Chapter 125: Making Me Feel Even Worse
“Thank you so much, Saint-sama!”
“You’re welcome.”
It was just a piece of bread and two cookies.
Yet, the orphans shower me with smiles and words of gratitude as if they received birthday presents.
Receiving those smiles and words of gratitude makes me feel it was all worth distributing the bread and cookies. In return, I receive courage and energy from them. So, it feels like I’m receiving more than I gave.
“Saint-sama, let’s play!”
“Saint-sama, let’s play hide-and-seek!”
After the children quickly finished eating the bread and cookies I handed out, they invited me to play, just like always.
Interacting with these kids leaves no room in my mind for the gloomy feelings caused by recent unpleasant events, and it’s safe to say that it was a very refreshing day.
There are beings known as angels, but I also think these children are angels themselves. In fact, I can’t think of any other reason why they could bring such happiness to me if not for being angels.
“Welcome back, Saint-sama.”
“I’ve returned.”
As my heart and body feel refreshed, I am welcomed by Lara, one of the nuns attending to me.
Even though I’ve repeatedly asked each new attendant to call me by my name, Hildegard, just like other church members, no one has done so. It makes me feel a bit lonely.
“Saint-sama, the gentleman who wishes to meet with you is waiting in the guest room today.”
“… Alright. As soon as I’m ready, I’ll head there. Please inform him.”
“Understood.”
After confirming that Lara listened to my instructions and left the room to carry them out, I slouched lazily on the provided sofa.
I may be called the Holy Maiden, but that title was given to me by others; I am just an ordinary human being. I get tired like anyone else, and when no one is watching I slouch on sofas just like this.
There are also people I dislike or find difficult to deal with, just like anyone else.
And now, the person Lara mentioned as having come to meet me is the last person I want to see, someone I dislike and find challenging to handle—Prevost de Douavre.
However, since he isn’t openly involved in any actions that violate the laws of the Holy Kingdom, I cannot outright reject his visit.
Besides, thanks to his generous donations to the church, I am able to provide food donations to the orphanage. This fact, too, adds to my sense of discomfort.
