- Chapter 49 – Problem Teacher, Part 1
Swordsmanship classes had begun.
The teachers in charge of the combined swordsmanship class for two classes worked in a two-person system of main and assistant teachers, both hired externally.
The main teacher was the veteran Ramsey, who sported a well-suited beard. The assistant teacher was called Hens.
These two had, how should I put it, a relationship I did not quite understand. Basically, the main teacher Ramsey led the discussion, but Hens occasionally interrupted and changed the class content.
Yet, Ramsey usually did as Hens instructed. Moreover, Ramsey used polite language—I could not figure out which of them was the main teacher.
Also, the two teachers had completely different teaching methods. Hens insisted on his own way, refusing anything else and forcing students into a rigid mold.
In contrast, Ramsey allowed individuals to do things their own way to a certain extent. There were students who suited each method, so I could not say which way was superior.
Personality-wise, Ramsey was age-appropriate and gentle, but Hens had considerable problems.
He forced his way onto people, but when people criticized his method, he would throw tantrums and fly off the handle without question… Why was this guy even teaching?
Anyway, I quickly distanced myself from Hens and swung my sword on Ramsey’s side. Near Ramsey was comfortable. Partly because our personalities matched, but above all, we hit it off for a certain reason.
That reason was—
“Prince Zeke.”
“What?”
“I have a favor to ask.”
“I refuse.”
“Don’t refuse, please, come with me!”
This Ramsey was a former member of the capital knight order. His wife was the youngest daughter of a Viscount, and through that connection, though originally a commoner, he was barely treated as a semi-noble and had been entrusted with this job.
And what favor was he asking of me? To go with him to the former capital knight order.
The story began when I mentioned having connections with the capital knight order. Since then, Ramsey had been asking me about the knight order’s recent situation every class.
“If you’re that curious, why don’t you just visit the knight order?”
“Well, that’s true. But I’m a school teacher now. It’s hard to go… I quit the knight order and became a noble through circumstances, so I’m worried I’ll be treated as a traitor. You know, the knight order guys dislike nobles, right?”
“Ah…”
True, the capital knight order was composed entirely of commoners and did not much like nobles. But recently, I felt they did not hate them that much… no, Tarsen had said Beldiha beat up an arrogant noble to half-death and made the noble write the incident report instead. I did not know why Tarsen had to write the incident report when Beldiha was the one who messed up.
“Anyone except Beldiha should be fine.”
“Haah…”
The moment Beldiha’s name came up, Ramsey let out this deep sigh.
“Beldiha, when he was a rookie, I was his third instructor.”
“Huh, if you were his instructor… wait, third?”
Apparently, Beldiha had beaten up two instructors. The reason was that they had scolded him for trivial reasons… by the way, it was because Beldiha violated regulations, so it was not actually trivial.
“So please, come with me.”
“Eh…”
It was a school holiday. What if Misty happened to come that day? Though judging by the recent vibes, I did not think it would happen. That said, I had not been able to meet Garim and Debut much recently either, so thinking about it that way, perhaps it was not bad.
“Well, I’ll think about it positively.”
“Oh, that helps. I’ll reward you, so ask for anything.”
A reward, huh.
“Will you listen to my love troubles?”
“I see, understood. Should I start from how I met my wife?”
“No, I didn’t ask for that.”
I had said my love troubles, so he should not try to make me listen to his lovey-dovey stories.
“Hey, why are you doing that form! I taught you at the start.”
“Eh, but my household’s teacher told me to do it this way…”
“I’m teaching here! Do the form I told you to do!”
“But that form is completely different from my way.”
“Doesn’t matter! If I tell you to do it, do it! Don’t talk back!”
“…Yes.”
I heard Hens’s angry voice.
“He’s at it again. Can’t you do something?”
Ramsey looked somewhat exasperated and shook his head left and right.
“Status-wise he’s above me, so it’s impossible.”
I had thought their power relationship was strange, but hearing the story, Hens was apparently the eldest son of a Count house.
Though he was the eldest son, why was he teaching here? When I wondered that, apparently his family had recommended he yield the head position to his younger brother, but he definitely just lost in the succession dispute.
Besides, even if he lost in the succession dispute, he would normally be given some territory…
And regarding his relationship with Ramsey—though Ramsey had more years of experience, Ramsey was still just a semi-noble who was originally a commoner. Status-wise, Hens was overwhelmingly superior.
Could they not just do things peacefully?
I was hoping for that, but things did not go so smoothly.
