Chapter 17: The Banished Marquis’ Daughter Becomes an Adventurer, Part 3
The house was already furnished and had bedding, so all we needed to do was bring in our belongings.
The cleaning was also taken care of, leaving us with nothing to do.
The only difficulty was that at night, I couldn’t sleep easily as I kept thinking about the feel of Erika’s hand.
Even though we assigned rooms randomly, I was a bit scared when I found a letter from the chancellor on my bed.
*
Early the next morning, Erika and I saw off Merseja, who was returning to Faltar.
“We’ll investigate the attackers here too, but you two should be careful.”
Merseja looked like he wanted to say something to Erika but just shook his head.
“Well, as long as you’re not careless, you’ll be fine, I think.”
I had an idea of what he wanted to say.
“Thanks for everything, Merseja. I’m sure we’ll need your help again, and I hope you have a safe trip.”
“Please give my regards to my father and tell him I’m doing well.”
Considering the letter, I doubted mere words would ease the chancellor’s worries.
“Yes, take care, my lady.”
Merseja bowed his head.
“Shall we get going as well?”
I said after watching the carriage leave.
“Yes, let’s go.”
“Where to?” Erika agreed without even asking.
We had discussed it yesterday, and today we were going to register as adventurers.
Becoming an adventurer is the easiest job in the world.
All you have to do is register with the Adventurers’ Guild.
Some countries have exams, but there are none in Faltar or Orcula.
It’s basically a system where you become one on your own, grow on your own, and if you’re not cut out for it, you die on your own.
This isn’t due to negligence by the Adventurers’ Guild.
It’s a regulation agreed upon with the country.
The Adventurers’ Guild is prohibited by this agreement from training adventurers in combat skills, including magic.
The most they can do is provide knowledge through books and such.
Therefore, new adventurers usually find a more experienced adventurer to learn from.
This is where they learn how to handle weapons and fight monsters.
Unlike academies, which offer thorough instruction in magic and weapon handling, this is primarily on-the-job training.
Personally, I preferred the Adventurers’ method, but that’s just me.
Academies also taught how to fight against humans, not just monsters.
The Adventurers’ Guild is located on the main street of the town, close to the barrier.
This is because their main business is buying monster materials and magic stones, which requires a warehouse for storage, so they need a fair amount of space.
In most towns, it’s a familiar place.
This scene is also quite familiar.
As I walked around the bustling area near the Adventurers’ Guild in the early morning, I remembered the Adventurers’ Guild in Faltar.
The restaurants and stalls catering to early-rising adventurers were crowded.
There weren’t this many people in Faltar, but the atmosphere was very similar.
I enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere, while Erika seemed fascinated by the new sights, watching the stalls and passing adventurers with interest.
I felt nostalgic until we entered the Adventurers’ Guild. The moment we stepped inside, I noticed the atmosphere was different.
I felt multiple gazes on us.
Actually, there were so many lines of magical energy directed at us that it was ridiculous to count them.
It’s understandable that people would look at Erika; she’s beautiful. If she didn’t attract attention, it would mean everyone around us was blind.
But why were they looking at me too?
It felt like we were being evaluated.
In the Faltar Adventurers’ Guild, no matter who walked in, it never felt like this.
Even when I, looking like a noble, entered, I was noticed but quickly lost their interest. I guess it varies from place to place.
I deliberately ignored the stares, and Erika, though she surely noticed, didn’t show any sign of concern as we made our way through the crowded guild.
Our destination was the reception counter.
The guild also handles tasks like compiling requests for specific materials.
The reception counter is where you accept and confirm requests, and in most Adventurers’ Guilds, it’s also where you register as a member.
We stood in front of one of the empty reception counters.
A petite woman was behind the counter, but for some reason, she looked obviously terrified of us.
She wouldn’t look this hopeless even if she was told to fight monsters without any weapons. Erika and I exchanged glances.
Our faces seemed to say, “Do you have any idea why?” Neither of us could think of a reason, so it was really puzzling.
I almost tilted my head in confusion but decided to speak to the guild staff since we couldn’t just stand there in silence.
“We’d like to register with the guild. Is this the right counter?”
What came back was silence.
The woman and I ended up staring at each other.
“Um…”
I couldn’t endure the ten seconds of silence.
“Yes!”
She responded with a loud, squeaky voice.
The gazes that had scattered to sneaking glances now focused on us again in full force.
Hmm, could it be that I’ve done something wrong?
The unexpected reaction of the guild staff made me start doubting my past actions.
