ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“I’m so busy… I want to go to Ken-chan Zoo!”
My muttering, not meant for anyone in particular, echoed in the quiet study. Good grief… I had thought I could finally breathe easy now that the construction of Ken-chan Zoo was complete, but instead, work kept flooding in one after another, enough to drive me mad.
“Let’s see, next is… Tch, another marriage petition letter. Didn’t we already say we’ll contact the relevant species later?”
And recently, what troubled me most was this. Ever since Ken-chan had been granted permission to mate, letters proposing marriage or mating poured in endlessly.
“Dear Demon Lord,
From the very first moment I laid eyes upon Ken-chan, I was struck with a revelation like lightning: ‘Ah, this child is a holy beast sent from heaven for the sole purpose of mating with me…’ Furthermore, just the other day at Ken-chan Zoo, when our gazes intertwined for the briefest instant, I perceived that Ken-chan too was ready to accept me.
Therefore, I humbly request that you allow me even one taste—no, even just one childbirth—with Ken-chan. Please grant me this wish. On another note, there is currently fervent debate in my domain over raising our contributions to the Demon Lord’s Army tenfold. I cannot say what, but if you allow me to mate with Ken-chan…”
Riiip!
It became too ridiculous to keep reading, so I tore the letter apart in irritation. They even went so far as to enclose nude photographs—no clue who would want to see them—along with mawkish writing, making it unbearable to look at.
“And that one was from a noble, no less. Which means I’ll have to take great care even in refusing her… Honestly, calling this a nuisance doesn’t even begin to cover it!”
To rein in such excesses, I had set conditions for which species could mate with Ken-chan.
Specifically, it was written clearly in the Demon Newspaper: “Only species with five or fewer birth-capable females may mate.”
…But that in itself became the trigger for an unforeseen disaster.
In order to meet that condition, species across the Demon Realm began slaughtering each other… Indeed. They actually began slaughtering each other for real. Friends who had laughed together just the day before, even family, turned into targets of killing. Love and friendship proved utterly powerless before lust.
The catastrophe that swept the Demon Realm was so severe, it made the recent battle royale held at Luna’s castle seem almost heartwarming in comparison. The realm was driven to the brink of collapse. When even the usually empty hospitals overflowed with the injured, I hastily corrected the condition to “species numbers as of last month,” and only then did the situation calm down. But those few days had been hell on my stomach.
I could no longer understand the minds of the Demon Realm’s inhabitants.
Why do they always resort to killing so quickly…? Do they lack the very concept of common sense?
“Haah… I can’t take this anymore!”
I couldn’t help but think that as I flipped through the pile of letters stacked before me.
“Still, the sheer quantity of these letters is far too much… Perhaps I should leave the business of arranging fiancées to Luna and the others. I’m already swamped preparing for the meeting with the humans.”
Unfortunately, the meeting with the humans—long considered a dangerous prospect—was now just a week away. Having revealed Ken-chan’s existence on such a large and public scale, there was no longer any room to feign ignorance.
At least I had prepared recordings to emphasize just how much Ken-chan loved demons, as well as a carefully crafted scenario I had devised after long deliberation: “We’re merely protecting him—using him as a stud is just part of that! By mating every day, we can protect him in a humane way!”
Even from an objective standpoint, our argument had more validity… But…
“If asked whether they could overlook such a precious male, the answer would be ‘No.’”
There was no such option as giving up a male. They would surely try to take Ken-chan back, no matter how difficult it would be.
“Depending on negotiations, there may even come a point where we must hand over Ken-chan…”
A shiver ran down my spine at the thought of such a worst-case scenario. If offering Ken-chan to the humans came with the promise that they would continue to loan males for years to come, then as Demon Lord, it would be the rational choice to agree.
In the long run, that would better ensure the survival of the demon race. And given past tendencies, there was little chance they would break such an agreement for fear of retaliation.
But still…
===================
“(Mao-chan! Good girl, good girl~)”
Pat, pat…
“(Up close… Those horns look really impressive. How do they work?)”
Stroke, stroke…
===================
But still, I personally did not want to let go of Ken-chan! If I could be allowed to speak my true feelings, I didn’t even want to display him in such a tasteless way in that facility. I wanted him right by my side, whispering words of love!
We didn’t even need to mate. Just having him gently pat my head at the end of a long day with a “You worked hard” would be the greatest joy. Every time I thought of his presence, my heart fluttered so much I nearly forgot my position as Demon Lord.
“This makes me unworthy of being Demon Lord…”
By now, I could no longer live without Ken-chan. Not because he was male, but simply because I could not bear to let him go.
“Hmph… Perhaps a day will come when I must choose between Ken-chan or the Demon Realm.”
That was how alluring Ken-chan was… And precisely because of that…To avoid such a ruinous future, I, who reigned at the peak of the Demon Realm, had to fulfill my duty!
Rustle!
Bolstering my resolve, I reached for the mountain of paperwork that made me dizzy just to look at.
“Increase in punishments for those who harm Ken-chan… Approved.”
Stamp!
“Construction of new solitary cells…Approved.”
Stamp!
“Reduction of sentences in cases of violence and assault, as well as lighter penalties for any violent acts related to Ken-chan…Approved.”
Stamp!
Stamp, stamp, stamp!
Stamp, stamp, stamp, stamp, stamp!
“Hm… This letter…”
As I pressed on with my work, Ken-chan’s smile in my mind, a letter bearing the words ‘From Kushina’ peeked out from the pile.
“A letter from that facility—it has been a while. Hopefully, at least, it isn’t bad news…”
Rustle…
Deep down, I prayed that no further trouble would come as I carefully opened the seal.
“This is quite a reckless demand… But depending on how I look at it, it could also be an opportunity. If it restores his mental state, Ken-chan’s burden will be greatly reduced.”
Good news, yes, but still troublesome. Even so, if it would ultimately benefit Ken-chan… Then there was no way I could refuse!
“If I double my efforts, I can manage. It’s fine… It’s only my fourth all-nighter. Approved.”
I pressed my seal onto the request written in the letter.
“H-heh… I’ve gone and approved it…”
Despite my busy state, I had stamped my seal. It meant I was now certain to lose more sleep, and yet, for some reason, a smile naturally spread across my face.
For Ken-chan’s sake, any exhaustion or hardship was worth it—I affirmed that to myself and faced forward again. The next time I saw Ken-chan, perhaps I would have him pat me gently on the head again.
“Alright then… Since she’s irritating,I will go ahead and double Aura’s sentence. Approved.”
