[Wavelengths of magic power]
Like many things in nature, such as light and sound, magic power also has wave-like properties.
Locking and unlocking magic locks.
Stretching, cutting and welding of Mistreel wires.[1]
The workings and processing methods that utilise that property are understood to a degree, with [magic power emmission’s output and wavelength control] being considered a foundational skill of magic-toolmakers.
Back when I began studying making magic tools in my childhood[2], I’d repeatedly practise applying a magic soldering iron to Mistreel wires, changing the output and wavelength while imagining the shape to form.
Now then, this magic power wavelength.
Those that deal with magic and magic tools know this as a sensation, but it has actually been rarely studied academically.
The reason is simple.
It’s because there were no proper measuring instruments.
At most, they’d be something like a needle which changes speed in accordance with the peaks and valleys of the wavelength.
There were no measuring instruments capable of displaying the speed of oscillation numerically, at least not within our country.
Although, it could be said that it wasn’t developed because there was little need for it.
The peaks and valleys and such of the wavelengths used in making magic tools are well-known, and it was much more important for a magic-toolmaker to be able to control the wavelengths in minute detail, rather than to quantify them.
Let’s return to the topic at hand.
What I first thought when examining this magic tool, was exactly what Graham-nii asked me a moment ago.
It should have consumed the appropriate amount of magic power, and my brother and I, and even my father, all have a strong ability to sense magic power, yet we couldn’t perceive that magic power.
Why? was what I thought.
If I had thought about it without any information, I would have never have arrived at the correct answer, but fortunately, there was a hint.
——— it was rather trivial.
All I had to do was disassemble the box in front of me and examine it.
☆
”When I disassembled this box and examined it, I found two mechanisms. The first, was a mechanism for releasing magic power. The other, was a mechanism for converting magic power to a specific wavelength. ——— officers, I’m sorry, but would you mind spreading out and holding this for me?”
I pointed to a diagram among the items laid out on the desk as evidence.
The officers came, and held up the diagram.
At the same time, similar diagrams were held up in the jury box[3], as well as the visitor’s gallery.
Drawn there was an isometric diagram of the magic tool in question… a diagram with the object drawn at a slant.
The drawing is partially transparent so that the internal structure can be seen, so that people who are not familiar with magic tools can see it.
I took a telescopic pointer out from my bag, and continued my explanation.
”Arranged in this box, there are four parts. ① The switch, ② the magic stone slot, ③ the magic power emission sheet, and then this bundle of fur connecting ② and ③ is ④ the wavelength converter. ——— From ④, the remains of monster-specific magic power can be felt, which I think is most likely an organ from a [numb bat] or some other monster.”
I look around the assembly hall.
I see everyone, staring intently at the diagram.
There are some people pointing while explaining to whoever’s next to them, so uhh, the explanation seems to have been fine up till now.
”As is well known, the [numb bat] is a monster that inhabits caves and other dark places, using something that humans and other monsters can’t detect to sense their prey, and prey upon them by numbing them with paralysis magic. I thought that this [method of detecting prey] was a magic power wavelength which we couldn’t sense, and that such a mechanism in the magic tool may have been transplanted from there.”
(“Ooooh…!!”)
The assembly hall stirred loudly.
Bats use a waveband that’s inaudible to people… the fact that they use ultrasonic waves to grasp their environment is something that’s well-known across the Earth.
My explanation is an analogy from that, but I’m sure it’s not too far off.
”When we directly connected the magic stone to the magic power emission sheet as a test, it emitted magic power strong enough that even we could feel it. Therefore, I think it is undeniable that this [bundle of fur] is a component for converting magic power to a wavelength that cannot be sensed by humans.”
When I explained that,
”Objection!!!!”
A pig’s cry came flying from beside me.
The owner of the voice was the lawyer with the small moustache.
”Seriously, I can’t bear listening to this any longer! If the prosecution is the prosecution, then that witness is also a witness[4]. All the technical opinions the prosecution’s witness has expressed so far have been nothing more than their hypotheses! Prattling on about your delusions in the hallowed courtroom, trying to deceive those who listen, and such, is an unforgivable outrage[5]!! Judge, the defence asks that that swindling girl be held in contempt of court———”
Bang!!
”-!?”
A popping sound echoed about the assembly hall.
The lawyer and the Duke of Oswell looked at me with a startled face, who had clapped both hands together, and addressed them with a composed smile.
”Then in that case, let’s all try listening to the [invisible magic power] emitted by this magic tool as [sound].”
Following my words, the assembly hall shook with bellows and cheers.[6]
TL Notes:
[1]I seem to have missed an option for translation, but found it now. “Lines” have been switched with “wires” since it makes far more sense. ↩
[2]she’s still pretty much a child XD ↩
[3]best translation I could find. The Japanese word seemed to hint at all the officials, including the judge, being seated in the same area, while “jury box” only refers to where the jury sit. ↩
[4]No, I also don’t get what he’s trying to say here. Yes, that is exactly what it translates as, and I can’t seem to find any alternatives. ↩
[5]…nvm, I think he’s actually just spewing words to say something. Perhaps the author intentionally made it not make complete sense ↩
[6]The audience is a little too excitable, and it bothers me. But what do you expect, it’s the MC that they’re cheering for ↩
I realised I made a mistake in chapter 33’s title. These past 3 chapters (this one included), along with the ones to come, are meant as a set. They were meant to have the same starting title, but I mistranslated it the first time. It’s been fixed now.
