My Adorable Daughter Can't Be A Villainess - Chapter 24 - Academy Visit
[Next morning]
At the breakfast table, Charlotte and Chloe had already arrived like usual.
Yesterday, many things happened.
However, what left the deepest impact on Chloe was Eric’s confession.
She… had barely caught any sleep. Her mind kept replaying the words she had heard from the man yesterday.
Deep down, she had already known his reason for suddenly disappearing from her life. But getting the confirmation from the man himself… it suddenly felt like she had been betrayed all over again.
Regardless, she didn’t tell Charlotte anything about it.
If Eric had chosen to keep his relationship with her a secret, Chloe would not ruin anything out of spite.
However, Chloe felt that once the child learned everything, she might decide not to stay here.
Chloe didn’t know how she would react when that happened.
Eric had fought his mother for Charlotte and Chloe yesterday, and she had even heard him talking about annulling his engagement to the girl his mother had selected for him.
Naturally, Chloe wasn’t going to stay here with him… but if Charlotte also left him… would Eric ever move on from guilt?
‘Why am I getting worried about him? His life is all about his research and expanding his fame.’ Snickering, Chloe decided to push those thoughts aside.
However, no matter how much she tried, she ended up thinking about him in the end.
“Ah, Uncle Eric. Good morning,” Charlotte’s eager voice broke her reverie, and Chloe looked up to find Eric approaching them.
While his clothes were new and his appearance neat… his eyes looked red—a clear sign of a lack of sleep.
Chloe wouldn’t deny that she knew the reason, but she chose not to say anything about it.
Charlotte, though, couldn’t let it pass. “Uncle Eric? Your eyes… did you not sleep last night?”
Eric smiled fondly at her concern. Taking his seat, he assured her, “It’s just a mild irritation. Don’t worry, I am fine.”
Charlotte still looked worried, but before she could say anything, Chloe tapped her knees and gestured for her to start eating.
Maylie stood to the side, watching everything unfold. Somehow, she was the only one who understood what was going through everyone’s mind. But naturally, she chose to remain silent.
The family of three began to eat when Eric asked, “Maylie, when is the Commander arriving?”
He had requested a meeting with the northern commander regarding security concerns. The man was supposed to report today.
“In the evening, Young Master. Today, you have an academy visit.”
Charlotte’s eyes glimmered at the words as she instantly asked, “Uncle Eric, you’re going to the academy?!” Her excitement rang clearly in her voice.
Eric hummed, “Yes. I am.” Lifting his eyes to meet hers, he asked, “Want to tag along?”
“Yes—” Charlotte instantly responded, only for her mother to interject,
“Char. Not everything is about fun and games. He is going there to work.”
Charlotte’s shoulders dropped as she leaned back and lowered her gaze.
The sight before him was so endearing that it completely washed away all his drowsiness.
In a calm voice, Eric murmured, “It’s okay, Charlotte can come.” Taking a pause and tactically avoiding Chloe’s cold glare, he added, “Today is campus visit day. Those who aspire to join the academy are the ones who are visiting.”
Glancing at Charlotte, he added, “And I believe Charlotte is among those as well, isn’t she?”
The younger silver-headed hair nodded twice, a happy smile never leaving her face.
Chloe heaved a sigh. “Well, since you two have already made the decision, what else should I say?”
Charlotte instantly held her hand and asked, “Mom, come too!”
Chloe narrowed her eyes. “No, I am not going there. And it’s final.” Her tone was firm, leaving no room for argument.
Eric didn’t say anything this time, since he knew what could be the possible reason for her reluctance to see the place that had once been her life.
And the cause of that was, naturally, Eric.
….
After breakfast, Charlotte immediately went to freshen up and change her clothes.
Chloe followed her, intending to rest until the afternoon.
Eric had told Maylie to take care of her while they were away.
It went without saying that he had fortified the defenses after the last ambush, recruiting and assessing every soldier himself.
Now, Eric was in his study, currently going through his research papers.
Before his transmigration, what the original Eric Blackwood had been working on was Spell Dismantling.
The magic system worked in three phases: the first stage was intent, the second was spell structuring done by the Arcane, and the third was mana supply from the brain.
One couldn’t affect the inner workings of the mana producer or the intent of someone unless they had emotional control over the other party.
So, what was left? The Arcane.
And that’s where Spell Dismantling came into play.
He had been trying to discern how to achieve something that could leave any sorcerer helpless for the past three years, but he hadn’t come to a solution.
Well, in the world’s eyes. In reality, Eric had already found a way. It was scratchy and full of holes, but it was the most believable method.
Still, the current him wasn’t all that interested in focusing on the research, because he had several other things to handle.
The only reason he went through the whole research file was to prepare for any questions he might face at the academy.
“Haah, well, I hope they don’t end up suspecting anything.” Sighing, he packed his bag and got up. He wasn’t planning to work today, but the bag was for precaution.
Not long after, he left the office and found a pretty girl standing there.
She wore a black dress that reached her knees, and her hair was braided with several floral clips adorning her silver strands.
Eric smiled fondly as he approached her and said, “You look lovely.”
Charlotte giggled happily. “Mom braided my hair.”
“It looks very pretty.” Standing beside her, Eric asked, “So? Are you excited to see where your mother and I met?”
She was practically vibrating with joy as she said, “Yes!”
