Chapter 30: Intruders
The night at the campsite was surprisingly quiet.
Only the sound of insects and the distant footsteps of teachers on patrol echoed through the air.
After finishing his bath and changing into his gym clothes, Kouta lay on his bed in the boys’ dorm, staring up at the ceiling alone.
(…It’s quiet. Being alone really does calm you down.)
All things considered, they had walked 20 km that day, and there had been the campfire too.
His body reached its limit, and his mind started to drift halfway into the world of dreams–.
At that moment.
–Knock, knock.
A sound at the door.
(…?)
He checked the clock; it was past lights-out at 10 p.m.
Of course, going outside was forbidden. No one should come.
“…Shh! Don’t make a sound!”
“Is this really the boys’ room?”
“Yeah, Kouta-kun’s name was on the room assignment sheet!”
“For real!? Oh man, this is getting exciting!”
(What? Huh!?)
The moment Kouta bolted upright–.
“Kouta-kun, you awake?”
…A familiar voice. It was Aya.
But then, another voice followed in a whisper from behind her.
“Hang on, Aya, your voice is too loud…!”
“Quiet, Yuri, it’s your footsteps! We’ll get caught!”
“Everyone, calm down a bit! Be a little quieter!”
(Hey, hey, hey… no, wait, wait, wait!?)
Kouta’s heart leaped.
(The girls’ dorm is in that other building, right!? How did they get all the way here!)
A flashlight’s beam flickered through the door crack. Whispers overlapped in hushed tones.
“Hey, Kouta, we thought since it’s a rare chance, we should have a sleepover chat.”
“It’d be boring with just girls, so we figured we’d let you join in♡”
“It’s against what the teachers said, but… well, everyone crossing on a red light makes it less scary, right?”
(No, that’s not okay at all, that attitude!!)
Kouta pulled the blanket over himself and trembled as he desperately thought.
(This is bad; if they get caught, I’ll get in trouble! No, even before that, the girls would get yelled at way more! And everyone’s totally lost it from the sleepover hype!)
But the girls didn’t stop.
Otowa whispered.
“Is it locked?”
“Oh, it really is!”
“All right, Yuri, try picking it with a hairpin!”
“That’s a crime!?”
“No, it’s an intrusion case born of love♡”
–Click.
(It opened!?)
“Here we go!”
The door flew open with a bang.
“Coming in~!!!”
A horde of girls tumbled in with a whoop. Ten… no, even more.
Otowa, Yuri, Aya, and even classmates from other groups all mixed in.
Some in pajamas, some with their hair down, some looking sleepy yet weirdly hyped up. The nice scent of girls fresh from the bath spread through the room.
And all of them grinned the moment they spotted Kouta.
“Kouta-ku~n! You must’ve been lonely~?”
“This room’s huge! A single room for one guy is so unfair, right!?”
“Let’s talk love stories! It’s a special camp night and all!”
“It’d be no fun if we just got hyped up among ourselves~!”
“No, no, no, no!? Hang on a second!? This is totally not allowed!”
Kouta flailed and backed away.
“It’s fine, it’s fine; the teachers are done with rounds!”
“Someone stand guard in the hall~. Okay, Aya, you’re on it!”
“Huh!? Wait, me!?”
Aya stood in front of the hall and gave a hand signal.
“All clear, no one’s around!”
The girls dumped snacks all over the desk.
“Come on, Kouta-kun, school trip nights mean love talks, right?”
“Yeah, yeah, we’re tired of doing it just among girls~”
“Actually, we wanna hear stuff from a guy’s perspective!”
(I can’t escape this anymore…)
Kouta got pushed to the wall, and the girls started forming a circle around him.
“Okay, then the talk theme is ‘your type’!”
“I have to say mine too!?”
“Of course you do~; you’re the main event, Kouta-kun!”
(Spare me…)
But before he could stop them, the girls got all hyped up.
Maybe from the camp night energy, the girls had turned into a runaway train.
“All right, Yuri first!”
“Huh, me!? Um…”
“Huh, what about you, Yuri? You’re gonna say ‘someone like Kouta-kun,’ right?”
“Huh!? N-no… well, yeah, that’s right!”
“Eeeeek~!!! That’s basically a confession!”
The room erupted in chaos.
Moonlight filtered through the curtain gap, lighting up everyone’s faces.
Seeing their usual guarded expressions run wild like this left Kouta a little speechless.
(…Sigh, at this point, I don’t even have the energy to stop them.)
“Kouta-kun, tell us your type too?”
Otowa leaned in a bit closer.
“What kind of girl do you like?”
–And right then.
“The teacher’s coming–!!!”
Aya’s shout.
“Everyone, get down!!!”
“No way, no way, no way!!”
The girls scrambled under beds and desks in a flurry. The room turned into total chaos.
Giggles from under the bed and the sound of the teacher’s footsteps passing outside.
(We’re definitely getting yelled at… I didn’t do anything wrong.)
Kouta clutched his head.
But the girls laughed happily.
As if they were fully enjoying this out-of-the-ordinary “night with a boy.”

Chapter 31: Curry Making
“…Did everyone sleep well?”
The homeroom teacher’s low voice made the air freeze in an instant. It was a voice that carried far more chill than the morning cold, loaded with serious anger.
Among the students lined up in formation, Kouta shrugged and dropped his gaze.
(It’s over… He’s totally figured it out…)
The girls all looked sleepy as they hung their heads.
“Anyone who went to the boys’ room last night—step forward, all of you.”
Silence. But soon, small footsteps echoed about a dozen times.
Otowa, Yuri, Aya, and a bunch of others. They lined up in front of the group and bowed their heads in unison.
“S-Sorry…!”
“We were just talking a little…!”
“We really didn’t do anything!”
The teacher’s brows furrowed.
“The problem is that you went to the ‘boys’ room’ in the first place. Doesn’t matter what you did there.”
“But sir!” Yuri said softly, pushing back a little.
“Kouta was the only boy there, you know? It’s such a fun sleepover—don’t you think it’s sad for him?”
“Of course he’d feel lonely sleeping alone at night!”
“Yeah, yeah, we just wanted to cheer him up together…”
(Wait, did I get cheered up? By them? What exactly got cheered up?)
“…Cheer him up?”
The teacher crossed his arms and gave everyone a steely look.
“Should I ask the boy himself what kind of ‘cheering up’ that was?”
(Stop, please for real stop.)
Everyone’s eyes turned to Kouta all at once.
Pressure. No escape.
“W-Well, um… yeah, I got cheered up, sure…”
“How exactly?”
“Uh… we talked about, like, romance stuff…”
“Oh, romance talk, huh?”
“…………Yes.”
Even people from other classes started buzzing, and the girls involved covered their faces in embarrassment.
Otowa whispered, “Sorry…” under her breath.
“…You girls, are you actually sorry?”
The teacher’s voice dropped even lower.
“Don’t you know the difference between boys and girls? What do you think school events are for?”
The girls all bowed their heads and said, “Yes…” in unison.
“Takeda, you were reckless too. You should’ve stopped them from calling us over or something.”
“Y-Yes, sir…”
“So, everyone involved—time for a lecture from the teachers right now!”
The guilty ones started murmuring in a panic.
“S-Sir! Everyone?!”
“Of course.”
“What about breakfast…?”
“Eat while you reflect.”
(Ugh… Hell is confirmed… This is the worst.)
The girls exchanged glances and looked downcast. But among them, Aya let out a small laugh.
“But… it was fun, right?”
“Yeah… Kouta’s sleeping face was cute.”
“Hey, cut that out!”
The teacher’s gaze twitched.
“Say that again.”
“N-No, it’s nothing!”
The line got messy as they held back laughs, and the teacher sighed.
“You kids… you’re really a handful.”
“If there’s a next time, I’ll call your parents. Got it?”
“Yes, sir!”
They all replied with energetic voices.
It was hard to tell if they were sorry or not, but the mood somehow felt lighter.
(…Ah, I’m beat. Why does this always happen to me?)
Kouta looked up at the sky. On the second morning of camp, his mind was already worn out like he’d run a full marathon.
They were all wiped out from the morning lecture, but the air changed completely once cooking time hit in the afternoon. With one word from the teacher—”Make curry freely in your groups!”—everyone’s energy shot up.
Smoke rose one after another from the outdoor stoves, mixed with the clanging of iron pots, laughter, and the occasional scream.
“For now, a plain old regular curry should be fine, right?”
Kouta said it, and Otowa nodded, with the other group members agreeing.
“Yeah. Curry’s hard to mess up no matter who makes it.”
“We’ll handle the cooking, so you manage the fire, Kouta.”
Kouta fanned the flames with a paper fan, savoring the rare feeling of a “normal job.” The group vibe was good—they chopped veggies together, added spices, and the pot simmered along smoothly.
—But the peace didn’t last long.
A weirdly sweet smell drifted over from the next group. Kouta turned cautiously, and there were Aya and Yuri. Both in aprons, peering into their pot with serious faces for some reason.
“…What are you making?”
Kouta asked, and Aya grinned.
“Um, ‘Lover’s Sweet Curry’!”
“Huh?”
“We threw in bananas, mandarins, and then chocolate, candy—every sweet thing we could find! It’s sweet and spicy, super sweet, right?”
Yuri nodded solemnly beside her.
“I think it’s a revolution in taste.”
Kouta instinctively stepped back. Otowa whispered, “Don’t even try it,” in his ear, but it was too late. Aya and Yuri charged at him with spoons.
“Here, Kouta, ahh♡”
“Come on, tell us what you think!”
“Whoa, wait, bad vibes only—hot! Is this really curry!?”
The moment it hit his mouth, a brutal wave of sweetness, spice burn, and what was probably candy grit slammed his brain. From the shock, Kouta just crouched silently and stared at the grass.
“…It packs more punch than it looks,” Otowa said.
Aya peered down worriedly and reflected seriously, “Maybe I should’ve added more banana after all.”
After that, other groups brought over stuff like “stir-fry soba soup curry” or “miso milk risotto,” turning the cooking area into a total battlefield.
No surprise that Kouta’s group’s “regular curry” won first prize just because the teacher said, “This one’s actually edible.”
That sweet hell taste would haunt his dreams for a while.
Once the lunch-making chaos wrapped up, the afternoon flew by with cleanup and light games, and before they knew it, it was time to head home.
The bus wound slowly down the mountain road at dusk. Outside the windows, trees glowed red.
Everyone, exhausted, dozed off here and there. Kouta yawned softly while gazing blankly at the view.
Otowa dozed in the seat next to him, while Aya and Yuri, up front, were still reflecting on the day’s “sweet curry.”
“The chocolate was probably too much…”
“Next time, let’s try heavy cream.”
Kouta let out a small laugh at their back-and-forth.
Suddenly, the homeroom teacher’s voice came over the bus speakers.
“Everyone, how was nature class this time? There was that lecture mess, but you all cooperated well in the end.”
Small applause broke out around the bus at his words. Kouta clapped along too.
—Thinking back, it had been an incredibly intense two days.
He’d collapsed from the long hike, caused a fuss with the folk dance, and at night the girls sneaked in and got yelled at by the teacher… Honestly, it felt like there wasn’t a single second to relax. But somehow, it wasn’t bad.
“…That was fun.”
Kouta murmured softly, and Otowa, half-asleep, opened her eyes.
“Did you say something?”
“Nah, nothing.”
He smiled as he said it, and Otowa smiled back, looking relieved.
Eventually, the bus rolled back to school. Nature class was over, and everyday life began again.
