The shrill cry, far too loud to be called a bird’s chirp, echoed through the room and woke me up.

“Fwaaah… Is it morning already?”

Rubbing my sleepy eyes, I gazed blankly at the soft light streaming through the window… I should probably get up soon.

“Ugh, as heavy as ever, Maru-chan-san… Alright, up we go.”

Carefully sliding my body out so as not to wake Maru-chan-san, who had been sleeping pressed right up against me, I slowly eased myself free.

“If only you were a little lighter… Ugh, my back kinda hurts.”

Grumbling like that, I stretched my back with a big yawn. Reluctantly, I brushed off the fur stuck to my clothes, still feeling the lingering warmth and soft fuzz. Today was a good morning, just like usual.

“Oh, good morning, everyone.”

Just as I was heading toward Luna-san’s bed to greet her, the animals in the room all rushed over to me. There were over 20 of them, and even then, it wasn’t all the animals in the room. It was pretty surprising how many animals this room held.

“Yes, yes, calm down. I’ll give you all your pats today too.”

A quarrel almost broke out the moment they gathered, so I clapped my hands to get their attention.

“Okay, here we go~”

Starting with the one closest to me, I gently began petting them in order.

“Nya-nya~ nyanya-nya? (nuzzle…)”

Even as I did, many of them tried to cut the line or pressed their bodies against my back and legs. They jostled and pushed, eager to be first. But if I reacted to every single one of them, there’d be no end to it—so I silently continued petting in order.

This one, about the same size as me, was a bird… I think this bird’s name was Pippi-san?

I slipped my hand under her wing, gently massaging the hidden flesh while brushing off dirt and debris. Unlike Maru-chan-san’s soft, squishy feel, Pippi-san had dense muscles, and the firm, springy sensation was clearly felt through my fingers.

I had just been thinking it was time to pet Gon-san, so I went ahead and scratched the area around her belly.

Lately, I’d started to learn what spots each one liked to be petted. For example, Gon-san would kick her feet and let out a pleased noise if I gently rubbed the inside of her ears when she let her guard down.

And to finish up, I would slowly stroke from the base of her long fox muzzle down to her neck with my fingertips. As always, she would narrow her eyes in bliss and freeze up, and that would be the end of Gon-san’s turn. Then, I’d do the same for the next animal, petting them all until they were satisfied.

“Haa… Somehow, I’ve really gotten used to this life.”

As I absentmindedly petted the animals, I caught myself reflecting on  my life. How many days had it been since I came to this world? I used to count them at first, but after I passed the 30-day mark, I gave up on counting. Things were still confusing as ever, but… I wondered if I was actually being useful to the people of this world.

Right now, the only ones who seemed to need me were these innocent animals pressing up against me like this.
