The return of Ainsworth (beginning part)
☆
Shortly after Anna peeled the blankets off of me.
Upon her signal, a number of maids surged into my room.
”Eh? Wai-, what?!”
The maids each hold things like cosmetics cases and my clothes and such, and begin spreading them around the room evenly.
”Till Ojou-sama woke up, everyone’s been waiting in the corridor! Come, let’s take a bath first.”
Saying so, Anna rolled up her sleeves and dragged me to the bathroom.
”Eh-, wai-, that-…”
While Anna uses magic to fill the bathtub, the maids began stripping me of my pyjamas.
What can be done with magic, is done with magic.
The finer details are left to human wave tactics.
That went on for two hours.
I abundantly savoured the feeling of clothes that had been tossed into drum type washing and drying machines.
☆
——— three hours later.
”Ah, it’s Leticia-samaaa!!”
”Ooh, the young lady came out!”
(“”Ooooohh!!””)
From all around the mansion, shouts of joy rose from the large crowds of people.
”?!”
As I left the mansion to board the carriage, I stared in wonder at such a scene.
”Uhh, what’s going on???”
Hugh-nii-sama, who was in front of me as I stood there, perplexed, looked over his shoulder and snickered.
”Everyone came to see the image of Letty.”
”Me?”
Recently, the people who waved their hands whenever I go out in the carriage and they notice the Owleyes Countship’s crest have certainly increased.
”But why would so many people go out of their way just to see me…”
When I said so, my brother shrugged his shoulders as if to say 『this is no good』.
”It’s about time Letty realises just how popular she is.”
”Yep. Well, if they knew of this adorableness, that much would be natural.”
Yep, yep, nodded my father.
Wai-, stop…
”Otou-sama. Please don’t say that in public, okay? You’re partly to blame for all of this, aren’t you, Otou-sama?!”
Because while I’d been deeply asleep, he’d of his own accord had a portrait drawn of me, and blurted out strange stuff in a newspaper interview. (I’m mad)
I puffed out my cheeks.
”Y-, yeah. I got it. I won’t say it 『outside』.”
Otou-sama made for himself an escape route.
I pressed closer to my father.
”Stop doing it even in our house. Otou-sama’s voice is loud, so I’m always embarrassed.”
”Ghu… l-, let’s deal with it according to the situation.”
What is it with this doting idiot of a Count…
While I was holding my head in my hands———
”Leticia-samaaaa!”
”Congrats, on your peeraaaaage!!”
”Oh no, she’s even cuter than her picture in the newspaper!! Look this waaaaaay!!!”
I could hear the cheers of the people crowding behind the fence.
”Uhm…”
I was perplexed.
Then Hugh-nii-sama pushed me in front of him, and plop[1], placed his hand on my shoulder.
”Why not give them a wave?”
I couldn’t just ignore them, as Onii-sama said, so I faced the crowd and gave a small wave in front of my chest.
And then,
(“”Waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!!””)
Somehow, I got more cheers than I expected.
”A-, about time we got going!!”
Having become embarrassed, I boarded the carriage as if escaping.
——— however.
In truth, I’d still been underestimating them.
What am I talking about, you say?
Of course, I’m talking about just how much attention my peerage conferment was getting from the public.
☆
Leaving the gate, the carriage headed for the castle.
Although the people had crowded the area around the mansion, once we’d begun riding, it was the usual road, the usual sight.
But———
”Hm?”
As we approached the royal castle, the number of people walking along the road seemed to increase…
And,
”Hmmm??”
As I was glancing out the carriage window, for a moment, I felt like I saw something absurd, so I jumped at the window.
”What happened?”
Hanging out the window, my brother asked me that question.
”It’s just, everyone seems to be holding tiny flags, but…”
When I replied so, my gaze outside the window shifted.
And then, I saw it.
The flag.
『That』 which was drawn on the flag.
”H-, hey! Why is a flag with that design going around!!??”
That was two bears.
No, teddy bears.
Coco was an olive-brown boy.
Mel was a golden-brown girl.
The present I’d gotten for my fifth birthday from Okaa-sama[2], my dear, dear friends.
In Coco’s hand, a magic rifle.
In Mel’s hand, a shining shield.
Between the two, ivy was drawn twined around the magic implement and drawing board.
The design drawn on the flag was, undoubtedly, the 『Ainsworth Baroness House』’s crest which I had designed.
As the original baron’s crest had been taken over by the Owleyes Count House, I needed to register a new crest for my use.
”Come to think of it, the newspaper published Letty’s crest a little while ago.”
Brother Hugh clapped his hands, as if remembering.
”Eeeh? Why would it be placed in the newspaper???”
”Well, it’s the birth of the first female head of a family, since the founding of the country. Even if it wasn’t, Letty’s article is quite popular.”
”No, that’s not what I mean. I was wondering why is that design public…”
Sure, I did submit a design for when I get my peerage conferred, but I don’t recall giving the newspaper agency one.
In the first place, the only one I drew was submitted to the country.
When I tilted my head, I heard my father mention something.
”Ah, if they apply to the country, anyone can reference the family crests of aristocratic Houses.”
”Oh, was that so?”
”Yeah. THe proof of that is that, while the one in the newspaper is in black and white, that flag is probably coloured.”
””That’s true!””
Hugh-nii-sama and I yelled out at the same time.
”Huh? But…”
Hubert-nii-sama looked out the carriage window a second time.
”That flag, no matter how you look at it, there’s no way it’s been handmade privately.”
”Huh?”
I looked out in a hurry as well.
Certainly, the size and the crest proportions on those flags are all the same.
It was clearly 『mass produced』 by some trader.
”Seriously! They’re selling a design I designed as a flag without permission!!”
”The crests of nobility certainly are quite public, but… it’s not permitted to commercialise and sell without permission. Who in the world would do such a thing…”
And so, it happened when my brother and I were looking at the people holding the flags.
”O-, over there!!”
Nii-sama pointed out the window.
I followed it with my eyes.
And then———
””Aaaaaahh!!””
The two of us unintentionally yelled out.
There was a tiny stall there.
In front of that shop was a long line of people, and people, and people.
And at the front of that line of people, they were buying flags with smiles on their faces.
Standing at the stall, the three people handling the sale of flags were———
”Jack! Roland-san!! And even Aunty[3]?!”
The salespeople were three people I knew rather well.
If you look closely, you could see Yankee-kun organising the line, and the workshop chief Duncan and Uncles watching over them closely.
The entire Royal Capital Workshop appeared.
”Everyone, what on earth are you doooiing?!”
I unconsciously yelled out.
Next to me, my brother let out a sigh.
”But well, now you know who’s guilty.”
Gigigi… my brother and I turned our heads around.
”Chichi-ue?” “Otou-sama?”
”Wh-, what is it?”
My father averted his eyes.
””What exactly are doing without permission!!??””
Within the carriage, mine and my brother’s angry voices echoed over each other.
TL Notes:
[1]XD I’m sorry, but I didn’t know a better one ↩
[2]means mommy ↩
[3]can’t quite recall what I translated this as, but I’m confident I didn’t translate it as Aunty. I’m changing it to this because it makes perfect sense in English. Other names will likely change as well. ↩
Thanks to everyone who sent in novel suggestions, both here and on Discord. Because of that, I’ve faced the complete opposite problem I thought I’d end up with: I’ve now got too many options.
As such, I decided to limit it to completed novels with a certain maximum chapters, and have chosen one. Its name is “With a magic stone implanted in my chest, who should I take revenge on?”.
One reason I decided on this one is that, I noticed I definitely talk too much during these translations. This particular novel capitalises on its mystery, and so, that naturally means I can’t discuss these things. See it as practice for me.
Another reason is that this novel has a particular narrative style that I’ve always wanted to try.
I also want a constant upload schedule for this one, so I’ll only start uploading it once we’ve reached the end of this arc, as previously mentioned.
Please look forward to it.
