My girlfriend's mother turned out to be my stalker - Chapter 5- The past
It was about four months ago.
29th April.
The day my mother left me seven years ago.
As usual, I bought her favorite flowers, and after school, I started walking toward the graveyard.
Sumire was in Kyoto, at her grandparents. It was summer vacation, after all.
At that time, she didn’t know that it was my mother’s death anniversary. She told me how much she wanted to be with me, but I assured her that I was fine.
But honestly? I really wasn’t.
My mother was the only person whom I could ever call my family member.
I was there when she took her last breath.
I still couldn’t forget those nights when I remained awake all the time. I knew the time was coming…that she was about to leave me, but somehow I hoped that one night she would get up all well.
Guess, that happens only in fantasy.
About my father…well, he already had another family, the one that was recognized by his family. So after Mom died, he completely forgot about me. Not like I cared. He was never there for me. He was…nothing but a reason why I exist. Nothing else.
He is the reason why I always valued loyalty in a relationship. Because that man was never loyal.
“Haa…this looks old as usual.” Reaching the graveyard, I heaved a sigh.
My mum was buried near the community she used to live in when she was a child.
The place was not regularly visited and there were only a few tombstones here.
I barely see anyone here when I come.
And today as well…it was supposed to be empty.
“Huh?!” My eyes widened as I saw it—a scene which could be regarded as criminal at first glance.
A man was currently assaulting a woman by pressing her against the wall.
She was clearly struggling and trying to push him away, but the man had his arm pushed against her throat, blocking her voice.
And they were in such a secluded spot that if I hadn’t been looking around, I wouldn’t have known at all.
My feet were moving before my mind could process what I should do.
And in a few seconds, “Hey, man.” I called him out, making the man flinch.
He sharply turned towards me before I grabbed his face and first separated him from the woman.
My hands are naturally big so his whole face was in my grasp.
“Shtop-fuck!” He tried punching me but it felt laughable. The man was hella short.
I grabbed his wrist before kicking his ankle and letting him fall on the ground with a loud thud.
…his head hit the pavement.
He groaned…he will survive.
My eyes turned towards the lady and I knew exactly that I wasn’t mistaken.
“Ayumi-san…” The same lady I meet in the morning every day was currently sobbing uncontrollably while kneeling on the ground.
Her ankle was bleeding pretty badly. The scum must have wounded her.
I hurriedly called the police and the ambulance and accompanied her to the hospital.
Later, it turned out, the man was actually a stalker. Ayumi-san went on a blind date with him once, and he proposed to her right away.
She, naturally, declined. But he didn’t take that well and continued to chase her—leading him to commit the crime.
Ayumi-san was injured and had lost quite a lot of blood so she needed to stay in the hospital for a few days.
Now that she didn’t have any relatives in town, I decided to stay with her.
And the next day, the first relative who came to see her was her daughter.
Sumire.
Such a small world.
….
“I was very foolish to go to that place…I thought in a calm surroundings, I would be able to think better.” Ayumi-san said with a sigh as she sat beside me.
I am glad to see that she comfortable talking about that incident. Maybe she had healed in these few months.
I told her, “I have heard how creative minds seek peace. But you should be careful about your security.”
She nodded, “I always carry pepper spray and my phone with me now.”
Ah, yes. I heard from Sumire that she didn’t even carry her phone in the past.
Since she seemed fairly well talking about that incident, I asked her, “How is your injury now?”
She suddenly lifted her leg to show me her ankle, but since she was wearing a skirt…unintentionally, my eyes went somewhere they shouldn’t have.
Guh, what am I doing?! I am not like this around other women unless it’s Sumire. Then why today? Because their face resemble each other so much?
“Kei-kun?” She called out and I hurriedly turned my head.
Like a cute hamster, she looked at me with her eyes droopy and her head slightly tilted.
Yup, they are very much similar.
Keeping my eyes straight this time, I checked her injury.
It has healed but there was still a faint scar.
“If only I had arrived a little earlier…” I subconsciously muttered.
Just then, she lowered her leg and scooted closer.
Holding my hand in hers, she said, “You saved my life back then, Kei-kun. I can never really relay how grateful I am. Not that only you saved but you stayed by my side all the time, ensuring that I am not left alone in that hospital.”
Her eyes turned red with tears. It appears she hadn’t completely recovered.
Just then, “I am back.”
Sumire’s voice rang.
I instinctively removed my hand from hers.
Wait…why did I do that?
Was it guilt towards Sumire that I looked at her mother in an inappropriate way that I got scare she might misunderstand?
I glanced at Ayumi-san and found her gaze downcast.
‘Shit…what am I doing?’
