Chapter 19: That Senpai Was Kind of Mysterious (Shizuku’s POV)

After that, some time passed. When I said that I had finished gathering my things and that I would be heading home soon, Senpai told me, “I’ll walk you to the station.” And then he actually walked with me all the way there.

“Alright then, Senpai, thank you so much for today!”

“Yeah. Get home safe.”

“Yes! Well then, excuse me!”

With that, I said my farewell to Senpai and entered the ticket gate at the station. Then I sat on a bench on the platform and waited for the train.

“Hehe, even so, today really was such a fun day…”

When I found the abandoned kitten on the side of the road on my way home from school, I had felt so sad, but thanks to Kuze-senpai, the kitten had been saved, and I was really glad about that. And I was happy that she was given such a lovely name, Mii-chan. But I never expected that I would get to talk with that Kuze-senpai, or go to the animal hospital together, or even follow him all the way to his apartment. I never thought a day would come when we would spend so much time together.

“And I definitely didn’t expect that Kuze-senpai would walk me all the way to the station… And he was so kind to Mii-chan too… Hmm, could those rumors really have been true…?”

I tilted my head slightly and murmured. The truth was, Kuze-senpai had a lot of bad rumors about him. Things like bullying underclassmen and taking their money, or secretly drinking alcohol and smoking, or partying all night, or constantly hitting on girls and fooling around… There were so many rumors like that. That was why my friends told me I shouldn’t get close to Kuze-senpai. Even Kakeru-senpai, whom I trusted the most, had warned me, “There’s a dangerous guy named Kuze at this school, so be careful.”

Because of that, I tried not to go to the second-years’ hallway so I wouldn’t run into Kuze-senpai. There were days when I wanted to talk with Kakeru-senpai during break, but I held myself back and avoided the second-years’ classrooms. With that history, I had never met Kuze-senpai even once until now. But when I accidentally ran into him after school today, I was so scared that my face went pale. My legs even gave out…

And since I was an underclassman too, I worried that maybe he would shake me down for money. I was honestly terrified inside… But Kuze-senpai didn’t try to extort me or do anything bad. Instead, he genuinely understood my desire to help Mii-chan, and he immediately brought her to the animal hospital. He had been a really dependable and cool Senpai. And when it came to the examination fee at the animal hospital, I told him I would pay my share, but Senpai…

“The examination fee is fine, Sakurajima. You don’t have to pay. I’ve been working part-time for a while, so I’ve got money saved up. Don’t worry about it.”

“Eh, b-but… I’m the one who found the kitten, so for you to pay everything… Th-that feels too shameless of me…”

“Don’t worry about that. But if you’re that concerned…Hmm. Oh, I know. In that case, could you buy this little one some toys for me instead?”

“Eh? Toys…For the kitten?”

“Yeah. She’s still a baby and probably wants to play a lot. So use your sense and pick out something she’d enjoy. If the gift comes from you, I’m sure this kitten will be happy. So please, buy her some toys in my place.”

“S-Senpai… yy-yes! I understand! Then I’ll buy her some toys she can enjoy!”

“Yeah. I’m counting on you.”

That was the conversation we had on our way to the animal hospital. I knew the examination fee at an animal hospital was a bit pricey, so I said I would pay my part, but Senpai smoothly refused. And not only that. He even suggested that I buy toys for Mii-chan instead. Toys were much cheaper than the examination fee for sure. I was sure Senpai understood that I wanted to do something for Mii-chan, and he took my financial situation into account when he made that suggestion.

“To make such a thoughtful suggestion so smoothly… Kuze-senpai really is a kind person…”

Well, of course, it wasn’t like I heard his true intentions directly, so I couldn’t know for sure whether he was really considering my feelings.

But even if my guess was completely off, the fact that he helped Mii-chan already proved he was a kind Senpai. After all, he took her to the hospital for her sake, and he prepared all sorts of things so he could keep her… Someone who wasn’t kind could never do that. That was why I couldn’t bring myself to believe he was a bad person like everyone said. 

W-well… I mean, I’m still a little scared, but…

“Well, still…There’s no way someone who loves animals could be a bad person!”

I said that aloud while making a small guts pose. There was no way someone who loved animals could be bad. So Senpai wasn’t that kind of person…Probably. And that kind (maybe) Senpai told me that I could keep playing with Mii-chan from now on. So I would take him up on that offer and visit his apartment to help take care of her!

Alright, next time I go, I should bring her some yummy canned cat food and maybe look for a new toy she’d enjoy!
