It’s awful! I don’t want a memory like that!”
“Well, this is a memory too. Whether they’re good or bad, they’re precious memories with you, Shiori.”
I squeezed her hand tight, and she squeezed back.
“I don’t want bad memories. I only want to have fun memories with you, Onii-chan.”
I didn’t think that was actually possible, but I didn’t deny it.
“Yeah. That would be nice.”
Holding her hand while looking at the night view, I truly hoped from the bottom of my heart that all of her memories could be happy ones.
“Oh, right. Can I open the present?”
“Yeah. But read the letter later, it’s embarrassing.”
I tucked the letter into my pocket, carefully peeled off the wrapping, and opened the box.
Inside was a book cover. It looked handmade.
“Did you make this?”
“Yeah. You read books a lot, Onii-chan, so I thought it would be good. I wanted to make something better, but it didn’t turn out quite right. I’m sorry it’s just something like this.”
“No, I’m happy. Thank you, Shiori. I’ll be glad to use it.”
I patted the head of the smiling Shiori and looked at the book cover.
It was made of cloth.
But this pattern…… I feel like I’ve seen it somewhere before. Like I’ve seen it every single day.
I had a bad feeling, but I asked anyway.
“Shiori, this fabric……”
“Yeah! It’s my middle school uniform!”
A book cover made from the fabric of the uniform that Shiori had worn for three years, soaked in her presence……
“I made it because I want you to feel me always, and for me to stay in your memory. Please use it forever, Onii-chan.”
“…………”
My sister’s love…… is incredibly heavy……
