ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Over ten courts had been set up in the middle of the field, where clouds of dust blew fiercely across the ground. The dodgeball tournament, held in a knockout format with representatives from each class, felt completely different in atmosphere from the usual ball game tournaments.
“Now then, it’s that time of year again—the grand Aoba High Dodgeball Tournament! Each class may only have fifteen representatives participating per match, but the tournament itself is a full-class battle. Since students can be substituted between matches, if a class keeps advancing, all the girls can eventually take part. And now, our commentator, Kaise-san!”
“Announcer GKO-san! I’ve really been looking forward to this! Every year I’d see our upperclassmen doing the commentary and analysis for this big dodgeball event, and I kept thinking, someday, I want to stand on that stage too! And now—finally—I did it!!!”
Huh? Aren’t those the two from when I went to observe the cooking club? Wait, or was it the broadcasting club?
“That’s right, that’s right, I get it, Kaise-san. Once again, we’ll be bringing you live coverage from the Broadcasting Club—this is announcer GKO and commentator Kaise! And now, as we look across the courts, fierce warriors from every grade and class are taking their positions, each one declaring through their presence that they will be the champions of this year’s Aoba High Dodgeball Tournament!”
As for how they could possibly provide live commentary when ten matches were going on simultaneously…
“This year, with the cooperation of the Survey Corps members, a cameraman has been stationed at each court. We’ll be watching the footage from those cameras to deliver our commentary. So then, Kaise-san, who’s the player to watch this year?”
“That would have to be last year’s second-year champion, President Reika Toudou, wouldn’t it? She might look soft and fluffy, but when it comes to athletics, she’s a demon! Too strong! She’s way too strong. Even the most athletic clubs challenged her, and not a single one could defeat her in the end.”
So she was good at sports too, just like in volleyball, huh.
“Among the first-years this year, there are plenty of strong athletes, so it’ll probably turn into a clash between the sports-oriented classes.”
“Indeed. The twin beasts of the soccer club. The demon of the basketball club. The mermaid of the swim team. Those are likely to be the faces representing Aoba High this year.”
I had no idea who they were talking about.
“More than anything, I’m jealous of this year’s first-years!!! Why couldn’t we have been born just two years later…”
“You’re right. That’s my only regret too…”
Their gazes were directed toward a special platform. It had been specially set up by the student council president so that the Men’s Cheer Team could be seen from all classes.
From there, you could see three boys singing and dancing atop the platform. Although the announcers and commentators could see the platform from their booth, they couldn’t actually see the boys themselves… Unless they left their seats to peek.
“How many times have I regretted taking this role instead of being up there!!! And wh… Why is it forbidden to show the Men’s Cheer Team on the broadcast feed?! It’s too cruel!!!”
“Because of the Male Protection Law, filming boys without permission is prohibited. Only those who’ve received filming authorization directly from the Men’s Cheer Team are allowed to record them.”
Any footage posted on social media had been filmed only by cameramen officially requested by the Men’s Cheer Team. For this event, all other filming was strictly prohibited.
“At least let me hear their voices! I won’t miss a single note!!!”
“This is the life of a background extra, isn’t it… Future announcers and commentators, watch us closely and learn from our sacrifice.”
It was said that after that day, the number of female members submitting withdrawal notices from the Broadcasting Club sharply increased. When the first round ended, the Men’s Cheer Team took a break, hydrating themselves while changing costumes.
--------------
“It’s getting hot this afternoon.”
“Should we switch to lighter outfits?”
“A rash guard might be nice…”
“That’s a good idea. Hey, we still have the ones we used for the swim club, right?”
The four of us changed into swimwear-style costumes and headed out for the second round. The first round had proceeded smoothly, with the sports department steadily claiming victories. However, one class finally appeared that toppled part of the sports department’s dominance.
“Ohhh! Class 1-A is on a rampage! They’ve crushed another sports department class in the second round!”
At announcer GKO’s shout, the Men’s Cheer Team cheered as well. It really was exciting to see your classmates doing their best. Perhaps wary of Class 1-A’s advance to the semifinals, the sports department teams began focusing entirely on defense.
At the center of it all was the “demon” of the Basketball Club, Ayame Onizuka-san, relentlessly cornering 1-A.
“We can’t lose! Pass the ball to me!”
The tall Onizuka stood out brilliantly. Her powerful voice encouraging her classmates made her look like a beautiful warrior maiden. Beside her, a flicker of blue hair could be seen. It was Yuuna. With her small frame, she dodged the ball and fought alongside Onizuka-san.
Man, should I be cheering for 1-A or for my childhood friend? Well, either way, I’ll put all my feelings into cheering for both of them!
“Listen to my song!!!”
The solo track Youhei had made for me was a bold, self-centered “ore-sama” style song. Brushing open the front of my rash guard, I leaned forward and began to sing.
It started with a commanding shout—【Listen to my song!!!】—which was honestly embarrassing to yell every time. For a moment, even the girls playing dodgeball and the teachers stopped moving—the whole place fell silent.
“Freedom!”
The lyrics were pure “ore-sama” attitude, with lines like “Every woman is my servant,” “My one and only cute little kitten,” “I am freedom itself, bound by no one.” Basically stuff that would’ve been way too embarrassing to say if it weren’t in a song.
Ah, Yuuna’s sitting down and looking this way. Hey, it’s still the middle of a match! Ah. Kuramine-san just hit her with a ball. Told you so.
Before I knew it, Class 1-A had made a comeback and won the match.
I wonder if Yuuna’s okay.
As the song neared its end, my gaze wandered and met Terumi-senpai’s eyes. I struck the final pose and delivered the last line, pointing right at her.
“You belong to me!”
That possessive tone was super embarrassing too.
I wonder if Terumi-senpai enjoyed it. Wait, she’s sitting down too. Well, she’s probably just tired from the sports festival… Alright, one more match to go. Let’s give it our everything!!!
