- Chapter 16 - The Meeting Goes in Circles During the Attacks
The magic academy had been taken over by a mysterious armed group.
When the king heard the news, he immediately called all the top officials together for a meeting.
“Commander, report on the situation.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. The armed group has taken students hostage and is holed up inside the academy. The academy’s defensive walls are keeping them safe, so we can’t just attack.”
“Are all the students captured?”
“No, some students have barricaded themselves in the old school building. Though it’s probably only a matter of time before the group reaches them…”
“..Hmm. At least, can we save the students in the old building?”
“The old building is near the center of the academy. Even if we go over the walls, it would be impossible to get everyone out safely.”
After the commander finished his report, the officials started arguing.
“Damn it!! Where were the guards?! This academy is for the kingdom’s nobles!”
“The guards were also taken down, just like the students. They were all disciples of ‘Sword Saint’ Gamran as they were very skilled fighters.”
“A-are they really that strong?”
Whose Gamran anyway?
Well, ‘Sword Saint’ sounds impressive. Maybe they’re famous and I just don’t know.
“We have no choice but to send all the knights to the capital and crush the armed group with numbers!”
“It’s not that simple! There are hostages! And they’re the children of the nobles who will lead the Xylica Kingdom!”
“Do you mean we should just let the terrorists win? That would ruin the kingdom’s authority and give other countries an opening!”
“And what exactly do these terrorists want?! They’ve held the academy for half a day, and they haven’t said a word!”
The heavy meeting continued.
I glanced at my sister sitting quietly beside me and whispered.
“Hey, big sister. Why are we even here?”
“Don’t ask me. We missed the chance to leave, so we just have to sit it out.”
“I just want to go home.”
What should I do? I’m getting hungry. Maybe I can sneak out for a bit.
“Hey. Where do you think you’re going?”
“To the bathroom.”
“Don’t lie. You’re trying to sneak out, right? If you leave me here, I’ll never forgive you.”
“That means, big sister. Do you think I’m the kind of coward who’d leave you behind? I swear I’m not. Or do you want me to earn the title of poop master?”
“You always lie so easily at times like this. I know you too well.”
Damn, she really knows me.
I tried to sneak past my sister at the edge of the meeting room, using some fake-out moves, but it didn’t work.
After a while, a knight suddenly ran into the room.
“Report!! The leader of the armed group just released a statement!”
“What!?”
“B-but this statement wasn’t directed at us…”
“Enough talking and just tell us now!!”
The knight read the statement―
“‘To Faceless. Come to the magic academy immediately. If you do not obey, we will execute one student every hour.’”
“To Faceless?!”
The king turned his gaze toward my sister.
The officials also followed and started whispering among themselves.
My sister glared at me with a look full of resentment.
Hey, it’s not my fault! I never expected some terrorists to suddenly name me!
“I’ve been wondering, who are those two shady-looking people?”
“They’re Faceless and his companion, the Mysterious Healer Man. They supposedly cured His Majesty’s illness.”
“What!? Do they really exist?!”
“I heard a rumor that Faceless can even restore dead hair follicles. Is that true?”
“Now is not the time to worry about baldness!”
“I’m not bald!! The front just started thinning a bit, that’s all. I am not bald, I swear!!”
The king raised his hand to quiet the restless officials, then looked at my sister.
“Faceless-sama, do you have some connection to the armed group that took over the academy?”
“Eh? T-that’s… Ahem. Now is not the time to talk about that.”
“…Hmm. It seems there is a deep reason behind this.”
My sister covered it up with a mysterious-sounding line.
The officials started shouting, “Explain yourself!!” But she didn’t know anything, so she had nothing to explain. She stayed silent.
No, she wasn’t calm. I could tell she was storing up irritation.
If this keeps going, she might explode and turn the meeting room into a bloodbath…
Just as I was worrying about the near future.
“Everyone, let us talk about something realistic. Even if this has something to do with Faceless, the fact remains that terrorists have attacked our kingdom. If we cannot solve our own problems, other nations will mock us as useless.”
With that one speech, the king calms everyone down.
As expected of the king.
The officials then began discussing how to rescue the students safely and defeat the terrorists, but their arguments kept looping back to the start.
…This might be my chance to slip out.
“Where are you going?”
“This time I really am going to the bathroom.”
“So you’re planning to go to the academy?”
“Bathroom.”
“Really?”
“… ‘If you do not obey, we will execute one student every hour,’ I can’t just sit here.”
Garu Lucan-senpai, even the health committee members I know, any of them could be killed.
I can’t allow that. I won’t.
“So I’m going. Since you’re Faceless right now, I’ll act as the Mysterious Healer.”
“Is that important…”
“Very.”
I slipped out of the meeting room and sprinted toward the magic academy.
The academy was surrounded by knights. When I tried to walk through the main gate, a very serious-looking knight stopped me.
“You there!! The magic academy is off limits!! It’s dangerous, so leave at once―”
“Chop!”
“Ugh.”
“Sorry, but I’m in a hurry.”
I knocked out the knight coming at me with a hand chop, then boldly walked into the magic academy.
“You came quicker than expected, Faceless.”
“…You guys again.”
Waiting for me past the main gate was a group dressed all in white.
The same middle-school syndrome group.
So it really was them. No, thinking back, I should’ve known. When they tried something during the magic tournament… When they kidnapped Victoria…
Their behavior had already gone far beyond simple middle-school syndrome. They had twisted themselves too deeply into it. There was no going back anymore.
And I had no way to cure them. So—
“Hyahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!”
“W-what!?”
“I’ve decided!! I’m going to beat the sickness out of you!! It’s the only treatment I can think of right now!!”
I don’t actually believe this will cure them.
And even if they come to their senses and realize how unforgivable their actions were, I’m still turning them over to the knights without hesitation.
With everything they’ve done, the punishment will likely be death.
If I had the power to heal their middle-school syndrome, maybe things wouldn’t have ended like this.
But I don’t.
So all I can do is act based on that fact and deal with them properly.
