Chapter 59 – The Next Step
“Hey, Reo. Come in.”
“Sorry for intruding.”
Saturday, September 7th.
I was visiting Shiori’s house for some reason.
“Where’s Sakura?”
“She’s in my room. She’s still asleep.”
“I see.”
After yesterday’s incident, Shiori contacted me.
“Could you come over to my house tomorrow? It’s about…Sakura-chan.”
“What do you mean?”
To summarize what Shiori said, her parents are heading to the Miyano house on Saturday. After considering Sakura’s mental state, they decided not to take her with them. That’s why Shiori wanted me to come over.
It was obvious that some explanation was omitted, but I decided to obediently follow Shiori’s instructions because I know it’d be painful for me if I disobeyed her at a time like this.
And so, this morning, I’m at Shiori’s house.
“Now, sit there.”
“Sure.”
I was led into the living room and made to sit in one of the chairs surrounding the table. When Shiori sat opposite me, she glared at me.
“What did you do yesterday?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb. I saw you, Miyano Kaede, and a girl I don’t know being taken away by a teacher. Try to play dumb again. I’ll get mad.”
“Actually——”
Realizing that I couldn’t cover it up, I told Shiori the details. Shiori then held her head, and sighed loudly when I finished.
“…Do you understand what you’ve done?”
“I know.”
“It is not likely that the woman seduced him, but it’s still not a good thing. Revenge is one thing, and so is that kind of honey trap. Introduce that woman to me on Monday. I will talk to her personally.”
Even though she sternly warned me, Shiori was still holding her head in her hands, groaning. She understood that what Kaede did was wrong. Kaede hadn’t reflected on what happened with Sakura and ended up attacking another woman again. Still, it was also true that we had led him into a honey trap. With Shiori’s strong sense of justice, this situation must be particularly troubling for her.
“…If, by any chance, you get involved in a similar incident again, make sure you come to me first. And don’t hide it. Got it?”
“…Yeah. I’m really sorry.”
I bowed my head deeply to Shiori. Seeing me like that, Shiori sighed again, then said, “Let’s get to the main topic,” and headed for the fridge.
“That’s not the only reason I called Reo. I really wanted to talk about Sakura-chan.”
Shiori took out some ingredients with practiced hands and headed to the kitchen. When I stood up to help, I was stopped by “sit down.” I sat back down in my chair as I was told.
“Yesterday, I mentioned that my mother was taking care of Sakura-chan, right? At some point, Sakura-chan, who must have cried herself to exhaustion, fell asleep… but for some reason, she apparently said your name in her sleep. She was murmuring ‘Ibuse-senpai…'”
“…Eh, me?”
“Yes, you. Thanks to you, when I got home, there was a big fuss. My parents even wondered if you might have made a move on Sakura-chan.”
“No, no, no!! I never did that!! Absolutely not!!”
That’s a pretty wild accusation. Just because I’m three-timing, that doesn’t mean… Well, maybe it’s not that wild of an accusation after all.
“It took a lot of effort from my mother and me to convince my father not to contact you… Anyway, we decided it might be a bit of a shock treatment, but we’d have you meet her. Sakura still hasn’t opened up to us. But she trusts you… so we thought it might help. Oh, by the way, my parents aren’t coming home today, so they said you can stay over. You can use their bedroom if you need to sleep. And they’ve already prepared a toothbrush and other things for you, so no worries. Also——”
“Wait, wait, wait!! You just casually slipped in some important details there, didn’t you?!”
“Hmm? What are you talking about?”
I thought we were having a serious conversation, but it took a strange turn halfway through. Shiori continued cooking, her tone clearly amused. The delicious smell of bacon frying was coming from the kitchen and I was getting really hungry. This is unfair. It’s a food tease.
“Okay, go wake up Sakura-chan. Then the three of us can have breakfast.”
“…Okay.”
But after what happened with Kaede yesterday, I couldn’t look Shiori in the eye. I was also worried about Sakura’s condition. If meeting me could help her recover even a little, I’d be happy to see her.
Thinking that, I went to Shiori’s room and knocked on the door. However, there was no answer. Maybe Sakura was still asleep.
“…Sakura. Wake up.”
Next, I decided to call out her name. But there was still no answer. I couldn’t just go in without permission. I knocked again and called out.
“Breakfast is ready. If you don’t wake up, I’ll eat it all.”
The delicious smell was reaching the hallway. Shiori probably went out of her way to cook bacon for this reason. Still, there was no response, and just as I was about to give up and head back to the living room…
“Hmm… Good morning…”
The door to the room opened, and Sakura appeared, rubbing her sleepy eyes. She had probably mistaken me for Shiori’s father as she tried to greet me politely. But as soon as she saw me, her eyes widened and her face turned red.
“Wh-what… why…”
“…Morning. I’m glad to see you’re getting some good sleep.”
“…Aaahhh…”
“Sakura?!”
Sakura’s brain couldn’t keep up with the suddenness of the situation, and she collapsed.
