ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After that, we rushed around between the hospital and police questioning in total chaos. Apparently, the mysterious collapse of the abandoned house was going to be processed simply as deterioration due to age. Honestly, I didn’t really understand what that phenomenon had been either. From a game perspective, maybe it had tried to forcibly connect some kind of flag. Well, that didn’t matter right now.
In the end, it was night by the time we were finally allowed to go home.
Yesterday, I hadn’t had the mental space to think about myself, but once I sorted through my thoughts, I was able to clearly remember who I was. Satoru Ueno, an ordinary high school student attending a local school. My parents were stationed overseas for work, so I was currently living alone. Apparently, I had a younger sister, but she attended a private all-girls middle school and was living in the dorms.
It felt strange to say “apparently” about my own family…
Still, I never thought I’d get to experience the independent life I’d always dreamed of here! A normal high school student might have a curfew and limited spending money. But the current me had none of those restrictions! Limiter released! For the first time since reincarnating into a game world, I actually felt like I was benefiting from it. Just a little bit, though.
Living alone meant I could act freely! Of course, going straight home and indulging in lazy sleep had also been an option…But that day, I decided to go to Murase-san’s house. Rather, I ended up going home with her to her house. Murase-san’s house was surprisingly close to mine. It was a new, two-story white house.
“M-Mio brought a boyfriend hoooome!?”
“N-Nice to meet you! I’m Ueno Satoru!”
The moment she saw me, Murase-san’s mother let out a scream. Her facial features looked very similar to Murase-san’s, but her expressions were completely different! Her face seemed to shatter in an instant.
“Y-you! They said the police called you, so I was worried sick!”
“I’m sorry.”
“I-If you’re bringing a boyfriend home, at least say so beforehand!”
“T-that’s not…”
Murase-san was completely losing to her mother’s momentum… It was questionable whether this even counted as a conversation.
“Come in, boyfriend-kun. Please stay for dinner. Are you staying the night?”
“Huh?”
“Please, please. It’s messy, but come inside and make yourself comfortable.”
I had thought I wouldn’t be able to boldly step inside like that… but this was an unexpectedly enthusiastic welcome. I was the one who came uninvited, but was this really okay? This was the house of a girl who was an idol, after all… right?
“Th-then I’ll gratefully accept your hospitality!”
“Hehe, you’re lively—unlike Mio.”
Thus, I advanced to the second stage: entering Murase-san’s house. Her mother had called it messy, but the inside of the house was neatly organized everywhere. There were even flowers and paintings decorating certain spots. Maybe Murase-san’s family was actually well-off.
Until dinner was ready, I ended up waiting in Murase-san’s room on the second floor.
“…Why is Ueno-kun in my room?”
“Because I’m worried.”
“Geez.”
I was aware that I had forced my way in… but there was a proper reason for it. Because I didn’t know whether yesterday’s supernatural phenomenon had truly ended. Something invisible might try to kill Murase-san again. Thinking we’d saved her only for it to turn out we hadn’t… That was the one outcome that absolutely couldn’t happen. Her life might be on the line. My own embarrassment or reputation could go to hell for all I cared.
“This is the first time I’ve let a boy into my room.”
“It’s my first time being in a girl’s room.”
“It’s also my first time holding hands with a boy.”
“If you say that, it was my first time carrying a girl on my back.”
“So we’re both first-timers… huh.”
“…”
“…”
We were covered in firsts. Even our conversation had only started yesterday.
“S-so then, what exactly were you planning when you came to my house today?”
“I’m worried about you, Murase-san. If possible, I’d like to stay close to you.”
“S-stay close to me…?”
Murase-san’s stiff facial muscles seemed to freeze even harder. I knew it sounded embarrassing, but I wasn’t lying!
“I-I need to bring a futon.”
“Huh?”
“I wonder if Dad has spare clothes… You should shower too…”
Muttering to herself, Murase-san left the room. Wait, was she really going to let me stay in her room? That felt like it could cause all sorts of problems…
So this is the first girl’s room I’ve ever been in…
I couldn’t help but look around. There was a penguin stuffed animal on the bed. On the desk were several small accessories. Yeah… normal. There wasn’t anything particularly eye-catching. The pink curtains made the whole room look bright, but the furniture itself was fairly simple. Somehow, it was a little different from the kind of girl’s room I had imagined. I had thought it would be more sparkly.
“Ugh… heave-ho…”
The door opened with a bang, and Murase-san came in carrying a futon and a full set of spare clothes in her arms.
“Y-You’re really letting me stay!? Is your family okay with this?”
“Dad’s away on a business trip, so it’s probably fine.”
She muttered that as she dropped the futon onto the floor with a thud.
“N-Normally, if you’re letting a guy stay over, there’d be more… you know, opposition or something!”
“But Mom was already planning on having you stay.”
“That’s ridiculous!? Is that okay for an idol!?”
“I’m more of a pretend idol than anything to be honest.”
“Even if you’re a pretend idol, you’re still an idol, right!?”
Things were getting weird. Yesterday I had definitely been in a horror world, so this development was absolutely strange.
“And I also want to properly thank you for yesterday…”
“Thank me for what?”
“For saving me.”
As she laid out the futon, Murase-san kept glancing at me, then quickly looking away. The sight of her like that was just incredibly cute.
“…What about the bath?”
“Huh?”
“Will you use it? Or not?”
“Well, either is fine, I mean, um…”
“You’re covered in sweat and dust, and we’ve been outside since yesterday. Go take one. Should I run the bath?”
Turning around, Murase-san awkwardly folded a towel and pointed downward while fidgeting. The bathroom must have been downstairs. I glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already nearing seven o’clock. Five hours until midnight… A full day had passed since then. I didn’t know what would happen next. This wasn’t the time to be embarrassed.
“Sorry. Then I’ll stay in your room tonight, Murase-san.”
“Y-yeah…”
Murase-san nodded shyly.
