The first substantiation — 『Counter-offensive starting shot』
The presiding judge banged his gavel.
”Silence! ——— testimony by the prosecution’s witness allowed. The witness may enter the court.”
Graham-nii-sama gave a bow and walked up to the visitor’s gallery, where a court official standing at the divider opened the gate.
”Relying on ya’, Letty.”
”Please leave it to me. Onii-sama.”
Smiling as I took Nii-sama’s offered hand, I climbed down the steps in the assembly hall… alighting upon the courtroom.
The assembly hall was enveloped in an uproar once again.
(“That’s the rumoured [Silver-haired Angel], huh.”)
(“You’re saying something like a comment that family-favouring Owleyes Duke said, but… I see. [The sweetness gushing forth from wisdom], as he aptly said.”)
…hey.
The person in question can hear you, you know?
I was so embarrassed, I hid my face with my one hand.
”Letty!”
Turning around to the familiar voice that called from behind me, I saw Hubert-nii-sama waving his hand.
Next to him, father shouted out.
”Letty, just do you.”
To these words, a smile naturally floated to my face as I nodded.
☆
I exchanged a few words with Graham-nii-sama, and stood at the witness box.
The judge’s voice called out to me.
”Witness, please state your name and occupation.”
”I am the Owleyes Dukedom’s eldest daughter, the special-grade magic-toolmaker Leticia Ainsworth.”
I smiled, then greeted with a curtsey.
Aiming for sweet gestures, and a bit of charm.
The sound of gasps could be heard here and there in the venue.
——— From here on, it’s my time.
Graham-nii began the explanation.
”Earlier, the advocate expressed doubt for the evidence presented by the prosecution. He regards the cubic magic tool which we claim to be that which [sent a signal to the dragons] as [fraudulent evidence].”
A tingling tension ran through the assembly hall.
”So the prosecution would like to prove that this magic tool is, as we claim, [something that emits waves of magic power] and is [capable of sending signals to distant places]. ——— Witness, please give your testimony.”
When my brother passed the conversation to me, I bowed my head and opened my mouth.
”It was about a month ago. While I was recovering after having been involved in this time’s incident, I was visited by people from the Judicial Ministry and the Second Knights Order, who asked to consult with me.”
Saying so, I pointed to the square box in question, placed upon the desk beside me.
”That is, they wanted me to examine the function of that magic tool, was what the consultation was about.”
Giving a fleeting glimpse at the advocate, I saw him glaring this way with a terrific expression.
Incidentally, the Duke of Oswell behind him was an ornament as usual.
I wonder.
These two are already rather comical.
I showed those two a smile.
”I listened to the details of how that box was procured, and first tried pushing the button. According to the investigators, nothing happened despite pressing the button, is what they said.”
”What was the result of pressing the button?”
Graham-nii tries fishing for information from me.
”Actually, nothing happened.”
”Nothing happened?”
”Yes. I learnt this later after opening the box, but the magic power of the magic stone inside was dried up.”
”I see. Supposing that the button was pressed during the process of the investigation, you’d know the button would have been pressed multiple times. ——— by any chance, does this magic tool consume a lot of magic power?”
”That’s right. This is something we understood in a later investigation, but if you inserted a medium-sized magic stone, which was similar in size to the magic stone that was initially included in the box, if you kept pressing the button, it would run out of magic power in about 30 seconds.”
Receiving the box in question from my brother, I opened the box, and held it up high to show the surroundings the magic stone slots inside.
”As you can see, the magic stone slot used is one that can fit a medium-sized magic stone… However, within our country, as well as the surrounding countries, there’s no standard of medium-sized magic stones that match this slot exactly.”
”Oh, that’s curious, huh. But for now, let’s hear about the high magic power consumption. ——— I too consider myself barely a magic-toolmaker, so when you say [the magic power consumption is high], do you mean to say that this magic tool is using that energy for something?”
As the conversation was about to be derailed because of me, Graham-nii skillfully guides it back on track.
”That’s right. That’s exactly what I think.”
”Supposing that that much magic power was radiated in a short time, you’d think that those who are highly sensitive to magic power would have sensed it, yet this time there was nearly no one that noticed this magic tool’s emission of magic power. Why do you think that is?”
Right.
That’s the main point of this topic.
I look around at the surroundings, then spoke.
”Actually, there are bands of wavelengths that are hard for humans to perceive.”
In response to the contents of my statement which defied conventional wisdom of this country’s magic research, the assembly hall began to murmur loudly.
