Chapter 14: The Power to Exterminate

62nd Floor.

By 21:00, we had arrived at our target floor.

“At 24:00, the labyrinth’s reconstruction will begin. Even I don’t know what’ll happen If we get caught in that.”

Labyrinth reconstruction, simply put, was a massive overhaul OF THE LABYRINTH. The ceiling could collapse and block pathways, the entire structure could flip upside down, new paths could form through the walls, and pitfalls or other traps could suddenly appear… I’d heard that being inside during the process felt like getting caught in a natural disaster.

Even for an S-rank Seeker, surviving the labyrinth’s reconstruction was entirely up to luck.

“Three hours left. We need to find Kisaragi and get her out by then.”

“This floor hasn’t been mapped and there’s a high chance of it containing a forsaken realm. Searching and escaping could take considerable time. Three hours isn’t nearly enough to search safely. So, I have a suggestion… Why don’t we split up and search?”

Is this girl insane?

“Wait. You’re seriously suggesting I go off alone as a supporter?”

“I am. Right now, we have paths ahead and behind us. If we move 【Scout Bee】 alone, the bee will just get crushed by monsters. That means we have no choice but to split up and search for Kisaragi in person. If it’s you, I’m sure you should be able to stall them or escape safely even if you run into a tough opponent, right?”

“That’s—! You’re overestimating me! I’m not—”

Abisu’s slender fingers pressed against my lips.

“Believe in yourself. You’re not as weak as you think you are.”

“I am weak. I—”

“Can’t you trust the words of an S-rank Seeker?”

Abisu’s clear, unwavering eyes locked onto mine.

“…Ahh, fine! I get it already! I just have to listen to my Guild Master, right?!”

“That’s the spirit. Well then, time to part ways. Bye-bye~”

Despite my dissatisfaction, I split up with Abisu and ran through the cavern alone. I brushed my fingers over my lips where Abisu had touched them. Her finger felt cool and smooth. The sensation of her finger was still lingering on my mouth. 

Wait, what the hell am I thinking at a time like this?! Focus! Focus! There’s no Seeker with me right now!

“Kisaragi… Please be safe…!”

As I ran, four bats wreathed in flames rushed at me head-on.

Flame Bats. If you made contact with them, the flames on their bodies would burn me to ashes. I had to be careful. I slid under their attack, positioning myself behind them.

“Just as I thought…”

That movement confirmed it. My physical abilities had been enhanced.

What the hell is going on? It’s not on the level of an OOPArt’s enhancement, but my body’s performance has definitely improved beyond reason.

“Kyakyaa!!”

The Flame Bats flipped their bodies mid-air and came at me again. They were fast, making it difficult to outrun them. My only options were to defeat or restrain them.

I could stop them with the three-syllable spell 【Eightfold Bind】, but that required grabbing the target first. Against Flame Bats, which were constantly enveloped in fire, that spell was useless… Or so it should have been. But right now, I had a metal arm with me. Grabbing them shouldn’t be an issue for me if it was just for a split second. 

“Kyakyaa!!!”

As the Flame Bats rushed toward me, I reached out with my right prosthetic arm and grabbed the leading one. And then, squish. My right hand easily crushed the Flame Bat.

“Huh?”

What the hell? That shouldn’t be possible… It was a monster. This prosthetic arm wasn’t even an OOPArt, so how in the world was I able to deal actual damage on it so easily like that? 

“Well, whatever.”

I decided to test it out on the remaining three Flame Bats. A hand thrust pierced straight through a Flame Bat. A punch sent another flying. A hand chop slammed the last one down.

All of them… Defeated in a single hit.

“What… Is this right arm…?”

It enhanced my physical abilities and had a special effect against monsters. This didn’t make any sense. For some reason, this arm had the same kind of power as an OOPArt. I had no idea why this arm possessed such power, but for now, I just had to recognize that somehow this prosthetic arm had the power to exterminate monsters. 

Questions and excitement could wait. Right now, I had to focus on rescuing Kisaragi. I activated 【Insight】 and countless footprints surfaced. Among them, I focused on one set of footprints. It was Iizuka’s footprints. During their earlier altercation, I had made sure to observe Iizuka’s feet and shoes. The size of those shoes and the design of the soles, these footprints matched them exactly. The trail ended abruptly before me. Most likely, this was where Iizuka had used a transfer crystal. If I followed these footprints, I would reach the place where Iizuka and Kisaragi had encountered the Red-Eyed Minotaur.

By tracking the footprints, I soon found another set—massive, bare footprints. Alongside them were Iizuka’s and smaller ones… Probably Kisaragi’s. Footprints from all three were scattered about.

Three paths lay ahead. In one of them, the massive footprints that belonged to the Minotaur’s continued. Kisaragi’s footprints ended here. There were no signs of her running away. Had she been eaten or taken away by the Minotaur…?

A Supporter always planned for the worst. I imagined every possible disastrous outcome and steeled myself. Even if that thing was munching on Kisaragi right now, or worse—violating her—I couldn’t afford to panic. Losing my composure would mean the end.

I contacted Abisu and shared my location with her and then, I continued tracking down the Minotaur’s footprints. There was no time to waste. I couldn’t afford to wait around for Abisu. This floor wasn’t mapped yet and the paths were complicated too. Abisu would struggle to reach me, but sitting idly by while waiting wasn’t an option either. 

At the very least, before meeting up with Abisu, I had to pinpoint the Minotaur’s exact location first. I followed the tracks for 150 meters and… There it was.
