Chapter 1: Getting the Trash Skill [Super Recovery]
Today was the day we’d all been waiting for—my, Zenon Greivan’s, 15th birthday, and also the day of the [Skill Bestowal Ceremony].
The main military commanders of the Greivan border count house, the shield that protected the kingdom and spent their days in constant battle, had all gathered at the temple.
Everyone was staring at me with this crazy intense heat in their eyes.
“Young master, you’re finally gonna be a full-fledged man now. We’ve been waiting for this day forever!”
“Let’s charge across the battlefield together and show those imperial bastards what’s what!”
“Another [Sword Saint] is about to be born! Uoooohhh! Long live Zenon-samaaa!”
These tough-looking guys raised their weapons and let out these huge war cries.
My heart was pounding so hard from all the expectation and anxiety mixed together—I couldn’t stop it.
In this world, when you hit 15, the gods grant you a special ability called a skill. That’s when you’re officially recognized as an adult.
Skills come in three types: combat, magic, and production.
Combat skills boost your physical abilities or attack power, while magic skills amp up your mana or let you use special kinds of magic.
Among combat skills, the absolute top-tier one is the Sword Saint skill. Anyone who gets it has their sword attacks become superhuman—they can unleash slashes strong enough to cut right through castle walls.
My dad, Greivan border count Baldo, got the Sword Saint skill more than 20 years ago and hasn’t lost a single battle on the field since. He’s called the kingdom’s greatest general, respected by all his retainers and trusted completely by the king.
But about a year ago, the enemy Balzark Empire finally succeeded in developing magical weapon golems and started throwing them into the war. Ever since then, the tide’s been turning against us.
To put it bluntly, us—the Greivan border count army guarding the border with the empire—have been getting our asses handed to us over and over.
No matter how hard Dad fights, when the rest of our side collapses, we have no choice but to retreat. We’ve already lost a third of our territory.
That’s exactly why everyone was pinning all their hopes on me. They were waiting for the miracle that could turn everything around—a new Sword Saint being born.
“Hahaha! Zenon, don’t worry. You’ve been grinding sword training every single day. There’s no way you won’t get the Sword Saint skill!”
My one-eyed giant of a dad slapped me on the shoulder to cheer me up.
Apparently, without even realizing it, my body had started shaking.
“Of course, Father. My dream is to become a swordsman who surpasses you!”
“Hahaha! Look at this kid, talking big!”
Dad looked really happy and messed up my hair with his big hand.
Skills are decided not just by bloodline, but also by how you’ve lived your first 15 years—what kind of life you’ve led, what desires you’ve held.
The Greivan border count house has been a famous sword family for generations, always getting combat skills related to swordsmanship.
I was born as the eldest son, and ever since I was little, I’ve poured everything into sword training.
So yeah, I was definitely gonna get the Sword Saint skill.
…No, I had to get it.
If I didn’t, our defeat was guaranteed. I’d end up getting killed on the battlefield!
After all, even that monster of a big sister of mine lost and died in battle.
Half a year ago, my sister—who was three years older—went out like usual, promising she’d come back and spar with me when she returned from the front… but she never came home.
Of course I was crushed by losing her, but more than that, it hit me hard how unfair war is—how even the strongest people are always one step away from death.
That’s why I threw myself even harder into sword training. I didn’t wanna die.
God, please! Give me the strongest skill!
“Then we shall begin the Skill Bestowal Ceremony.”
The old priest said it solemnly and placed his hand on my head.
…Huh? What’s this?
While everyone watched with bated breath, I got hit with this weird feeling—like I’d seen this scene before.
“O great god who shines upon all things in the heavens above, grant your grace to this servant of yours.”
As the old priest chanted the incantation, my body got wrapped in dazzling light.
I could feel some massive power pouring from the priest’s palm straight into me.
“Ugh…!?”
I clenched my teeth without thinking, totally shocked.
Yeah, I knew this ceremony. I’d experienced it.
Where the hell…? The second I thought that, one word flashed in my head.
Otome game “The Holy Love Poem You Weave”… or “KimiKoi” for short.
This skill bestowal ceremony was exactly the same as the prologue from the game I grinded like crazy in my past life!
It sounded way too out there, but I couldn’t think of anything else.
Back then, my little sister got me into it somehow, and I ended up getting super addicted. On days off I’d play for dozens of hours straight without eating or sleeping.
Even though it was an otome game, it had tons of strategy simulation and combat parts, so even as a guy I found it really satisfying.
If this was real… holy crap, this was amazing.
I could actually meet my favorite characters in real life!? My top waifu was the protagonist, the saintess Alicia.
For a second I totally forgot I was in the middle of the ceremony and just felt pure joy.
“…It is finished. The skill God has bestowed upon Zenon Greivan is [Super Recovery].”
The old priest’s announcement made the whole place go dead silent, like someone dumped cold water on it.
“Huh…?”
Dad’s confused voice.
The heat drained from the commanders’ faces, replaced by murmurs of “What the hell is that?” and “Isn’t it a combat skill?”
I was stunned, totally lost.
There was no skill called [Super Recovery] in the combat category.
In the entire long history of the Greivan border count house, had the eldest son ever gotten anything other than a combat skill? No way.
And above all, I had zero memory of a skill called Super Recovery from my game knowledge. What the hell was going on?
“…What kind of skill is it?”
Dad stepped up to the priest with a scary look on his face.
“It is a combat skill on par with Sword Saint, correct?”
The old priest hesitated for a second, then steeled himself and answered.
“…I’m very sorry to say this, but according to God’s oracle, it is a magic-type skill. Its effects are ‘You will be able to use recovery magic. Recovery effects will be greatly enhanced.’”
“R-Recovery magic…?”
The murmurs from everyone got louder.
“What’s that? I’ve never even heard of such magic…!?”
Dad looked absolutely stunned.
I was so shocked I couldn’t even speak.
The words “recovery magic” and the whole concept didn’t exist in this world. Recovery magic was only ever called the [Miracle of Healing] and allowed solely to the saintess.
In this world, only one person could use recovery magic to heal injuries—the protagonist, the saintess Alicia.
The game devs said in an interview that if just anyone could use broken recovery magic like that, wars would never end and the world would collapse from overpopulation, so they made it exclusive to the protagonist.
Dad’s shoulders were shaking, and then he finally exploded.
“Magic is way inferior to the sword! Not even a [Sword Master], let alone Sword Saint… Don’t tell me you were slacking off on your sword training!?”
Dad and the commanders couldn’t see any value in recovery magic, but I was different.
As I chewed over the skill’s effects, inside I was shaking with excitement.
Yesssssss!
Looks like God answered my wish in the absolute best way possible.
Because if I mastered recovery magic, I could even instantly regrow missing limbs.
“With this, I won’t have to die! Thank you, God!”
I was so happy I accidentally shouted it out loud.

This is dumb, first of there is no corilation between what you do in life and what skill you get, essentailly a gacha and I refuse to belive a general, greatest even would not get the importance of something like healing or recovery or whatever it is cslled.
And the concept of close range hand to hand is better then range is absurd, like a decently skilled mage should be able to take down even the greatest sword master if they use their magic properly.
Like WTF is this obsection of isaksi or fantecy in general with male combat, it does not make any stinking sense.
I am dropping out, if the story characters, ones who know war are dumb enough to call this useless then I am sorry, I do not want to loose braincells.
These guys are way too retarded. If this ability existed earlier, then the family wouldn’t have lost the eldest daughter, and they would’ve saved a lot of soldiers, thus pushing the Empire back. As a result, they lost a third of their territory and took many losses. You’d think they’d look at this and go, “Oh, with this, we finally have a chance!”
This is why muscle-heads are no good. 😪
TThis is soo stupid, so your kingdom is losing badly. 1 extra person with a skill is gonna do shit all. Healing looked down on though it can keep an army going AND recover the unrecoverable but no magic bad….
I hate series like this as rulers this retarded wouldnt still be rulers
This trope really is confusing. Baffling even. These worlds where all emphasis on combat jobs or skills is prioritized over other jobs/skills, and if it’s a job/skill that either has been used improperly until now, has had a bad reputation, or even hasn’t ever existed before, it’s viewed as “useless” or “unwanted” as it’s not the job/skill that they were expecting, so the MC ends up getting disowned, banished, etc. Isn’t that rather… stupid, short-sighted, and arrogant? Shouldn’t you test out the skills/jobs first before making assumptions/judgements?
I mean, [Recovery] or [Healer], [Appraisal], [Map] or [Bird’s Eye View], [Storage], [Production Magic] or [Creation Magic], etc. None of these are useless or bad abilities. If they have been used poorly, it’s because no one’s bothered to experiment with it and prefer to just stamp them out or exile them, thus ending any possible discoveries or enlightenments.
For military-oriented, trade-oriented, black-ops-oriented territories, territories that struggle with resources, conflicting borders, or families that specialize in intelligence networks, diplomacy, trade, or military, these skills are VITAL!!! In fact, it could even be said to be DANGEROUS skills.
Any healing or recovery skills could heal injured soldiers, and OP/Cheat variants could even recover lost limbs or resurrect the dead. And it allows your side to outlast your enemies. That’s VERY necessary for an army, or if you’re dealing with plagues. Heck, you could even loan them out to other families in exchange for benefits or money.
With [Storage], you can easily store anything: classified documents, evidence, treaties/contracts, products, weapons, food, etc. Of course, it depends on the storage capacity, as some abilities go anywhere from bag-size, to backpack-size, to room-size, to wagon-size – or if it’s a cheat ability – as vast as a kingdom, able to hold enough supplies for an army of 100,000 men for a long campaign, or carry an entire merchant caravan, an entire fleet’s worth of cargo, etc. Also, if it’s the type that allows food and corpses to remain fresh, you can use it as food storage for your territory (or kingdom) in case an emergency happens, such as if crops fall or a war happened. And you can store corpses in them, preventing them from rotting and allowing you to transport them back home to their loved ones. It’s also good for wet-work or black ops. I’ve also seen MCs use storage for combat by throwing things into storage and then release them against their enemies as surprise attacks and attacks that don’t require additional time or mana.
Needless to say, this could be considered a dangerous ability and it’s highly likely that one could be pressed into service against their will as a result. Which means that MCs who get banished because of this ability makes zero sense as it’s a skill that’s way too valuable to let go.
With [Teleportation], I don’t need to say much. It’s perfect for traveling or sending messages. Also good for assassination if done right. If it’s a cheat ability, you can transport entire groups or armies or caravans or fleets from one place to another.
[Appraisal] could help you find excellent people to hire as an employer, or if you’re looking to have an adventurer party. It’s also good for territory management. And it helps alert you to danger and can find out the identity of anyone you meet to discern if they are who they say they are. So it’s good for espionage or counter-espionage work. Also helps in finding items and plants and monsters, and prevents fraud and getting scammed if you’re buying something.
[Map] or [Bird’s Eye View] can help you navigate easily without issue. Also good if you’re a battlefield commander, a scout, or a strategist. Merchant, too.
[Production] or [Creation] magic is OP. Aside from it being great if you’re a merchant or a peddler, it’s great in that you could grow crops, create weapons, armor, clothes, furniture, vehicles, ships, money, maps, etc. Particularly if this is a cheat ability type.
Needless to say, this whole concept is truly absurd. IT would be nice if there was an actual job/skill that would cause the MC’s family to disown them for legitimate reasons, such as [Thief], [Assassin], [Clown/Jester], [Demon King], [Necromancer], etc.
Or heck, have there be a story where the family DOESN’T disown them, but supports the MC and tries to study the job/skill and see if it’s truly worthless or if there are secrets. You’d think these people would be original with this. But I”m kinda getting sick of them rehashing templates without any originality. 🙄
Couldn’t you give him his own skill?🤨🤨first chapter already frustrated😒not good
