“I understand your grief. Since the symptoms were unknown, we considered the possibility of some kind of change occurring immediately after death, and performed the autopsy without prior explanation. It was a necessary measure to help save children who may suffer the same condition in the future. I hope you can understand…”

“Don’t give me that! Whatever your reasons, he was… He was our only son! And now we can’t even call his name one last time, or hold his hand before saying goodbye!?”

Driven by anger and sorrow, the grieving parent grabbed me by the collar. Their eyes brimmed with tears.

“Don’t think you can get away with anything just because you’re a doctor!”

After the patient was declared dead, I had been contacting all relevant departments to report the death and prepare for the autopsy. Then suddenly, a nurse came rushing in, blurting out something utterly unbelievable as her first words.

“Did you actually check the room? You’re not confusing the patient’s room or making some rookie mistake, are you!?”

“Yes, I checked it several times. But there’s just… Nothing. Not even a trace…”

“Then what happened to the nurse on duty!? I told you someone should be watching him at all times!”

“Th-That’s the thing… I’m not sure how to explain it…”

She seemed unsure of how to phrase it. Her brow furrowed and she cast her eyes downward in confusion.

“We don’t have time for this! Just spit it out! What happened!?”

“…Yes. According to the nurse’s testimony, the patient suddenly began to emit a bright light and then… Vanished without a trace.”

“…Are you kidding me? Do you think I’m some kind of fool? I’m sure you find my panic amusing in a situation like this.”

“N-No! That’s not it! I don’t believe it myself! But… Saitō-san is very serious and sincere, and it just doesn’t seem like she’s lying…”

Haah… This probably comes down to some stupid blunder, and now they’re trying to hide the body to cover it up. These younger staff… You never know what they’re capable of. At this rate, I’ll end up taking full responsibility as the attending physician! I absolutely have to avoid that!

“Summon Saitō to the interview room immediately! And have everyone else who’s free search every corner of this hospital! That patient was an extremely valuable sample. If word gets out that we lost him due to negligence… This hospital’s reputation will be ruined!”

“Y-Yes, sir!”

Pressed by my shouting, the nurse turned and hurriedly left the room, clearly shaken.

“In the meantime, I need to buy myself some time…”

As I was frantically trying to think of a way out of this mess, the work phone hidden in my breast pocket started blaring loudly. To make matters worse, the screen displayed the name of the newly appointed hospital director. This new director was a transfer from overseas. 

“Yes. This is Tsukahara speaking. I’m sorry, but I’m very busy right now. I’ll return your call lat—… What? H-How do you already know the patient’s body disappeared!?”

I had just emailed earlier to report the patient’s death. I hadn’t provided any further details yet. Where could that information have leaked from…? No— even if it had leaked, this was too fast.

“…Huh? ‘We’ll handle it on our end, so don’t worry’? That’s absurd! The patient’s condition worsened under your direction, and we couldn’t even collect proper data!”

I didn’t know the exact reason, but ever since the initial examination, the director had been oddly obsessed with this patient. It might be natural to take interest in a previously unknown illness, but even so, her fixation was abnormal for a hospital director. Especially now that the body had disappeared.  Did that patient have something special about him?

“Kento Aizawa’s parents are here to see you… What should we do?”

“Tell them I can’t meet today! And whatever you do, don’t mention that he’s passed away! I’ll come up with a solution by tomorrow…”
