Chapter 50: Side Story – Let’s Do Something Fun
Deserted Island Life: Day ???
On a day when the storm continued, I was out gathering food with Riko. Since it was just the two of us for a change, we were walking around the island, looking for something edible—when we were suddenly hit by a storm.
We found a nearby underground cave and took shelter.
“This island seems to have a lot of caves, doesn’t it?” Riko said with a laugh as she gazed outside.
Just as she said, it seems this uninhabited island has underground caves scattered all over. If we went in too deep, we might never find our way out.
“But right now, it’s the storm. We can’t go outside for a while like this,” I said.
“We’ll just have to wait until it stops,” Riko replied.
“Yeah, we should stay put in the cave until then—”
“Y-you’re not planning to…attack me just because we’re alone together, right!?” Riko suddenly exclaimed.
“Let’s just sleep,” I responded.
“Huh?”
Riko gave me a deadpan look. Even I know when to behave, considering the time and place.
As I leaned against the rock, relaxing, Riko moved closer to me.
“Y-you’re too close,” I muttered.
“Come on! In this situation, it wouldn’t be weird if the mood got more…you know…romantic, right!?” she said, flustered.
“What are you expecting?”
“W-well, I mean…umm…”
Riko’s face turned red, something rare for her. Her eyes darted around. —No, I understood, but I didn’t think Riko would want that.
She’s flashier than Kitakami, petite, and has her own charm. And what I like the most is her healthy, well-toned arms and legs.
If I started dating Riko, every day would be anything but boring.
“Sorry. But really, what do you even see in me? I’m honestly curious.”
“What do I see? Well, everything, I guess. You’re decisive, you help us out, you always find food, and you even manage to keep all the girls together. I think that’s pretty amazing. Most people couldn’t do that.”
“R-really?”
For some reason, her words made me feel oddly embarrassed. As I scratched my cheek, Riko wrapped her arms around me.
…Is this for real?
It felt different compared to the other girls.
It was refreshing, somehow.
I’ve had close moments with Amane and Kitakami before. Each of them had their own unique feel. But Riko had this soft, comforting feeling like a pillow you’d never want to let go of.
I was both surprised and moved by this.
“Tetsu-kun, let’s do something…fun, okay?”
She looked up at me with those big eyes, and just that was enough to stir something deep inside me. …T-there’s no way I could resist. If a guy gets that look, he’d be done for in seconds.
At least, I was already hooked.
“…Riko.”
“Yeah. Be gentle when you touch me.”
I touched her, and even the smallest caress made her twitch. It was adorable. …Ah, all my reason and self-control had just gone out the window.
“This is all your fault, Riko.”
“Yep, I don’t mind taking the blame. So let’s keep going just like this.”
“…Got it.”
—I forgot all about the storm and spent a fun time with Riko.
* * *
“…I-I’m at my limit.”
“Eh~? Riko can still keep going, though?”
…I was completely drained, but Riko still wasn’t satisfied. I never thought her desire would be this intense…
“Stop. This is as far as we go.”
“Eh~…But I can still keep going.”
“Look, the storm’s clearing up outside.”
“…Oh, you’re right.”
Outside the cave, the sky had turned blue. The storm had passed. If we kept going, Amane or Kitakami might find us.
We fixed our messy clothes.
“…Phew. Riko, you’re way too bold. You seemed like you knew what you were doing.”
“It was my first time, though.”
“No way!? You were really good at it!”
“That’s because I’ve watched a lot of…adult videos.”
“Is that so!?”
“Girls watch that kind of stuff too, you know.”
I guess that’s how it is. I didn’t know that.
Does that mean Amane and the others also…?
“Anyway, thanks. That was a really special experience.”
“Yeah, but it’s our little secret. Just between the two of us.”
“Of course. There’s no way I’d tell anyone about this.”
After tidying ourselves up, we stepped out of the cave. The weather was back to normal, and the sun shone brightly. Now that I think of it, the beach should be nearby.
“Tetsu-kun, are we heading out?”
“Yeah, let’s get going. There might be some treasure washed up on the beach from the storm.”
“Do you think something might have drifted ashore?”
“Exactly. Let’s go check it out.”
“Okay!”
We dashed out of the cave and headed toward the beach. It was a bit of a walk, but eventually, we arrived. As expected, debris from the storm was scattered around. Among this trash, there must be something useful.
We started walking along the beach.
As usual, plastic bottles, Styrofoam, and other garbage were washed ashore. I collected any containers that might be usable.
“Hmm…I wonder if there’s anything useful.”
“Hey, Tetsu-kun! Could we use this?”
It seemed Riko had picked something up.
When I checked what it was—

Chapter 51: The New Survivor and Chocolate
“Hmm…?”
“What’s wrong, Hayasaka?”
“I don’t know. It felt like something moved.”
“Really!? Does that mean someone is here?”
“I’m not sure. We’ll have to check inside to know.”
Come to think of it, why didn’t Ooi and the others use this bunker instead of just setting up tents? Or maybe they had their reasons.
“Let’s go inside.”
Kitakami calmly moved forward. As usual, she didn’t show any fear. Does she not feel scared at all?
We found an entrance around the back.
The rain clouds made it hard to see.
I pulled a flashlight out of my bag and switched it on. It was the one John Smith had dropped. The battery still had power and was working just fine.
I shined the light down the corridor and headed in.
The bunker smelled musty, and moss had taken over the ground and walls. It had been left to rot for a long time, almost like a ruin.
“Maybe they chose to camp in tents because they couldn’t stand the smell in here.”
“Looks like it. This is pretty rough.”
Even Amane seemed uncomfortable.
But outside, there was a storm…We didn’t have any other option but to stay here.
—Now, about the back…
From behind something, there was a faint noise—something moved.
A small animal?
No, it wasn’t. It was a person!
“Don’t come any closer!”
A girl warned us, pointing a knife at us.
Her uniform…it’s the same as ours.
So, there was another survivor.
“Calm down. We’re from the same group.”
“…Is that so? Wait, Kizuna…”
Kizuna?
Who is that—oh, right. She’s talking about Kitakami. I had forgotten that was her name. It’s such a cute name.
“Kaede Kotobuki, it’s a relief to see you alive,” Kitakami said.
“Kizuna, what is going on?! Why did the ship sink? And what is this island?”
Kitakami explained the situation to Kaede. She looked shocked, but at least she lowered her weapon.
“So that’s what happened…We failed to escape.”
“What…that’s awful. But at least I’m not alone anymore…I was all by myself for so long…”
As Kaede started crying, Kitakami comforted her. Huh, I didn’t know Kitakami had this gentle side.
“Hey, Hayasaka-kun,” Amane whispered to me.
“What is it, Amane?”
“Do you think that girl has been here this whole time?”
“I doubt it. It’s probably since Ooi and the others left and joined us. The timing fits.”
“Yeah, that makes sense. So, we just missed her?”
That’s probably what happened.
Still, I can’t believe there’s another survivor. I should be happy, but…why is it another girl?
So far, we haven’t found any other guys. Well, Kurashima was here, but he was one of the main people behind this whole incident, so he doesn’t count.
After things calmed down a bit, I approached Kaede.
“Can I talk to you for a second, Kotobuki-san?”
“W-What? And who are you?”
“Oh, right. I’m Hayasaka. Hayasaka Kei. Nice to meet you.”
“Hayasaka-kun, huh. I’m Kaede Kotobuki. Kizuna and I are airsoft buddies.”
So that’s it. They’re close enough to call each other by name. I guess Kitakami has friends. Of course, she would. The sad thing is, I’m the only one without any.
“So, what have you been doing up until now?”
“Ever since I washed up on this island, I’ve been wandering around. But I didn’t run into anyone…then I found this place. It smelled awful, but I just dealt with it and used it as my bed.”
“What about water and food?”
“I’ve been surviving on rainwater. It’s almost gone now…And I’ve been eating grass. Kizuna taught me what’s safe to eat.”
Oh yeah, Kitakami knew a lot about edible plants. She must’ve taught Kaede too.
“Well, I’m glad you’re okay, but because of this storm, we’ll have to stay in the bunker for a while.”
“Is there no way to escape, Kizuna?”
“It’s impossible. The ship already left…I’m not even sure if they made it out safely.”
That’s true. We entrusted it to Yaegashi, but whether they managed to sail away from the island or not…
Worst case, they could have capsized. I don’t even want to think about it.
“I see…By the way, is there anything to eat? I’m starving…”
Kaede’s stomach growled loudly.
Yeah, I’m hungry too.
Even though Amane and Kitakami weren’t saying anything, they probably felt the same. This is perfect timing.
“I’ve got some chocolate in my school bag. It’s rare, but I think now’s the right time to eat it.”
“Ch-Chocolate! You really have something like that!?”
Kaede’s eyes lit up, and she looked like she was about to jump on me.
Honestly, I had debated whether we should eat it or not. It’s a precious treat, after all.
But with this big storm, we don’t know what will happen. We need to build up our strength now, or we’ll regret it if something does happen later.
I broke the chocolate bar into four pieces.
I handed them out to everyone.
“Enjoy it slowly, Amane.”
“Thanks, Hayasaka-kun. I love chocolate!”
Amane’s happy smile was so cute. I felt my heart melt a little…Too adorable.
“What about me?”
“Of course, Kitakami-san. You need to stay strong.”
“Thank you. By the way, I love chocolate too.”
Kitakami’s smile wasn’t so much a smile as it was a crazed look, like some kind of killer clown—why is she glaring at me like that!? Her stare is terrifying, please stop.
Lastly, I gave some to Kaede.
“Thanks, Hayasaka-kun.”
“Yeah. I’ve got drinks too if you need any.”
“That’s amazing. Where did you get all this?”
“Some of it washed up on shore, and some of it we gathered from the island.”
“Wow, real survival stuff. That’s incredible.”
“We have to do it to stay alive.”
I put a piece of chocolate in my mouth.
The sweet, rich flavor spread through my mouth, and after going without sugar for so long, it felt like my brain was short-circuiting.
Wow…it’s so good.
Amane, Kitakami, and Kaede were all moved by the taste of the chocolate. Something so ordinary felt so luxurious now.
