ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
A lot had happened, but the test was finally over. The three of us had prepared more thoroughly than ever before, and each of us felt like we did pretty well. But we couldn’t let our guard down. Even if it felt like it went well, you never knew until the results came back. Especially for Riria.
“Alright, is everyone here? I’ve got the results from the last test, so I’m handing them out now!”
Our homeroom teacher casually said that at the start of class. With the answer sheets for all subjects came a printed sheet showing our scores and rankings—our report cards. Apparently, scores marked in red meant you failed that subject.
Hinayo and I were aiming for a rank boost. Riria was just trying to avoid failing. With those different goals in mind, the test results were announced—!
“…So, how did you two do?”
“I-I managed to move up a little in the rankings, thanks to you! I’m still not great at the humanities subjects, though, so there’s room for improvement…”
Hinayo replied with a bit of excitement, showing us her report card. Of course, she was ranked in the upper tiers—higher than me.
“Whoa, nice going, Nishimeya-san. You’re at the top of the grade in chemistry! I’ve never even seen someone ranked number one before… I mean, I knew it was possible, but still.”
“P-please don’t praise me too much… When people say that kind of thing, I always end up messing something up somehow…”
“Well, in any case, you hit your goal. Congrats, Nishimeya-san.”
“Haau…”
Her strongest subject, chemistry, had led the charge, and her other science subjects were also high-scoring across the board. She seemed to struggle a bit with classics and English, which was probably where the other smart students pulled ahead. Overcoming your weaknesses wasn’t easy, but considering how much potential she still had, I thought her performance was really impressive.
“H-how about you, Hirakawa-kun…?”
“I did okay. Went up a little, but nowhere near your level.”
I’d gone from smack-dab in the middle to slightly above average. Still, an improvement was an improvement, and that was more than enough to negotiate for a raise in my monthly allowance. The fact that I still had room to grow was also a big plus.
So, both Hinayo and I were in the clear.
The one we were really concerned about was Riria. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say everything depended on her.
“So… Sotogahama-san, how did you do…?”
Riria had been silently staring at her paper since she got her report card.
Uh-oh… Did she bomb it? Did she freeze up because she couldn’t accept reality…?
“…Huh? Oh, what? What’s up, you two?”
“Well, we were just wondering how your results turned out. You’ve been zoning out this whole time, Sotogahama-san.”
“Oh, sorry, sorry. I was just a little surprised by the results.”
“Surprised…? Wait, don’t tell me you didn’t manage to avoid failing marks?”
“It’s the opposite! Look, look at this!”
Riria showed her report card to Hinayo and me.
…Huh? Wait a second, this is…
“No failing grades… Not a single one!”
“That’s not even the main point… What is this score…?”
“Math and science are just barely passing, but… English…”
“Sotogahama-san, you’ve got a real talent for English, huh…”
Looking at the English score column, it was a three-digit number. Since the test was scored out of 100 points, that could only mean one thing. And true enough, next to that score, her English rank was marked: “1st in grade.”
“How about that? I’ve always been able to score high in English, but this time I finally got a perfect score!”
“Th-that’s amazing… But how? You were spending all your time studying your weakest science subjects, so I figured you wouldn’t have had much time for English.”
“Hehehehehe! That’s just my natural talent, I guess? I’m just not someone who can be contained by this tiny island nation.”
“Well, that might be true… I mean, your classical Japanese score is barely passing and your modern Japanese is practically resting on the bottom tier.”
“Shut up! Whatever, as long as I avoid failing the subject, it’s fine!”
In any case, it seemed all the studying paid off. Even the questions she’d gambled on in the past exams, she managed to get right. The kind of girl who could do it if she tried. That was Riria Sotogahama.
“Alright then, now that the tests are over, how about the three of us go celebrate?”
“You sure? I always figured Sotogahama-san would go all out with your popular female friends for a big celebration.”
“Well yeah, usually I would. But this time, I only passed thanks to you two helping me, so I figured I should properly thank you two first.”
“You’re really dutiful about this kind of stuff, huh?”
“So let’s go out and do something. My treat.”
Freed from the pressure of exams, Riria was clearly in a generous mood. You could say she was being downright bighearted.
Although, in her case, it’s usually not her wallet string that’s loose, but the string on those side-tie panties she sometimes wears. Her thighs are thicker than her waist, after all.
“A celebration, huh… That means maybe yakiniku…?”
“Ooh, I’m down for yakiniku. I bet I can eat enough to make it worth the price in an all you can eat buffet.”
“I doubt that’s even possible, though…”
We tossed around ideas for a celebration. Besides yakiniku, we brought up karaoke, bowling, all-you-can-eat desserts, arcades, and more… We were throwing out suggestion after suggestion, but none of them felt quite right.
Then, Hinayo, who’d been quiet the whole time, timidly raised her hand like she wanted to say something.
“Um… Would you two like to hang out at my place…? W-we could order pizza or something…”
“At your house, Nishimeya-san?”
“Y-yeah. I’ve always wanted to invite some friends over and stay up playing games and stuff. My parents aren’t home today, so…”
We agreed on the spot. Nishimeya-san’s room had a collection of books that rivaled a manga café, and judging by her demeanor, she probably had a bunch of games and movies, too.
After the test, I just wanted to chill out and relax. The thought of washing down delivery pizza with Mountain Dew while watching movies or reading manga sounded perfect. Come to think of it, I still hadn’t finished reading AraShota, so this also served as the perfect opportunity to read AraShota.
Since Hinayo’s place was close to the school, we headed there right away…Completely unaware that someone was watching us along the way.
