ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Tch, why isn’t he answering his phone!?”
Alone in her luxury penthouse apartment, Mia Naruse shouted in frustration while lounging on her couch.
She had been calling Hamura over and over, trying to push some tedious tasks onto him, but the calls wouldn’t go through. Even when she tried messaging him, the read receipt never appeared. The night before, Hamura had blocked Naruse on all communication platforms to sever ties with her. No matter how many times she called or texted, there was no way she could reach him.
“Hah? What the hell is his problem? Who does he think he is? Ugh, so annoying!”
Left with no other choice, Naruse took a taxi to Hamura’s apartment. Standing in front of the shabby complex, she pressed the intercom for his unit on the second floor.
No response.
The time was 6:30 PM. Hamura was undergoing surgery to have his prosthetic arm attached, but Naruse, completely unaware of this, assumed he was deliberately ignoring her. She started pounding on the door.
“Hey! I know you’re in there! What, are you serious about yesterday? You really think you can do anything on your own without me!? Huh!? There are tons of Supporters who would love to work with me! But what about you!? You think there’s a single Seeker out there who actually wants to team up with you!? Huh!?”
Of course, there was no answer. Naruse gave the door one last kick before storming back to the taxi.
“Take me to Fenrir’s headquarters.”
She snorted in irritation as she gave the order. There were two reasons Naruse didn’t want to hire a new Supporter. The first was her personal attachment to Hamura. The second was that she found it a hassle to break in a new Supporter through her so-called “slave training.”
Hamura was already fully trained to handle all of her menial tasks. He edited her videos without needing to be told, bought whatever she wanted in advance, and worked for dirt-cheap wages. Most of the profits from labyrinth expeditions ended up in Naruse’s hands. The hierarchy between them had been firmly established. If she hired someone new, she’d have to start training them from scratch and that was just too much trouble for her.
It wasn’t that she valued Hamura’s skills as a Supporter. She only wanted him as a convenient lackey, someone to handle all the grunt work. Upon arriving at Fenrir’s headquarters, Naruse immediately asked the receptionist about Hamura’s whereabouts.
“What!? That bastard quit the guild too!?”
“Yes. But more importantly, Naruse-san! There’s a huge problem! The Guild Master has gone missing—”
Naruse couldn’t care less about Iizuka’s disappearance. The only thing on her mind was Hamura.
What is he thinking?! He can’t do anything on his own! I was sure he would try to find a new Seeker within Fenrir, but he even quit the guild?
If Hamura had tried to find a new Seeker within Fenrir, Naruse would have absolutely interfered. But if he had joined a different guild, her influence wouldn’t reach him.
“Hah… Haha! Fine, bring it on…!”
Naruse seethed with growing fury toward Hamura.
“He’s bound to run out of money and come crawling back soon enough. I just have to hold out until then. No problem, no problem… And when he does, I’ll wring him dry even more than before. I will squeeze him dry to the point he doesn’t even have the strength to resist.”
“Um, Naruse-san! Master Iizuka is—”
“Missing, right? The rescue team will handle it.”
Even if he dies, I’ll just take over as Master of this guild.
She kept that thought to herself.
“More importantly, I need a new Supporter. Find me someone suitable. Money isn’t an issue. Thanks to video revenue, my wallet’s pretty full these days.”
Most of the ad revenue from the videos went straight into Naruse’s pocket. She had plenty of money. Wealth, skill, youth, and beauty—a perfect existence. That was how Naruse saw herself. Her pride was as high as her self-evaluation. Not once did she consider that Hamura’s departure was her fault. In her mind, this was just another case of him acting out. The fact that she had worked him to the bone and paid him next to nothing didn’t even register in her mind. Apologizing to him wasn’t even a remote possibility. She genuinely believed she had been helping him, and the idea that the reality was the complete opposite was something she simply couldn’t accept.
It was precisely because of this unshakable pride that her downfall began.
“Well, anyone off the street would be more competent than that idiot.”
“U-Understood. I’ll put together a list of potential Supporters.”
Naruse left the guild headquarters and took a taxi back to her luxury apartment.
As she sat in the taxi, she gazed out the window.
That’s right. A Seeker can dive into the labyrinth alone. Recording a solo dungeon run might not be a bad idea. Solo runs are popular, and maybe… No, my video will definitely rack up more than a million views. Maybe even two million. If the video really takes off, it could even hit ten million! And when that happens, that idiot will regret everything. This is a great chance. I should go deeper than ever before… I can reach the high floors solo and show him just how capable I am…!
Lost in her own fantasy, Naruse let out a small laugh.
