Episode 26: Confrontation with the Former Protagonist (Part 1)
It was lunch break. I gathered my courage and called out to the protagonist.
I was so nervous that I took five deep breaths and even drank some water.
Well, no matter what I did, the nerves wouldn’t go away, but still…
“Hey, do you have a minute?” I asked.
“A minute? Yeah, but… this is sudden,” he replied.
“Sorry about that. But I need to ask you something.”
“…What is it?”
“Uh, well, it’s hard to ask in the classroom. Could you come behind the gym with me?”
“Yeah, I can.”
He seemed unusually obedient. Why? I thought it would take more time to get him to agree, or at least some resistance.
“Alright, come on then,” I said.
“Got it.”
Saita followed me as I walked. Things were going too smoothly, which made me uneasy. What was his game? If he saw me as an enemy, he should’ve resisted, right?
We walked in silence until we reached the back of the gym. This might have been the most awkward moment of my life.
I led Saita to the spot we had arranged beforehand.
“So, about what I wanted to talk to you about,” I began.
“Yeah,” Saita said.
“It’s about the incident with your gym uniform,” I said.
“Ah, that… right.”
“I’m really sorry to bring this up, but I need to apologize. It wasn’t me who did it.”
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I spoke. The plan was to provoke Saita, knowing he had a short temper, to get him to react. I was trying to get under his skin with my words.
“Um…” I continued.
“I know it’s rude to say something like this to you, Saita, but I just have to say it: it wasn’t me.”
“R-right,” Saita stammered.
“Anyway, I have one question. We’ve never really talked, have we?”
“Well, no, we haven’t…”
“Right. So how do you think all these rumors started spreading?”
“Huh…?”
Saita looked confused, unsure how to answer.
“Saita, do you know anything about this?”
“Huh? Me?”
“Well, maybe it’s something someone from the past did. If that’s the case, I’m really sorry for dragging you into it.”
“No, no, it’s fine.”
“But seriously, who could have done this, I wonder?” I mused.
Saita just stared at me.
“Do you have any idea, Saita?”
“Huh?” he asked, surprised.
“Do you know who it is? The real culprit?” I pressed.
Suddenly, Saita’s face went pale.
