Chapter 30: I Don’t Have Any Other Choice but to Ride This Big Wave…!

“Nishimeya-san, can I talk to you for a moment?”

“Ye-Yesh…?”

On my way back from watching Fujisaki-kun’s match, I stopped by the restroom and got approached by Sotogahama-san. She was from the popular girls’ team, so I had a bad feeling about this. If I handled this interaction poorly and ended up being bullied by her, that would be awful…

Come to think of it, she entered the restroom at the exact same time as me. Is this what they call a “group bathroom trip”…? That’s something extroverted girls do a lot… 

For an ugly introverted girl like me, she was too dazzling and frankly speaking, painful to watch. 

“I’ll be blunt. What exactly is your relationship with Fujisaki-kun?”

“Huh…? F-Fujisaki-kun?”

The unexpected question made my voice crack. I had assumed she was going to ask about Hirakawa-kun, but apparently not.

“Umm… He just invited me to watch the match, so there’s nothing particularly special between us…”

“Really? I thought for sure you two were close.”

“N-no, not at all.”

“Hmm… You know, I watched all the players carefully during today’s match, and… Yeah, Fujisaki-kun is definitely the best one.”

“The best…?”

“Yeah. The best.”

“By that, do you mean… In that way…?”

“Of course. A tall, lean, muscular guy of that caliber is rare. He’s practically a national treasure. The runner-up would be that first-year who subbed in during the match. That kid has potential. Might be worth investing in early.”

“O-oh…”

This person really had nothing but lewd thoughts in her head. She was way too obsessed with tall, lean, muscular guys. Sure, being attracted to those traits was a basic human instinct. I could understand why people would be drawn to a body like that. But those physical traits weren’t everything… At least, not to me. 

In the end, compatibility was the most important thing.  I’d rather be with someone I could talk to comfortably, like Hirakawa-kun. Fujisaki-kun was kind and definitely a good person, but… For my personal ranking, Hirakawa-kun was already far ahead in first place. Even today, when we decided to go to the city gym together, I ran through so many simulated conversations in my head to make sure I had topics ready to talk about with him.

I somehow managed to talk to him naturally until the match started.  I did my best. I didn’t look awkward, right…? I even bought the same drink as him—for the “mirroring effect”—even though I wasn’t really good with carbonated drinks.

Oh, and I also secretly took some pictures. While Fujisaki-kun’s big sister and Sotogahama-san were busy deleting the stolen shots they took, I made sure to snap a clear picture of you, Hirakawa-kun. …Well, it wasn’t a picture of the match, so it should be fine, right?

“So, in other words, Fujisaki-kun is still available?”

“I-I don’t know if he’s available, but… At the very least, there’s nothing like that between us…”

“Hmm, okay then.”

“Phew…”

Sotogahama-san’s strangely intimidating interrogation ended surprisingly quickly. I let out a sigh of relief. With nothing in the way, my chest was easy to pat down. Not that my flat chest was something to brag about.

Either way, thank goodness… I was finally free. Or so I thought, but she took the conversation in an even more unexpected direction.

“In that case, Nishimeya-san, let’s be friends!”

“Fwaah!? J-just like that!?”

“There’s no such thing as ‘gradually’ or ‘suddenly’ when it comes to making friends.”

“But we never talked before today…”

“Doesn’t matter. My motto is ‘Friends in five seconds flat.'”

“…S-so much social confidence…”

I couldn’t bring myself to comment on how heavily influenced by adult videos her motto sounded. If it were Hirakawa-kun, he’d probably know exactly how to handle this. As expected of Hirakawa-kun. The sudden proposal took me by surprise, but when I thought about it rationally, becoming friends with Sotogahama-san wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I wasn’t good with the popular girls’ group, but out of all of them, she seemed relatively approachable even for an introvert like me. Having a connection to someone influential in the class was never a bad thing. She was probably trying to use my recent closeness with Fujisaki-kun to get closer to him. But at the same time, if I became friends with her, I could use this connection to get closer to Hirakawa-kun too.

This was an amazing opportunity. A true WIN-WIN situation. I had to ride this big wave. …Wait, wasn’t “Big Wave” from Mac, not WIN? (It was for the iPhone.)

“O-okay… If you’re fine with it, Sotogahama-san…”

“Really? Yay! Then give me your contact info! Oh, and where do you live? Do you use SENLY?”

“H-huh…?”

Please don’t bombard me with so much information all at once! Just talking to an outgoing gyaru is already enough to drain my energy away… Also, what even is SENLY…?

“Huh? Nishimeya-san, you don’t know SENLY?”

“Uh… Embarrassingly enough, no…”

“It’s a location-sharing app! All my friends use it.”

“L-location sharing…? What’s fun about that…?”

“Huh? Don’t you ever wonder which café your friends are at or who they’re hanging out with?”

No.

That was what I wanted to say. I just wanted to reject it outright. Why would I want to share my location with other people? It wasn’t like I ever went anywhere other than home, school, or my part-time job.

But then, an idea struck me. What if I got Hirakawa-kun to join too? Wouldn’t it be nice to have his location information? No, I didn’t want it. I NEED it.

I wasn’t trying to connect with Sotogahama-san. I was using her to get Hirakawa-kun’s location information!

“…You know, that does sound a little interesting.”

“Right? Then go ahead and install it. I’ll send you an invite!”

“Ye-Yesh…”

Following her instructions, I downloaded the SENLY app. A friend request popped up immediately, and I was now connected with Sotogahama-san.

“Alright, nice to meet you, Nishimeya-san! Oh, and if you ever add Fujisaki-kun as a friend, introduce me to him, okay?”

“Ri-Right…”

So that was her real goal. I had just been used to building a bridge toward Fujisaki-kun. But that was fine. Because I was going to use this to build my own bridge toward Hirakawa-kun…! That night, after somehow managing to get Hirakawa-kun to accept my SENLY friend request, I spent the entire night staring at his location information.
