“What’s wrong, Ayame-san? You said Haruto hates you now…?”
“Ugh… Uuh… He found out that I secretly went to watch his match today… And then he told me I must never come again…”
“‘Must never,’ he said… That must mean you must’ve done something really bad, Ayame-san.”
“I-I didn’t do something bad or anything…”
“How many minutes of Haruto’s ‘permanent archive footage’ do you have in total?”
“Enough to fill a one-terabyte hard drive to the brim.”
“That’s obviously the reason…”
I let out a big sigh over the phone. Ayame-san seemed to be much more attached to Haruto than I had thought.
“But, but, but! Everyone keeps photos and videos of their family, right?”
“There are limits to everything. Filling up an entire hard drive is over the top.”
I once found my dad’s external hard drive and peeked inside, only to discover it was packed with adult videos. And that was only a 500-gigabyte hard drive. A full terabyte? That was an insane amount of footage. The fact that her recording subject was her younger brother made it even more disturbing.
What does she even use that footage for? …Wait, what do I mean by ‘use’?
“What should I do… If Haru-kun keeps hating me, I won’t be able to go on living…”
“Now you’re being dramatic.”
“Please, Asahi-kun… Can you somehow convince Haru-kun for me?”
“No matter what I say, I don’t think Haruto will change his mind.”
“Noooo…”
To be fair, Ayame-san had helped me study and even gave me one of the few Valentine’s chocolates I received from someone other than my family. It wouldn’t feel right to just turn her down completely. I should at least give her some advice. I recalled a phrase I read in AraShota the other day.
“You can’t change other people, but you can change yourself.”
“W-What do you mean…?”
“It means you should change, Ayame-san. So that Haruto won’t hate you anymore.”
I had to admit, I sounded kind of cool just now. Though, considering the world had completely changed, yet I remained the same, I conveniently ignored the irony.
“I should change…?”
“Yes. Right now, you’re completely dependent on Haruto. You need to gradually lower that dependency.”
“How do I do that…?”
“Hmm… For example, maybe try getting into a new ‘oshi’?”
“There’s no boy in the world cooler or cuter than Haru-kun.”
“That mindset is what needs to change. Haruto is important to you, but you should at least make an effort to shift your attention to others.”
“I don’t know if I can do that…”
“If you can’t, Haruto will keep hating you forever.”
“Ugh… I don’t want that…”
I practically blackmailed her into agreeing. I might actually be pretty good at persuasive sales tactics. After a long pause, Ayame-san finally gave in.
“Alright… I’ll try to find another oshi besides Haru-kun.”
“That’s the spirit.”
“Though, I haven’t decided who to oshi yet…”
“Anything works. An idol, an actor, a sports player… Even an anime character or a cute animal.”
“Hmm… Nothing really clicks for me…”
“Then maybe find someone who resembles Haruto?”
“That’s… Not quite right either… I think I just can’t fall for someone I don’t know at all.”
“So it has to be someone you’re familiar with?”
“Not just anyone, but I’ll think about it. Thanks for listening to my problems, Asahi-kun.”
“No problem. Happy to help.”
“I’ll treat you to lunch as a thank-you. Think about what you want to eat.”
“W-Wait, are you sure?”
“Yeah. My part-time job just gave me a raise, so I can afford a little splurge.”
“Thank you in advance!”
Feeling lucky, I ended the call. Fried chicken sounded good. Maybe a Chinese restaurant? Fried chicken seemed amazing. I couldn’t wait for the treat.
Since I had been on the phone for a while, I figured I should take a quick bath. Just as I was about to head to the bathroom, my phone chimed with a message notification. The sender was Hinayo.
『Sorry for messaging you so late, Hirakawa-kun. I had a great time today. On the way home, Sotogahama-san invited me to install this app, but I felt a bit uneasy doing it alone, so I thought I’d ask if you’d like to join too. Apparently, this app is really popular among her friends.』
After her somewhat lengthy message, she attached a link to an app store page. I tapped the link and was directed to the page for a location-sharing app called SENLY. I had heard rumors about it. Apparently, it was trending among the social butterfly crowd. It allowed close friends to share their real-time locations, strengthening their connections by revealing their whereabouts.
Riria had likely invited Hinayo without much thought. But for Hinayo, being exposed to the extrovert culture was like experiencing the arrival of foreign warships. It was only natural for her to feel overwhelmed. I wasn’t particularly familiar with the app either, but since Hinayo was making an effort to change, I figured I’d give it a try alongside her.
Maybe I could even invite Haruto too—if he joined, he and Hinayo might grow even closer. That seemed like a great idea.
『Okay! I’ll install it too.』
I sent my reply and downloaded the app. Before long, both Hinayo and Riria became my friends on the app. I decided I would invite Haruto after I got out of the bath. With that, I headed toward the bathroom.
…At that moment, I had no way of knowing just how important this app would become.
