ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“At last… I’m finally free from those hellish days.”
My name was Dalis, a Dark Elf and an officer in the Demon Lord’s army. Until just recently, I had been forced into hard labor—digging in a gold mine—because I had allegedly taught Ken-chan some “unsuitable language.”
Absolutely ridiculous. Even if she was the Demon Lord, locking someone up for months and making them do intense physical labor was way too harsh. All I did was teach Ken-chan a few questionable words! It was not like it caused any real harm. I was done with manual labor for good.
“And to think not only you gave me a ride on your back, but even invited me to the Dragonkin village. Are you sure it’s okay?”
I was clutching to the waist of Draco-san, a member of the Dragonkin who had been thrown into the same mine as I had, for the crime of roasting Ken-chan alive. We had naturally bonded during the long and brutal labor we endured together, and now she was kindly flying me back to her village as a bit of a detour before I returned home.
“Don’t worry about it. After all, we were comrades-in-arms back at that gold mine. Besides… The truth is, I’m a little scared to go back home. There’s a lot of complicated stuff going on with the Dragonkin.”
“They mentioned it in the meeting… Wasn’t it something about the males disappearing and everyone getting more aggressive?”
“Yeah. Just thinking about going back to writing up report after report gives me stomach cramps. Honestly, those mindless hours digging were a lot easier on me… I kinda want to get thrown back in there.”
“Is it really that bad? Dark Elves mostly work behind the scenes, so I’m not really familiar with the situation on the battlefield…”
“Then that’s perfect. Until we get to the village, I’ll tell you all about my blood, sweat, and tears. You’ll come to realize how much better off you really are.”
During a war with the Humanfolk…
“Draco-san! A report! The Human army has been completely annihilated. Our side only sustained six injuries—this was a total victory.”
“Thanks for the report. Well, obviously. There’s no way we’d ever lose to an inferior race like the Humans.”
This was a makeshift command post built out in the wastelands. Inside a temporary tent, I sat in front of a map-strewn table, calmly listening to my subordinate’s report.
“We still have plenty of strength to keep advancing. Should we proceed to the town?”
“Hmm. Taking advantage of the momentum and pushing forward is one option… But wait. If I remember right, the Demon Lord warned us not to go near that town because it’s equipped with a powerful weapon developed by the Humanfolk…”
The whole point of this battle was to repel the Human advance and push them back. Now that that was done, I didn’t want to risk unnecessary losses by invading recklessly. And more importantly, if I disobeyed and incurred the Demon Lord’s wrath, I’d be dead. That woman’s fury was no joke.
“Alright, leave a surveillance force behind and have the rest of the troops ret—”
“Draco-san! Urgent news!”
“What’s with the panic? It’s too early for a victory toast.”
“All of the Dragonkin troops have ignored orders and charged in on their own!”
“……What?”
“Hey!! Hand over the males already! Don’t you get it!? The Dragonkin males are extinct!!! Extincttttt!!! Grab a male and shove him in the magma, we’re starting the mating ritual NOWWW!!!”
“Huh!? ‘Forgive us because we have no males’!? Boo-hoo! Don’t whine!!! As long as there are males in this world, we’ll kill to take them!!!”
“Confiscate every mating magazine in this town!! Once you’re done, burn down the house it came from!!!”
“Look!! This is all your fault for not handing over the males when we asked!! You refused!! You chose this!! So this disaster is… YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!! Not ours!!”
“GYAAHAHAHAHA!!! GIVE US THE MALES!!!”
“Idiots, idiots, idiots! STOP!! STOP!!! I’M the one who’s going to get blamed for this!! I already have a mountain of incident reports stacked on my desk!! I’m begging you—retreat! RETREAT IMMEDIATELY!!”
Fortunately, the so-called “secret weapon” the Demon Lord had warned us about was nowhere to be seen. Still, the Dragonkin’s violent rampage that day wiped an entire town off the map. Needless to say, I was later severely scolded by the Demon Lord herself. Her yelling shook the walls of the room, and I was honestly on the verge of tears. Even though I was the one trying to stop them from rampaging…
“Hahh… The Dragonkin were always hot-headed and aggressive, but now that all the males are gone, they’ve completely gone off the rails. Lately they’ve even been going after other races just because they still have males.”
“Haha… That sounds rough.”
“Rough doesn’t even cover it! Screaming about ‘saving the males by wiping out the Humanfolk,’ they went on a full-blown rampage! They even started an unauthorized war during a suspension order… I’m telling you, they’re out of control. I was never cut out to be a clan chief…”
I was reluctantly doing my job as an officer in the Demon Lord’s army, but maybe I didn’t have it so bad after all. The Demon Lord mostly wanted access to the Dark Elves’ magic knowledge anyway, and didn’t push us to actively fight the war.
“Oh, there it is. That’s our village. Enough with the gloomy talk—let’s hit the 300°C hot springs!”
“Uh… Is there a civilian version of the hot spring? Preferably around 104°F?”
FWOOOSH!
With a bit of anxiety in my chest, we landed in the village’s central plaza.
“Ah, Draco-san, welcome back! That was quite a long sentence, huh?”
Swish, swish~
A Dragonkin woman with a ponytail emerged from a nearby building and greeted us. She was gently rubbing her suspiciously swollen belly with a strangely maternal smile.
“There were some… Complications. You all behaved yourselves, right? You didn’t go and wipe out another Human village or something, did you?”
“Hey! Don’t say that! We’d never do something so morally inappropriate! Honestly, Draco-san, you really need to take parenthood more seriously. Ken-chan is gonna scold you, you know?”
Swish, swish~ Swish, swish~
What is she even talking about? Wait, is she… Pregnant? But I heard there were no male Dragonkin left. And even if she did somehow get involved with Ken-chan, it’s way too soon for her belly to be that big…
Before Draco-san and I could even exchange glances, our eyes were locked in stunned confusion on her belly.
“Oh, this? Hehe… Curious, aren’t you?~♡ This is the fruit of Ken-chan’s love~♡ Come on, Yuu-chan, say hi to Draco-san! She’s a friend of your mommy and daddy~”
Swish, swish~ Swish, swish~
“Ah! Draco-san, would you like to rub my belly? I’m sure the little one will be thrilled!”
“O-okay…”
Draco-san awkwardly forced a smile and cautiously reached out to touch her belly.
Swish, swish~ Swish, swish~
“The doctor says I’m due in a month. It’s a boy, apparently. If he takes after his daddy, he’s going to be so cute~♡ I just can’t wait♡”
Swish, swish~ Swish, swish~ SLIP!
Roll roll roll roll…
“………………”
A ball rolled out of her belly and slowly bumped against my foot.
“Excuse me. Give back Yuu-chan… Give him back.”
“Uh…”
“I SAID GIVE HIM BACK!!!”
“Y-yes, ma’am!!”
Her dead-eyed glare froze me solid. I frantically picked up the ball at my feet and handed it to her.
What is WRONG with this person!?
“Thank you… So, I don’t believe I’ve seen your friend before. Is she a guest?”
“Y-yeah. This is Dalis the Dark Elf. She’ll be staying here for a while, so treat her kindly.”
“I see! Then you came at just the right time. Our village has seen a boost in the economy lately, and we’ve got all sorts of handy items to support daily life! For example… how about this?”
With a confident smile, she handed me a long, colorful tube-shaped object.
“What’s this…?”
“A rattle!”
“A… rattle?”
“You’ve never heard of it? When you shake it near your belly like this…”
Clatter clatter clatter…
“Oh! Did you hear that? He kicked just now! Little pop-pop kicks! Aww, Yuu-chan just can’t wait to meet his papa~ I can’t wait either~”
This is terrifying!! No, seriously, that was just a ball, right? That’s not, like, a Dragonkin egg or something… right!?
“When I get home, I’ll make Ken-chan dinner, and we’ll take a nice soak in the magma bath together~♡ He’s so fragile—he could die from the smallest accident, so I’ll have to watch him closely… Fufu♡ Ken-chan♡ Ken-chan♡ Ken-chan♡ Ken-chan♡ Ken-chan♡”
Nope nope nope too scary!!! Why is the first villager already this incredulously crazy!? I am not optimistic about what comes next!
“Well, if I think about it logically, at least she’s not starting wars. That alone is a huge plus! Alright, time for the hot springs! I’m heading to the Dragonkin-exclusive bath. Catch you later!”
“Wait—hold on! Don’t leave me alone in this psycho zone!! You’re just going to ignore everything that just happened!? DRACO-SAN!!!”
After that, I spent three days in a village full of pregnant (delusional) and child-rearing (doll-toting) Dragonkin.
At the souvenir shop, I found childcare goods like “heat-retaining blankets” and “adult baby starter kits,” and despite myself, I bought some thinking, “Well… This could come in handy one day,” which annoyed me more than anything.
