Chapter 44: Monster
No way.
Did I really take down so many of them?
How did I even do that?
It’s impossible.
I probably lost consciousness after being punched by the man.
During that time, Aoi must have gone on a rampage.
That was the only explanation.
There was no other way to make sense of it.
“Aoi, you know I’ve never been in a fight before.
There’s no way I could take down so many men.
It must have been you who did it.”
I looked at AoI’s face.
She was covering her body with her hands.
Her bare skin was visible through the torn t-shirt.
I took off my shirt and put it on her.
“I’m just glad you’re safe, Aoi. I was really scared…”
I couldn’t help but hug her.
I had to.
Aoi stiffened in my embrace, her body going rigid.
“Koichi…”
Her shoulders were shaking.
“You must have been even more scared.
It’s my fault for being so weak and never being able to do anything… I’m sorry.”
“…”
Aoi wrapped her arms around my back and hugged me back.
“I thought I was going to be humiliated and killed…
I was so scared,”
She said in a small voice.
But then, she quickly added,
“Damn it! Forget what I just said! Pretend it never happened!”
She tried to escape from the embrace.
But I held her tightly and had no intention of letting go.
“If you’re scared, just say so.
There’s no need to put on a brave face.”
I gently stroked AoI’s head.
“Ouch! You’re… too strong. It hurts.”
“Eh? Sorry.”
As I relaxed my grip,
“Koichi! Behind you!”
Aoi shouted.
I turned around in response to her warning.
Five of the men had regained consciousness and were approaching me from behind.
“Oh! Are you feeling better now? Are you okay…?”
I asked the men in concern, but for some reason, one of the men looked terrified and fell to his knees.
The other four took off running.
The man who was left behind stared at me intently.
“You’re… a monster…”
Is what he said.
He had wet himself.
It seemed he had lost control of his bladder.
“A monster? What do you mean?”
I looked behind me, but there was no monster, only Aoi.
The man who had soiled himself crawled out of the room on all fours.
He must have hit his head hard and was still confused.
I hoped he wouldn’t suffer any long-term effects.
“Are these guys really going to be okay? They don’t seem to be regaining consciousness.”
I looked at the men who were still lying motionless and asked Aoi.
“I checked them briefly, and they should be fine. Many of them are severely injured, though.
They don’t seem to be in life-threatening conditions.
Let’s get out of this building, Koichi.
The others are starting to wake up too.”
Aoi and I held hands as we left the building.
We ran up the ramp of the underground parking lot.
Then we hid in the shadows of the bushes and waited for Matsui to arrive.
