Chapter 30: Don’t Call Me a Coward
As Douglas, my younger brother, explained the situation in a loud enough voice to be heard by our guests, our father Edward’s expression changed from bitterness to relief, as if everything had been resolved.
The aristocrats around him, however, remained puzzled by his sudden change in demeanour.
It was clear to everyone that our father, who seemed to have been taken in by a scam artist, was nothing but a dupe.
This was especially true for the nobles, who were used to being deceived and deceiving others on a daily basis. They were like pitiful creatures who jumped at sweet words that were obviously traps just because they didn’t want to admit that their opinions were wrong.
Nevertheless, my incompetence as the eldest son and Douglas’s excellence was well-known among the nobility. They were still considering whether to cut ties with our father, despite looking down on him. They were waiting to see the outcome of this mock battle before making a decision.
“Oh, that’s right! You’re not like your older brother! You’re a truly reliable son! And it doesn’t matter if he can use magic! As long as Douglas wins, we’re good!”
They were so oblivious to the changes in their surroundings that they didn’t even notice it. Especially my brother, who, unlike our father, was convinced of his own excellence and didn’t realize his arrogance. This only adds to his poor character.
If someone as arrogant as him were to inherit the Kvist family, they would inevitably continue to decline, as fraudsters would quickly swindle the family’s funds.
There is a saying from my past life that says that one should get rid of incompetent people with a strong inclination to act before taking on a powerful enemy. There are likely many nobles who are trying to take advantage of my brother’s inheritance, and they are like insects swarming over sweet nectar, even going so far as to send their daughters to be noticed by Douglas. Little do they know, I am using their behaviour to identify and remember their faces.
It’s actually quite convenient to be labelled as incompetent during times like this, as it makes it easier for me to observe the nobles’ behaviour and manage the estate more efficiently in the future.
“Hey, you scum. Since you said you don’t need either the wooden sword or the magic wand, it’s fine to throw them away, right? It was Father’s last act of kindness, and yet you dismiss it so easily. Since you’ve stated you won’t use them, you won’t call me a coward if I use the magic wand or sword against an unarmed opponent, right?”
As I sorted out the trustworthy and potentially troublesome aristocrats, Douglas approached me, perhaps having finished his conversation with our father.
