Episode 8: The Day of the Field Trip, Everything’s Going Fine
The day of the field trip.
When we arrived at the location, everyone was already there.
“Sorry I’m late.”
“No, I just got here too,” Kido replied.
Kido is a background character in the game world.
“Uh, so first we’re going to the aquarium, right? We just go straight there, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right. Let’s go.”
With Kanata’s words, we all started walking.
“Wow, there are a lot of people here.”
“Yeah, looks like some other schools are here for their field trips too. I see other students in uniforms.”
“Seems like it. There are also a lot of regular tourists.”
“Is something going on today?”
“Ah, I think there’s an event. That’s probably why it’s so crowded.”
“What kind of event?”
“Well, I heard some idols are going to dance at a nearby shopping mall. That’s probably why there are so many people here.”
“That’s gotta be it! With this many people, we’re gonna get lost for sure.”
“Yeah, we have to be careful not to get lost.”
Oh, the conversation’s flowing nicely.
I haven’t really said anything, but as long as everyone’s having fun, I’m good.
Yeah, ever since I talked to Narita, I’ve been thinking about it.
First of all, becoming the bad guy again would be the worst. But at the same time, acting like everything’s been forgiven and just casually getting involved with everyone would be rude too.
So, I decided that I’ll only talk to people outside of Narita if I really need to. Narita seems to have gotten used to the way I am lately, and as long as he’s around, I won’t be completely alone. Thanks, Narita. You really saved me.
“We’re walking a lot, huh?”
“Yeah. The website said it was right by the station.”
“Well, they always underestimate the walking time.”
“True. Hey, isn’t that the aquarium?”
“Oh, yeah, it really is.”
As I listened to everyone’s conversation, it seemed like we had reached our first destination.
The logo of the aquarium appeared from behind the building.
We bought tickets at the entrance and went inside.
As soon as we stepped in, a magical atmosphere spread out before us.
“Wow, it’s beautiful.”
“Yeah, it really is. I haven’t been to an aquarium in ages!”
I hadn’t been to one in a long time either. I think the last time was on a school trip to Okinawa in high school.
“Hey, don’t those fish look super cute?”
“Yeah! Oh, those over there have such pretty colors.”
Kanata was happily enjoying herself too. It was nice to see her like this. In the original story, she was usually portrayed as having a more troubled, yandere side, so seeing her happy like this was a relief.
“Hey, Nishikouji…?”
“Huh? What is it?”
I was surprised when someone suddenly spoke to me. Looking beside me, Kido had a slightly excited look on his face.
“Well, you know… I thought you were going to be a lot different than this.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I mean, you’ve been hurt before, right? I’m from high school, so I didn’t know many people from middle school. I guess I had some preconceived notions… but you’re not as scary as I thought.”
“I see. Thanks.”
My response was a little blunt, but I think that’s enough.
I’m glad Kido’s from the high school group. If it were someone from middle school, they’d probably know what Nishikouji had done in the past.
“Hey, Kido-kun, Nishikouji-kun, let’s go to the next exhibit!”
Kanata called out to us.
It seemed we’d already finished looking at the one we were at.
Kido and I followed her and the others to the next tank.
