Chapter 32:〈Fireball〉

I messed up. I was so panicked when I sensed the magic power was about to disappear that I ended up forgetting to say ‘mini’ before ‘fire.’ In an instant, flames about the size of a burning campfire erupted from my fingertips—

And it hit Grandpa Pixie. The flames enveloped Grandpa Pixie, burning him up. 

This is bad, at this rate, the old pixie will get roasted…! What should I do—

“You idiot!”

“Buheee-!”

Suddenly, I was splashed in the face with water. I was hit hard by water, like a bucket full of water was overturned right on me. The impact made me drop to the ground, but I managed to prop myself with my hands. 

“Are you trying to roast me alive?!”

“Yo-You’re still alive!!”

After wiping the water off my face with my sleeve, I opened my eyes and there, I saw the old pixie standing with his arms crossed, glaring down at me. 

“If I hadn’t cast a water barrier at the very last minute, I’d be a charred mess right now!”

“I’m really sorry…”

“You… You were imagining a firestorm, not just a small flame, weren’t you?”

“Ugh… I’m truly sorry…”

I had been exploring dungeons solo for so long. I hardly ever saw any fire-based skills in action. The first time I ever saw one was during my fight with the dragon. My mind couldn’t help but to wander to that memory.

“Actually, I’d like to complain a bit more, but… The heck? The heck with your growth speed?!”

“Huh?”

“As I’ve already told you, us pixies are skilled at controlling magic power, but even we couldn’t gather so much magic power in one point in such a short amount of time… Yet, you managed to do it in less than an hour…”

Huh? Is that so? I think it’s probably because I use 〈Shock Blast〉. Generally speaking, using 〈Shock Blast〉 doesn’t require high technique or anything. But since I use 〈Shock Blast〉 for basically anything, from moving at a high speed, slowing down and even for attacking, I have to learn how to adjust the power of the blast and the timing with extra precision. Thanks to that, I think my ability to concentrate on the smallest detail is better than most people. 

“If you keep this up, you might be able to use intermediate level magic by tomorrow.”

The old man said with a hint of amusement. It made me wonder just how strong the intermediate level was. Maybe it was only a bit weaker than the fire dragon’s breath?

“Intermediate level? So there are different levels of magic?”

“Yes, that’s right. The 〈Fire〉spell that you used earlier is a elementary level magic while 〈Mini Fire〉 that I used earlier is considered as a mere lifestyle magic, which is the lowest level of magic.”

…So I completely skipped the beginner level and went straight ahead with the next level. 

“Well, since we are already reaching this point, do you want to try some other beginner magic?”

“Yes, please!”

“Alright. There are three spells for each attribute at the elementary level. For fire attribute, there’s 〈Fire〉 that you used earlier and then 〈Fireball〉 to shoot a ball of fire and 〈Firewall〉 to create a wall of fire.”

“There’s not much variety of spell for fire attribute, huh?”

“Well, that’s the case for elementary level magic. But from intermediate tier onwards, you will have more varieties. For example, there are 300 fire attribute intermediate tier spells.”

“Three hundred…?!”

My eyes opened wide in shock at the sheer number of spells. By the way, we had a skill called 〈Fire Magic〉. This skill allowed you to use fire-based skill, but you could only use a total of 40 different spells with it. So… This was the true power of magic. 

“There’s no end to it if you want me to explain it to you in great detail. It would take over an hour at least, so let’s save that for another time. For now, let me show you an example of another elementary level magic spell.”

The old man said before he outstretched his hand towards the target in the training field and…

“〈Fireball〉”

A fireball about the size of an adult’s head materialized from thin air and flew toward the target. 

BOOM!!!

The fireball hit the target dead in the center without any hint of deviation in its trajectory and the target exploded into smithereens. 

Huh? This is an elementary level magic spell…? Even I don’t have the confidence that I could survive after being hit by that thing!!

“I-Isn’t that spell is a bit too strong?”

Cold sweat trickled down my cheeks. If I were to face this old man as an enemy… Just thinking about it made me shudder. 

“Ohohoho… Well, I might’ve made a minor mistake with the output power…”

The old man said while glancing toward me. 

Is this a warning to me..? No. It’s not. This is a challenge. He’s definitely testing me.

“I’ll do it…!”

Closing my eyes, I gathered all my magic power into my palms.

How to increase the power of the fire? It must be the temperature. If the temperature of the fire is higher, the fire should be more powerful too! Just red fire won’t do. I need to go beyond red… I need an extremely hot fire, like something blue or white..!

“〈Fireball〉”

I released a pure white fireball. 

It’s a success! I did it!

But that joy was short-lived. The 〈Fireball〉 I cast slowly moved through the air and before it could hit the target, the white fireball fell to the ground.

I probably focused too much magic power on the temperature, which caused the firing speed to slow down significantly. I took a moment to cool my head. I had been thinking about it from a scientific perspective, but since magic itself was a technique that defied common sense, there was no need to think about it scientifically. I had to think about it more simply. 

“〈Fireball〉”

The red 〈Fireball〉I cast moved toward the target at a faster speed than before and… 

Boom!

It exploded in a small blast.
