Leticia’s passion, and the course of events
☆
——— 『Leticia, who are you?』
I was bewildered by His Majesty’s question.
Because, his question’s intention was unclear.
Seeing me tilt my head with a troubled expression, His Majesty hit his hand against his forehead as though saying 『now I’ve done it』.
“Sorry, Lady Leticia. I was surprised at how advanced, and detailed, the young lady’s arguments were. Forgive me, I didn’t intend to frighten you.”
Saying so, His Majesty lowered his head.
I nodded slightly.
“I’m fine, so please raise your head, Your Highness.”
At my words, His Majesty lifted his head.
“———the idea of having the three powers of government mutually monitor each other, I merely said that in reply to Your Majesty’s question. My wish was only something like 『I’d like to have the constitutional government advance forward in a practical manner, that takes into account the kingdom’s history and full circumstances.”
When I supplemented what I’d said, His Majesty smiled, and nodded.
“I see, I understand now. From hereon, while continuing even more so as a constitutional government, I shall promise to scrutinise the system to hamper the concentration of political power and misappropriation.”
“Thank you for your concern, Your Highness.”
I bowed my head while still seated.
And then, when I had thought 『this conversation is likely over with this』.
His Majesty sleekly brought up this topic.
“Incidentally, Lady Leticia. The truth is, your father brought up a discussion of 『having his daughter succeed the baronship』 the other day, have you heard about that?”
“!”
With the subject popping up suddenly, I was taken aback.
“Ehm… that would be the Ainsworth baronship, right. The wartime-peerage one.”[1]
“Umu, it’s about that baronship, but ——— by the looks of things, it’s been discussed within the Family beforehand, huh.”
“Yes. I originally proposed to my father that I succeed the title, and of course got his approval.”
No way, I didn’t think that topic would come up with this timing though.[2]
I commented so within my head.
“That’s right. Then, why do you suppose the young lady would like to take over the peerage, hmm? Though there are those usual young ladies who wish to marry into a family, I think they don’t think of things like 『wanting to succeed a peerage themselves』.”
“Huh? Ehm———”
My brain ran at full speed.
The number one reason was of course, 『because I don’t want to marry that idiot prince』.
But, as expected, I can’t afford to blurt such a thing out.
Then, when it comes to a me-like reason…
“———that is, because I thought I wanted to restore the 『Ainsworth』 name.”
“Restore the Family?”
Tilting his head, His Majesty gazed into my eyes.
I nodded, looking back into those eyes.
“Yes. As you’re aware, the Ainsworths are a Family that have contributed to the founding of this nation with the development of magic tools, and given a peerage as a result. Yet recently, new development has stagnated while competing workshops have been snatching away work.”
Glancing next to me, Otou-sama shrugged his shoulders with an awkward wry smile.
I turned to look at His Majesty again.
“Thereupon, I like magic tools the most in the present Ainsworth, I love making magic tools, I would neglect and forget food and sleep as I keep drawing blueprints, to the point that before I know it, it’s already the morning o the next day, that is 『me』 who really, really, really loves making magic tools, so I’ll succeed the Ainsworth baronship, and put the Family back together again, is what I was thinking!”[3]
Gripping my fists, I strongly argued my point.
“I-, is that so, hm?”
It felt like His Majesty was pulling back.
However, my tension knew nothing of stopping.
“Yes, that’s right! Otou-sama and my eldest brother Graham-nii-sama shall likely walk the honourable path of an Owleyes. But the one who shall take back the magic-toolmaking glory of the Ainsworth name, who is loved by Mistreel, shall be none other than me, Leticia Ainsworth!!”
Banging the table with both hands, I leaned forward while shouting so.
His Majesty recoiled in shock.
Otou-sama put a hand to his face, while stifling a laugh.
“Th-, that’s right. I understand it clearly, Lady Leticia. Then, young lady, we shall consider an environment in which you can immerse yourself in making magic tools.”
“?———yes. Thank you???”
Though I couldn’t really understand the words of His Majesty, who’s smile kept twitching, for the meantime, I said my thanks.
And like that, the talks with the king finished.
☆
The next two months.
Various things happened.
The trial for those who assisted in the dragon assault.
Theirs and Duke Oswell’s punishment.
The queen’s dethronement and seclusion.
Though it was a major incident that shook this country, without me having to do anything thereafter, things quietly got cleaned up.
With the help of the Second Knights Order, the prosecution, and then many other people, the full story of the matter on the whole got revealed, in terms of things within the country.
The plan for the assault this time had been going on for a year now, spearheaded by the Duke.
Those who got the death penalty were the other collaborators, most of those who provided transit points for the dragons, and the Duke and just a few other subordinates who exchanged information with the Principality.
The rest were the 『people who knew of the plan, but weren’t given an assignment』, who were many, and most of them settled for the judgement of an expulsion from office and relinquishing their peerage.
One regret was probably that we couldn’t get much information from the Principality’s side.
Also, nothing more was known about the source of that magic transmitter and communications device, other than 『it was provided by the Principality』.
In any case, I’d say the domestic issues have been mostly settled.
And of course, one more trial too.
One month after the talks with His Majesty.
It was announced that the Second Prince, Alvin Sanaak Heielland, had been stripped of his right to succeed the throne and had been removed from the royal registry.
The trial for his attempted murder against me concluded.
The verdict, guilty.
He became a commoner, and was put to heavy labour for ten years in a magic stone mine in the northern region.
The remnants of the Royalist Faction nobles raised voices of dissent, but through the efforts of His Majesty, the matter was dealt with in proper form, and he was tried according to the laws of the kingdom.
And naturally, as the victim, I attended the trial.
Except, though he sat haggardly in the defendant’s seat like a cripple, and I already felt nothing for him.
No anger.
No pity.
Simply, what I felt the moment when leaving the courthouse where the judgement had been handed down, was just a sort of 『weight off my shoulders』 kind of sensation, which left a lasting impression.
☆
At that moment, while I’d been taking a cosy nap.
“———-sama”
While in a dazed consciousness.
I felt like I’d heard someone’s voice.
But, I still wanted to sleep———
“———-sama, if you don’t wake up soon you won’t make it in time.”
A familiar voice tried to get me to wake up with an unusually strong tone.
“After ten minut…… Guu…”
“Ojou-sama-. Don’t 『Guu』 me!”
Shake shake, shake shake
“No-o-oo-, s-lee-pi-ng–…”
With Anna finally resorting to force, I put up a final resistance.
However———
“Hmph!!”
Whoosh!!
The warm blanket[4] was removed.
“Wha-, Anna, it’s cooold.”
Protesting after having finally opened my eyes, the figure of my attendant standing imposingly was right before my eyes.
“Ojou-sama, have you forgotten what day it is today?!”
“? Ehm… What day is it???”
“It’s Ojou-sama’s 『Peerage Conferment Day』! Are you going to have His Majesty confer your peerage with your ruffled hair and sleepwear?!”
“Ah…”
That instant, I snapped wide awake.
TL Notes:
[1]lol, she completely lost her formal tone here. ↩
[2]…my sweet, naive girl, if not now, then when? If even this wasn’t enough, then I’m sorry to say your chances are slim. ↩
[3]This monologue deserved far more exclamation marks. It’s strange, because the author never shied away from excessive punctuation before. ↩
[4]author used futon, but via context, this should specifically be a blanket. ↩
Alright, I’ve got a bunch of announcements, and I hope you’ll listen. They’re kinda important.
First up, this arc ends on the 55th chapter! We’ll be ending off the arc on a good note, so stick around for the remaining chapters of peerage conferment.
Secondly, I’ve gotten expandable text to work!… though that’s not really important. Just click it to read the contents.
Third, which is a bit disappointing…
And that brings us to Number 4, all thanks to Number 3…
I am currently looking into another novel to translate in parallel.
And no, I will NOT BE DROPPING this novel. We’ve started this journey quite soon after the novel started, and we’re nearly caught up to the current release (69 at the time of writing). Unless the author goes on a hiatus and never comes back, we shall persevere.
I will drop a comment down below, asking for novel suggestions. Both dropped novels and fresh novels are welcome, though I prefer the latter. I’ve got other preferences as well, but I’ll take the time to list it there.
What I’d like of you all to do is, reply to that very first comment with your suggestion, and a link to the NU page or raws. If you can, put in some sort of a motivation or summary or whatever after everything else.
And if you see someone else post a novel recommendation that you too approve of, click the like button on that reply. If you’ve got anything further to say, good or bad, regarding a particular recommendation, reply to that reply.
I might release a Google Form with a list I’m considering. You’ll find the link each time I post a new chapter.
You can also send your recommendations to me on Discord, just PM me or ping me in the server next to your recommendation.
I’ll be open to suggestions until this arc ends. Please don’t be disappointed if I don’t pick up your novel, even if it’s the most-liked. These are merely suggestions for me to consider. Furthermore, I’ll probably also reduce my releases while I search other novels, which means more time to decide.
Thanks for getting all this way
