Chapter 62:
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Minato.”
The second semester had started. Well, that didn’t mean anything had really changed, and as usual, Yumekawa came over to my seat while calling my name.
“Good morning.”
“Morning. You’re not with Yuzu today?”
“Yeah. She said she forgot something at home.”
“I see. But you two were together yesterday too.”
“Pretty much. We’re together almost every day.”
Nothing much had changed between me and Kurenai either. We still spent every day in my cramped room, she’d occasionally go home and then come back again. She’d even started cooking for me when I had my part-time job, but her quiet, prickly personality hadn’t changed.
It’s just that…
“Good morning, Minato.”
Kurenai, who had naturally started calling me by my first name, seemed to have become a bit more possessive.
“Morning, Yuzu.”
“Good morning, Arisu. Don’t try to steal my boyfriend.”
“Ahaha, I’m not trying to. Really, I never expected you to be the jealous type, Yuzu.”
“I’m not jealous. Anyway, just don’t get too friendly with Minato when I’m not around.”
Rather than being angry, she looked troubled as she said that. Kurenai, then continued.
“That’s exactly what I mean, Yuzuha.”
“What do you mean, exactly?”
When I butted in, she pouted again. Back then, we weren’t even friends, let alone lovers. We couldn’t be honest with each other, so the only way we could stay close was in that awkward, twisted relationship. We couldn’t even say each other’s names properly.
Yuzuha Kurenai. Now, she is my precious girlfriend.
“Man, you two are just too sweet. Alright then, Yuzu, next time let’s all hang out, all the three of us!”
“If it’s the three of us… I guess that’s okay.”
With a small chuckle at Yuzuha’s awkward reply, Arisu went back to her seat.
“Seriously, you’re pretty popular, aren’t you?”
“Yumekawa doesn’t count.”
“Nope, she’s the most dangerous. That’s why I’m not letting my guard down.”
Saying that, Yuzuha laughed and seeing her like that, I couldn’t help but laugh too. For the first time in a while, school actually felt fun again.

Chapter 63:
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Autumn had passed, and the weather was starting to get a little chilly. The highlight of the second semester, the sports festival, had been a huge success—but neither Kurenai nor I played much of a role in it.
The surprising one was Asou-san. She served as the anchor in the grade-level relay, and with a speed that rivaled the track team, she thrilled the crowd.
I heard that up until middle school, she had been on the track team, and had nearly made it to the national competition. She was a truly amazing athlete. Apparently, the reason she quit sports in high school had something to do with her ex-boyfriend.
He’d gotten jealous, telling her not to join the same club as other guys, complaining that her uniform showed too much skin—so she tearfully gave it up. When I asked if she had any regrets, she smiled and said, “That just means my passion for it wasn’t strong enough to begin with.”
That slightly defiant attitude, always putting others first was the one of the reasons why I was proud to have a senpai like Asou-san. By the way, she was planning to go on to college after all. And if the mood hit right, she said she might take up a sport again then.
We were still working part-time together, just like always. We always had and I had a feeling we would always will. I didn’t dislike our relationship, that showed no sign of changing.
“Minato—good morning.”
As I shivered in my seat from the cold air blowing in from outside while reflecting on those things, Yumekawa called out to me.
“Morning. You’re here early.”
“So are you. Where’s Yuzu?”
“She’s in the bathroom. If you keep talking to me, she’s gonna get mad again.”
“Ahaha, from the way you say that, it sounds like things are going well with Yuzu.”
“Strangely enough, we haven’t fought at all.”
Yumekawa and I had reached the point where we’d just exchange a few words in the morning like this. Whether it was out of deference to Yuzu or because she hesitated to talk to me, I wasn’t sure. But right now, this distance felt just right.
“Oh, there’s Yuzu.”
“Arisu, good morning.”
“Huh? You’re not mad that I’m talking with Minato?”
“It’s fine. He’s not the kind of guy who’d cheat over something like that.”
“Hmmm. You two really are all lovey-dovey. Well then, be happy together.”
Yumekawa nodded repeatedly, then returned to her seat.
“What were you talking about with Arisu?”
“You. She said we seem close.”
“Hmmm.”
“What’s with that suspicious tone?”
“I get anxious. Like, what if you were doing something with Arisu when I wasn’t around?”
“Anxious, huh.”
“Don’t you hate girls who get jealous like this?”
“Well, I feel the same way, so I can’t exactly blame you.”
“You do?”
“Yuzu, when you acted kind of distant, I kept thinking—maybe you liked someone else, maybe you were hiding the real reason you couldn’t date me. I thought about it every day.”
“What the heck, me too.”
“Haha, really? Then I guess we’re the same.”
“Yeah, we really are. We need to put our feelings into words so neither of us gets insecure.”
“Yeah.”
“Then, how do you feel about me?”
“Eh? I mean, we’re in class right now.”
“You said we should put it into words, didn’t you?”
“…Geez.”
I glanced around and made sure no one was nearby. When I hesitated, she grinned playfully and asked.
“Are you embarrassed if someone hears?”
Looking at Yuzu’s mischievous smile, I let out a helpless laugh too.
“I love you.”
“Yeah. Me too. From now on, let’s say it to each other every day.”
“Even at school?”
“Of course. And when it’s just the two of us, too.”
She gently placed her hand on mine on the desk. Then Yuzu looked out the window and narrowed her eyes into a small smile.
“Nice weather we have today.”
“Yeah. I used to like rainy days better when I was still in club activities though.”
“You’re not in a club anymore. So, how about a game of catch sometime?”
“Sounds good.”
“Then we’ll have to go buy gloves.”
“You threw yours away?”
“Nope, I still have it. But I think I want a new one.”
“I see. Then let’s go check some out sometime.”
“Yeah.”
I followed Yuzu’s gaze. The bright sunlight made me squint. And then, we both forgot we were even in the classroom. We gently squeezed each other’s hands.
Her hand was exactly the same as the one I first held that day. But now, the fear that it might slip away and never return—it was gone.
When I looked at Yuzu, she looked back at me. We said nothing. We just narrowed our eyes and gazed at each other. Then the bell rang, signaling the start of class.
