ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“So pixies worship a god…?”
“Yeah. Though we aren’t as devout as we used to be. Wanna go in?”
“Yes, please.”
A church for pixies, huh… I was a bit curious about that. As I pushed open the large wooden doors, my eyes were immediately drawn to a grand statue of a goddess. Bathed in the glow of the chandelier and the light filtering through stained-glass windows, the statue shimmered with an almost divine radiance. The sheer mystique of the sight made me stop in my tracks, captivated by it.
“Hm? Oh, if it isn’t Gyle! It’s been a while, huh?”
From deeper inside the church, a man with an air of purity stepped forward. Judging by his priest-like robes, he was most likely the priest.
“It’s been a while, Priest-sama!”
“What brings you here today? Are you showing the town to this Human-san?”
Priest-san slowly turned his gaze toward me and smiled warmly, but… Something about it felt… Off. Every pixie I had met so far had some sort of reaction upon noticing me, but this priest showed none whatsoever. Maybe he was used to keeping his emotions to himself since he was a priest?
“Yeah, since I had the chance, I decided to give him a tour on behalf of the town. Would it be alright if we looked around inside?”
“Of course! The church belongs to everyone, after all. But since I know this place better than anyone, why don’t I guide you myself?”
At those words, Gyle cast me an uneasy glance.
“If you’d be willing, we’d be more than grateful. Please, lead the way.”
“Alright then. First, let me tell you about our god… or at least, I would, but we actually don’t remember their proper name anymore.”
“You lost that knowledge when you came here, right?”
“Correct. Sounds like you’ve heard about that from Grandpa Zero… We pixies have forgotten both the name and the form of the god we once worshipped. All we have left are fragmented memories and the fact that we once had faith.”
“Then, this statue…?”
“We gathered the faint memories we had and reconstructed it to the best of our ability. It’s probably far from accurate, but it’s better than nothing.”
The priest looked both sorrowful and frustrated as he spoke, but something about this whole story didn’t sit right with me. Wouldn’t there have been books or notes that recorded the god’s name and appearance?
“Weren’t there any documents or books that mentioned the god?”
“There were… or at least, there should have been. But every single record of the god’s name or form was blacked out.”
“What?!”
What’s the meaning of that?!
The pixies hadn’t just lost their memories randomly. Everyone had forgotten the same specific things and any written record of what was lost had been deliberately censored… It could only mean that some external force was at play.
“Hmm… Gyle, I believe the library has some of those redacted records. Could you ask the librarian to bring them here?”
“Uh… Y-yeah, understood!”
With that, Gyle nodded and dashed off toward the library. Now, only the priest and I remained in the church. I subtly put some distance between us, making sure he wouldn’t notice. There was something off about the way he sent Gyle away—it felt like he had another ploy in mind.
“Now then. It looks like you think something is off, right?”
“Well, yeah. I don’t think the memory loss was just a coincidence.”
“I figured most people would think that.”
“Huh?”
“Most pixies assume it was just an accident.”
I had a really bad feeling about this. Judging from how the situation was unfolding, he would most likely ask me to do something for him…
“No. Absolutely not. I’m done with favors.”
“S-So fast?!”
“The mood is practically screaming ‘I need to ask you for a favor.'”
“Well, you’re right…I just have a few questions for you…”
“Huh??”
I frowned. Questions? My bad feeling sensor was blaring at full power.
“Do you think we come from the same world?”
“…What a bad question to ask.”
I frowned even harder at that. Ever since I first met the pixies, I already had my doubts.
Are they really from the same world… The same planet as us? The answer is probably no. Maybe they’re creatures from another planet… Or maybe from another world altogether.
“Haha, sorry, sorry… But judging from your answer, you don’t think we’re from the same world, do you?”
“Yeah… Honestly, it’s hard to believe something like you exists in the same world as us.”
Even with the massive advancements in space technology thanks to magic stone-powered tools, humanity had yet to discover another intelligent species. The idea that they were from another planet seemed highly unlikely.
“I see, I see… In that case, let me give you a little present.”
Saying that, the priest pulled a card from his pocket. It was entirely blue, about the size of a trading card, small enough to fit snugly in a chest pocket.
“This card is…?”
“It’s a card-shaped scroll infused with magic. I don’t know what kind of spell is inside… but I guarantee there’ll be a moment when it proves useful for you.”
“Hooo….”
I really don’t want something this suspicious… It won’t explode the moment I take it, right?
“You know, in movies, keeping something like this in your chest pocket saves you by stopping a bullet at a crucial moment.”
“From which decade that movie is from…?”
Besides, a bullet would pierce through a card like this.
…Wait. A bullet? How come a pixie even knows what a bullet is? If he knows what a bullet is then he knows what a gun is? Did the explorers who attacked them ten years ago use a gun?
The more I thought about it, the more suspicious this priest seemed to me, but refusing his ‘gift’ outright might raise his suspicion on me.
Fine, I’ll take it for now and just get rid of it later.
“Alright, I’ll take it for now.”
I accepted the card and carefully placed it in my bag. At least it didn’t explode on contact.
“One last thing. I just want to make it clear, I’m not your enemy.”
Not my enemy…?
“What do you mean by tha—”
Just as I was about to question him further—
『It’s terrible! Absolutely terrible!』
Suddenly, Master’s voice echoed in my head. A telepathic message. And nothing good ever came from a telepathic message.
『Senavia! Senavia has disappeared!!!』
