Chapter 18: The Losing Jail Guard Meets the Merchant of Death
“So yeah, I decided to go help Miss Katiana. …Not that I’m sure how much use I’ll be.”
I explained the whole situation to Laecia.
As soon as she heard it, she was not on board.
“I object!! For a demon like you, Master, going to the human kingdom is basically suicide!!”
“Yeah, I mean, you’re not wrong. But… I still want to help my friend.”
“T-That’s your only reason…?”
Demons didn’t really get the concept of friendship.
But I used to be human.
When someone you care about is in trouble, it’s normal to want to help them. If you know something terrible’s going to happen to them, of course you’d try to stop it.
Okay, fine, maybe this was also a bit of a spur-of-the-moment decision.
“Uh, fine!! I get it!!”
“Wait, get what?”
“I’ll help you too!! …I owe you a debt, after all, Master.”
“…That’s a huge help.”
“Hmmph!! Don’t thank me or anything!!”
Well, that was an unexpected bonus.
Sure, Laecia was probably a well-known face among humans…
But as long as we covered her up, we should be fine.
“Honestly. You really put on a show, Lugus-suss.”
“Huh?”
“You were just hugging me from behind, practically whimpering against my butt.”
“!? W-Wait, no! That’s not— I mean, it is, but it’s not!!”
“Whaaa!? Master, don’t tell me you and this human girl—!?”
“N-No! It’s not like that!! Okay, it is, but it isn’t!!”
“Hyan♡ W-Where are you touching in all this chaos!?”
It took a lot of time to clear up Laecia’s misunderstanding.
“Hey, we’re about to enter human territory.”
“Uh, this is making me a little nervous.”
“It’s your first time invading human lands, isn’t it, Master?”
“I-I’m not invading anything, okay!?”
Laecia, who regularly raided human lands, didn’t seem nervous at all.
Then again, she was a high-ranking officer. Comparing her to a lowly jail guard like me was just rude.
“We’ll reach Katiana-something’s country in a few days, but I’m worried about food supplies.”
“I can hunt for us if needed.”
“No, animals around here have fled because demons and humans are always fighting. There aren’t many good targets left. If only some bandits would show up.”
“Bandits?”
“Oh, you don’t know? If you rob bandits of their food and valuables, it doesn’t count as a crime. I’ve done it plenty of times to fund my research.”
Oh, right, yeah. That was a thing in this world’s lore.
I mean, bandits survive by stealing from others, so taking from them doesn’t seem too bad.
Just as I thought that…
“Um, hey, Miss Elette. Is that carriage over there… getting attacked?”
“Mhm. …You have sharp eyes. I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out.”
On the edge of the cockpit display, a group of people was attacking a carriage.
“Well then, allow me to go and wipe them all out!!”
“There’s no need for that.”
““Huh?””
Elette calmly adjusted a few levers.
The next thing I knew, there was a loud clunk as a massive crossbow popped out from the golem’s shoulder.
The golem aimed, and a bolt shot out with a whizz.
And by bolt, I mean a massive projectile moving fast enough to take down anyone it hit.
Whoa, that was… awesome.
“This golem has weapons like that?”
“The ‘Prototype Ultimate Invincible Golem Mark 58 Super’ is a combat golem, after all. Though, aside from this crossbow, it only has two swords.”
She sounded a bit disappointed.
Guess it didn’t have all the crazy weapons you’d see on a Gundam or Armored Core mech…
And because I was thinking that, I let a comment slip out of my mouth.
“Well, I guess it doesn’t have missiles or a gatling gun, huh.”
“What are those?”
“Huh? Uh, well… weapons that either blow everything up with explosives or fire a ton of metal bullets really fast.”
“Interesting. Tell me more about these weapons. In detail.”
“Wait, hold on! The carriage is still being attacked—”
“Forget that! Tell me now! My curiosity is on fire!!”
Even though the carriage was still under attack, Elette’s eyes sparkled as she leaned in, eager for an explanation.
After a lot of effort, I managed to calm her down and help her take out the bandits.
“Hmm. Looks like the people being attacked were merchants.”
“Oh, then maybe they’ll share some food with us?”
“Good idea. Let’s go negotiate. Oh, and Lugus-suss, you will be telling me more about those weapons later.”
“…Y-Yeah.”
I was not looking forward to that.
Elette climbed out of the golem and headed over to the merchants we’d just saved.
Laecia and I followed behind her.
Thankfully, Elette had given us magical cloaks that hid our identities, so no one would know we were demons.
Now, about these merchants we just saved…
“Thank you so much~. You saved our goods from being stolen~.”
I recognized her immediately.
Long pink-blonde hair, a gentle smile, and an absolutely stunning figure.
And her breasts were… huge.
We’re talking Marisela-level, maybe even bigger.
I knew who this woman was.
Any Prison Heroine player knew her all too well.
“It’s her… The Merchant of Death!!”
“Excuse me~?”
Her name was Nea.
In Prison Heroine, she was the merchant who sold you the magic stones needed for gacha pulls to get heroines.
A lot of players, after spending a fortune and still not getting the character they wanted, decided the magic stones Nea sold were cursed.
That’s how she got the nickname “Merchant of Death.”
