Episode 32: Study Session with Nagitsuki

The study sessions with Nagitsuki began. However, since Nagitsuki had track practice, we could only hold them in the gaps between her practices.

“Um, for this part, it’s sinΘ, so… if you use this formula—  “Huh? What’s that formula again?”

“It’s written here in the textbook. Look.”  “Oh, you’re right. What does this formula mean, though?”

…Well, things were going pretty rough. It seems like Nagitsuki doesn’t understand most of what’s taught in class. Honestly, even if she got in through a recommendation, how did she manage to get into this school?

After solving problems together for about an hour, we finally finished a few questions.

“I’m so tired!”  “You’ve been really focused, Nagitsuki.”
“It’s been ages since I worked this hard at studying. Studying with someone you get along with is definitely different.”

Nagitsuki smiled. She looked genuinely happy, without a hint of worry. So innocent.

“Good job. Here, have this as a treat.” I handed her a juice. “What? Really? And it’s my favorite! Nishikikouji, you’re a genius!”

Nagitsuki exclaimed in delight, her voice echoing through the empty classroom we were borrowing for our study session. It was the classic “just the two of us in the classroom after school” scenario you often see in rom-coms.

By the way, in the original game, this study session route could eventually lead to something more, but I couldn’t let that happen. It wouldn’t be ethical, especially since we weren’t even dating.

“Nishikikouji, you’re spacing out. What’s up?”  “Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about what we should do next.”

“Next? Hmm, I think I’d like to keep studying for the test.”  “Of course. If you don’t get decent scores on the next test, it’ll be bad, right?”
“Yeah. Summer vacation boot camp is waiting for me if I don’t. I have to avoid failing.”

Nagitsuki’s face clouded over. Understandably so—summer vacation boot camp would be a nightmare.

“Alright, we’ve had a little break. Let’s tackle the next question.” Just as I said that my phone suddenly rang.

“Ah, sorry. I need to take this. Try working on this question while I’m gone—it’s a review of what we just covered.”  “Got it. I’ll give it a shot.”

Nagitsuki nodded and started moving her mechanical pencil. After confirming that, I stepped out of the classroom.

“Hello? Hananoi-san?”  “Oh, hi. Nishikikouji-kun, right? Sorry for calling so suddenly.”

The voice on the other end was unmistakably Hananoi Ayame’s. Just her voice alone was incredibly cute. Back in the game, the voice actress who played Ayame was amazing.

But still, why was she calling me at this hour? While I was happy to hear from her, I couldn’t think of a reason she’d call me. After all, I was just a background character, even if we’d exchanged emails.

“What’s up, Hananoi-san?”  “Well, I just felt like seeing you. I was wondering if we could meet if you’re free?”
“That’s pretty sudden.”  “I know, I’m sorry. I understand it’s short notice, but… I just really want to see you. Is that okay? You’re at school right now, aren’t you?”

Her voice was so sweet and meltingly soft that I almost reflexively said yes. Close call.

“Sorry, I’m in the middle of something right now. Can we do it another time?”  “Okay. Thank you. I’ll contact you again!”

And with that, the call ended. Well, since I turned her down, there probably won’t be a next time. 

But at least this way, my status as a background character was preserved. Even though the protagonist was out of the picture, I had no idea what might happen next, so it was probably for the best.

For now, I needed to focus on improving Nagatsuki’s grades. Motivated, I rolled up my sleeves.

At that moment, Hananoi’s words replayed in my mind. “You’re at school right now, aren’t you?”

…Wait, how did Hananoi know I was at school? The only one who knew I’d still be at school was Narita. Maybe she asked him? I convinced myself with that thought as I opened the classroom door.
