Chapter 58: Graduation Ceremony
TL: lime
ED: Spynine01
“Ah… my shoulders are so stiff…”
Why is the principal’s speech so long? Do people really want to talk about their experiences so much to younger people as they get older?
The words of our predecessors always seem like they’re very valuable.
But if they don’t get the point across well, it’s just mindless noise in the end.
Graduation ceremony.
Today the curtain falls on the life of a high school freshman like me.
These days of closure are important, so I didn’t arrive late for once and listened to the teachers’ words of thanks in silence, but even after all these years, I still can’t get used to this.
The principal of this high school, in particular, seems to quite be a talker, repeating the same kind of talk like a loop which was going on for a long time, it’s like a tunnel with no end in sight.
“What is he talking about like an old man…?”
After the graduation ceremony in the gymnasium, as the students zig-zagged their way back to their classrooms, Touma gave me a sharp rebuke as I rolled my shoulders like an ace baseball pitcher.
“There are only a few days left where anyone can complain like this. Maybe next year I won’t even have the time to say that.”
“Next year huh… Then you’ll either be taking exams or go job hunting――wait, will you be able to move on to the next grade in the first place?”
“That’s a stupid question.”
He raises his glasses and says with a smug look on his face.
“High school has a remedial system!”
“Supplementary classes…”
I don’t think it’s something you should say with such pride, but apparently it’s okay to advance that way…?
“Wait, that’s right. There are no 3rd year students anymore.”
I look at the students who were going back to their respective classrooms, and suddenly mutter to myself quietly.
“They have already graduated. Only the first and second-year students are here now.”
“I’m kind of deeply moved. ――I didn’t know anyone in the third year.”
Touma also said, “Me too,” and his glasses fogged up with his words.
“But next year our seniors will be graduating…”
“Ah, I see… Natsuki-senpai and Isozu-senpai are…”
Those guys are in their third year starting in the new year, they’ll be graduating in between now and the next year, right?
“――That’s why.”
“What sort of reasoning is that?”
When I suddenly added a tsukkomi at Touma’s abrupt transition, he ignored me and continued talking.
“Do you have time today? I want you to come to the clubroom.”
“Today?”
“I finally finished it. I really wanted you and Nanasegawa-san to see it.”
“Ah! The informational video for new students.――Are you sure?”
“I’m the one who asked for it, of course.”
“I’ll go then.”
♢♢
Six people, four members of the Film Studies Club and two outsiders were attending the preview for the movie, held at the Film Studies Club.
It was a little lonely, but it was a movie preview held with the screen projector properly lowered.
The movie was neither a flashy action movie nor a thought-provoking mystery film.
It was just an informational video made by the students. There was no foreshadowing in it. It’s just a bunch of people reading out some lines out loud, and the camera is also blurry. You can’t deny the sense that the editing is very deceptive.
Still, why is it that…? Why am I still a little moved watching this?
I wonder if it’s due to the fact that I had a slight assistance in this video that makes me feel excited.
“――How was it?”
After watching the video, Natsuki-senpai looked not at the club members but at me and Shiori and asked us our opinions.
“Very good.”
Shiori’s response before I could say anything else was simple. But――.
“Thank you! Shiori-chan!”
With a gasp, Shijo takes Shiori’s hand with tears in her eyes.
“I’m really impressed. I thought it was going to be pretty messy, but thanks to Shiori’s editing, it took a good shape. Thank you so much.”
I heard that Shiori had been helping the film studies club more closely than I had.
I visited it a few times myself, but it was nothing compared to Shiori.
“W-Well…”
Shiori was bewildered by having her hand taken so suddenly, “Ah…” Shijo blurts out.
“I called you by your name.”
“It’s fine. Call me by my name.”
When Shiori said this with a bit of a bite, Shijo looked pleased and replied, “Then call me Sumire too.”
Shiori nodded and shyly said, “S-Sumire-chan…,” calling her name and smiling at each other.
It was a moment of a new friendship being kindled, and amidst the dusty atmosphere, Natsuki-senpai asked me next, “What about you, Kojiro? How was it?”.
“That was good. I think that, more than anything else, you’ve done a good job of showing the school, which was the original purpose of the video. I think this kind of thing is often far removed from the purpose, but I think this video gets the main point across right.”
“Do you think it’s safe to show this to our juniors?”
“I don’t think there’s much unanimity in the world. I’m sure there will inevitably be some critics, but… I think it’s pretty well done.”
“I-I see. Good.”
Natsuki-senpai patted her chest.
“――Fumu. Then, let’s make a movie next time.”
For some reason, Isozu-senpai made a fist and tried proposing a new project.
“The six of us?”
“Hey, Touma. Don’t include us in it.”
“My skills are improving.”
“Hey, you radish actor. What makes you think that you can do it? Even if you are in it, you’ll just be part of the backstage again.”
“Kojiro doesn’t get to decide that.”
“Certainly.”
“Isshiki-kun, if you join the film studies club, you can decide on that, you know.”
“There. Don’t try to recruit me like that.”
“I’ve got your club registration form ready.”
“Natsuki-senpai. Where did you get that from?”
I stood up and said, “There’s a lot of stupid people out here! This club…!” I made a tsukkomi.
“What is it, Kojiro? You think you’re a lucky guy, don’t you?”
“I’m thinking of the standard thing for this situation..”
“Wow… There are people like that in this world..”
“Shijo… Don’t be a turn-off. It makes me want to cry.”
“It’s the lack of protein that makes you want to cry. That’s why you need protein.”
“The only reason I want to cry is because I keep getting made fun of! It has nothing to do with protein!”
“Kojiro is annoying.”
“Stop the simple insults!”
“I’ve got your club registration form ready, okay?”
“Wow. He’s a one-pattern man…”
Natsuki-senpai clapped her hands after a bit of pain and said, “W-Well!” and was able to get back on track.
“We’ll decide this situation next time in the next year――Kojiro, Shiori. Thank you for your help.”
After Natsuki-senpai bowed her head saying so, all the club members bowed their heads to us.
Shiori and I just smiled shyly in response.
A/N:
Due to the number of chapters, I wanted to make a good break, so I cut off the story in the middle.
I’ll be posting more short chapters after this one, so please bear with me!
Heyo your friendly ED here. Usually I wouldn’t post anything after the chapter but the TL has something to say. The Translators PC these days has been having some issues, its gotten really slow and also really bad for translating right now, that’s why these chapters now took nearly an entire month to release. He’s still trying to translate with it but its gotten really hard, which is why he’s opening up a ko-fi to try and get donations for a new PC. Click here for the ko-fi link. This is not something you HAVE to donate to, but just something he’s trying to get for a new PC. That’s all, thank you for your support!
