Chapter 02: So Useless It’s Almost Pitiful
The sword that had suddenly been swung down—
Did not split Taiga in half.
It stopped just inches from cutting him.
“W-What? Huh? What’s going on?”
Taiga stood frozen in confusion.
Why had she suddenly tried to kill him?
And why had she stopped?
Carefully, he looked at the woman.
She seemed to be talking to someone… but there was no one there.
She wasn’t holding anything like a phone, either.
Then again, this was another world.
Maybe she was using some kind of magic or skill to communicate with someone far away.
Taiga couldn’t hear the other voice, but judging from what she was saying, whoever she was speaking to had just stopped her from killing him.
“…Yes. Urza’s Hero. Right here… But! …Understood.”
The conversation ended.
The woman let out a quiet sigh.
Still pointing the tip of her sword at Taiga, she spoke again.
“Our master says they want to speak with you.”
“W-With me?”
“Yes. About Goddess Urza. The one who threw you away.”
“…About Goddess Urza…”
The moment her master’s interest turned to Urza, it became clear.
There was definitely some kind of history between them and that goddess.
That part was fine.
The real problem was—
Taiga had been dumped into this forest without any explanation.
He barely understood what was happening himself.
What was he even supposed to say?
He hesitated for a moment.
Seeing that reaction, the woman’s lips curved slightly—
And she raised her blade again.
“If you’d rather not talk, that’s fine. It just means I can swing this sword down without any regrets.”
“I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything! I was summoned and then dumped almost immediately, so I don’t know much—but I’ll share whatever I can!”
“Good.”
Taiga had no intention of protecting the goddess who caused all of this.
She had thrown him into a deadly forest.
He had been chased by magical beasts.
And now he had a sword pointed at his neck.
If talking could keep him alive, he would gladly spill every detail he knew.
Seemingly satisfied with his desperate answer, the woman finally sheathed her sword.
“Then I’ll take you to our master. Try not to cause any trouble.”
“Y-Yes!”
“Oh, and… try saying ‘Display Status.’”
“Huh? O-Okay! ‘Display Status,’ right?”
Now that he was finally out of immediate danger, Taiga followed her instructions.
He focused and thought, Display Status.
This time, instead of appearing only in his mind, his status screen materialized right in front of him.
Name: Taiga Orikami
Race: Human
Class: Hero (Goddess Urza)
Age: 17
Level: 1
Unique Skill:
-Self-Destruct
Passive Skill:
-Fleet Footed: Lv 1
“Ah—my skills increased! But… ‘Fleet Footed’? …Uh, is this okay?”
He had been too busy running for his life to notice, but apparently he had gained a new skill besides Self-Destruct.
Still, Fleet Footed wasn’t exactly impressive.
It felt… somewhat underwhelming.
Half pleased, half disappointed, Taiga looked at the woman as she examined his displayed status.
She stared at him with eyes filled with pity.
“Life’s rough for you, huh.”
“Ah… so ‘Self-Destruct’ really is that bad of a skill?!”
“Well, shall we go?”
“It’s so bad you don’t even feel the need to be cautious anymore, right?!”
He had already suspected it from the goddess’s reaction.
But having it silently confirmed like this still stung.
Just moments ago, this woman had treated him as a potential threat—possibly a pawn of the goddess.
Now she looked at him like he was just… a pitiful kid.
Apparently, his skill was so worthless that he wasn’t even worth being wary of.
That realization hurt more than he expected.
Still, with mixed emotions swirling inside him, Taiga followed after her.
