Chapter 43: Final Chapter – The Most Evil Remains in Place
A few months have passed since that heavy contract was made.
The summer break has ended, and the season is starting to shift toward autumn. It’s the first day back after the summer vacation.
Let’s look back at what’s happened so far.
Even though I’m familiar with the original story of Yami Disease Academy and Ruriko, who has gone through many cycles in this world, predicting what’s going to happen has become more difficult with each passing day.
Just like when a small foreign object gets stuck in the gears and stops them, the usual paths I knew stopped moving.
…Maybe that’s a bad analogy.
In any case, the story has deviated from its original course.
It felt like there were too many events like the one where everyone enjoys the pool in swimsuits every week.
There were also numerous events involving the four great beauties, like barbecues and others, happening one after another.
There was no option to refuse. If you favored one group, you would end up neglecting the others.
Obvious favoritism leads to jealousy, which can easily become the seed of trouble.
The solution was to create opportunities to meet with everyone equally, showing care to each of them. This was truly a noble form of philanthropy.
“I was really bothered by this deep down,” Ruriko says.
Ruriko and I are in that room.
It’s the room with a whiteboard, where Ruriko’s research materials are placed.
“It’s impossible to make ideals come true. The best we can do is go for a better path,” she says.
“I just want high school to end already. Once that happens, I can get out of this school framework,” she adds.
She’s right.
The only reason I interact with the remaining three of the four great beauties is that we’re in the same high school class. Otherwise, without a big reason, I’d probably drift away from them.
Of course.
“There’s zero chance someone like you would obsess over me like Ruriko does,” I joke.
“Are you being too self-conscious?”
“I’m not arrogant enough to really think that. I’m just talking about possibilities.”
“Good. The one who understands you the best isn’t some random person in the world, it’s me,” she says.
“Quite the confident one. I like that.”
“I believe I have the potential to be a yandere,” she replies.
“Guess you’re not as oblivious as I thought,” I say.
She’s older in terms of mental age, Ruriko says.
We’re in the same cycle, but the time and experiences we’ve gone through are vast.
“I don’t think I can control your feelings, but you know, my feelings… you’ve stolen them, haven’t you? We’re comrades, both of us outside of the world’s logic.”
And then,
“In reality, we’re special in this world, and when measured by the yardstick of feelings, we’re even more special.”
“That sounds like an indirect proposal,” I remark.
“Yeah, a proposal. How many times has this been? I’ve lost count,” she says.
Even during that summer break, Ruriko repeatedly checked our relationship.
I imagine there’s still some insecurity within her.
She’s been betrayed by the world and isolated many times. She probably wonders if the world will disappear again, leaving her behind…
This line of thinking is based purely on my own assumptions. It’s the product of my own imagination.
Even if it’s just a guess, I think it holds up somewhat.
“After a whole summer together, my thoughts haven’t changed,” I tell her.
“Thank you. That’s the answer I wanted to hear,” she says.
I’ve been asked the same thing many times. At first, it bothered me, but now I’m getting used to it.
Will there come a day when Ruriko doesn’t need to keep asking?
No.
It’s up to me to build trust, so that she won’t need to ask so often.
“Fortunately, we made it through the summer without any blades pointed at us,” she says.
“I was on edge. It always felt like I was holding a live grenade,” I reply.
“From autumn to graduation, there’s no time to relax,” she says.
“Seems like a long stretch,” I comment.
“I’ve made it through so many times alone, you know? With the two of us, it’ll be easier,” she says.
“Experience speaks, huh?”
What awaits us after we break out of the loop is unknown.
If we reach a happy ending, the game will be over. To start over, we’d have to begin from the beginning again.
If this is a game world, will there even be a future prepared after we clear it? Will there be data stored for the future?
What if everyone except Ruriko has also been through many loops, and I’m the only one who doesn’t know?
…It’s pointless to think about.
I’ve died once already, and this second life was a miraculous gift.
Now, I just want to save Ruriko. I want to help Ruriko who is struggling, suffering, and fighting.
The light that I found amidst despair—Ruriko once described me in nearly those exact words.
My life, the light that was snuffed out by Satsuki, was lost in my first life.
Maybe the lost light was meant to be for Ruriko.
“School’s still going for a little while longer. I might get targeted by other beautiful girls or end up dealing with some troublesome person after a class change,” she says.
“Yeah,” I reply.
“You can talk to them at school if you want, but at home, you’re not getting away from me. If anyone tries to seduce you, I might just grab a knife,” she warns.
“Hey, no more of those yandere girl jokes!” I protest.
“Only if it’s with the other girl,” she teases.
“That’s still the worst,” I mutter.
She laughs, but I’m half sure she’s only joking half-heartedly.
“Anyway, I just want to survive and get out of the loop. I want to become a college student, go to the same university, and live a normal life on the usual path.”
“You want to say goodbye to this special life and stick to the normal timeline, huh?” I ask.
“Of course. But the condition is that it’s with you,” she says.
“I’ll never forget that,” I reply.
As for the challenges and crises waiting ahead, I’ll leave that to the future me.
For now, at this moment, I want to stay by the side of this girl with somewhat special circumstances.
And I pray that, in this second life, the yandere she becomes won’t change, and she will remain my side.
