Chapter 38: Journey Finally Begins – A Small Everyday Scene on the Train
Inside the train, I gazed absentmindedly at the scenery flowing past the window.
Next to me, Kotone was glued to her phone, while sitting across from us were Sasaki-sensei and Sasaki.
A little further away, Umika and Nakano were chatting away happily. They’ve already gotten this close? The way girls form friendships is honestly a mystery to me…
“Hey, Nagisa-chan.”
Kotone suddenly looked up and whispered into my ear.
“What happened to your bruise? Did you get into another fight?”
“…Well, a lot happened.”
I hesitated slightly before answering.
“Eh? What happened?”
“How should I put it…? To put it simply, yesterday, I had a little fight with Asakawa…”
“Eh?! For real?!”
Kotone’s eyes widened in shock. Well, of course—she didn’t know anything about it until now.
“Yeah, it happened yesterday…”
“No way… So? How did it end?”
“Well… I lost.”
If this had been me two years ago, I would’ve been absolutely devastated.
That first night I fought Asakawa, in front of Kotone, I shouted, ‘I won’t let it end like this! Next time, I’ll definitely win!’ Thinking back on it now…
Aaaah, I want to die! Die, die, die, die! Past me, just disappear already! Why the hell did I say something so embarrassing and cringeworthy?!
But now, I don’t feel the urge to fight anymore. No matter the result, just knowing that it’s over is enough to bring me peace of mind.
Besides, they call that guy the strongest delinquent. Not just in DARK City—maybe even in the whole country, there might not be anyone who can beat him… It’s no surprise that I lost.
“Wait… Y-You lost?! No way…”
Kotone blinked in disbelief at my words.
“Yeah… But don’t tell Umika, okay? Or Sensei.”
“I don’t really care, but seriously, Nagisa-chan! Are you okay?!”
“Well, yeah, I’m fine… Like hell I am! It hurts like hell! His fists felt like getting run over by a truck!”
My voice involuntarily rose, catching the attention of Sasaki-sensei.
“Misaki! What’s with the sudden shouting?!”
Her sharp gaze was like she was deciding my fate on the spot. I hurriedly apologized.
“S-Sorry! It wasn’t on purpose!”
This woman… she’s terrifying. Even Asakawa, the strongest delinquent, and even the feral beast that is Kotone, don’t stand a chance against Ayano Sasaki.
“Then keep it down!”
“Y-Yes, ma’am!”
I let out a sigh of relief, realizing I had narrowly escaped doom.
“Nagisa-chan, you’re seriously weak against Sensei, huh~?”
Kotone teased, whispering in my ear again.
“Can’t help it… That woman is seriously scary…”
“Sensei, Yuki-chan, Kotone-chan, Misaki-kun! Here, try some of these!”
At that moment, Nakano handed over a few boxes to us.
One of them was filled with colorful, dango-like sweets. They looked pretty good.
“Oh, thanks.”
Sensei took a box from Nakano and placed it on the table.
“Anyone who wants some, feel free to take one.”
With that, she grabbed a sweet for herself and popped it into her mouth.
I took a red one. As expected, it was dango.
It had a faint strawberry aroma, and when I bit into it, strawberry jam oozed out.
Alright, next up—let’s try the purple one. That’s got to be grape-flavored!
For some reason, eating actual grapes doesn’t excite me much, but grape-flavored candy and drinks always taste amazing.
Is this the magic of food additives?
As the snacks disappeared, Umika and the others gradually quieted down, and before I knew it, all four of them had dozed off.
Seriously? You guys are pigs. Eat and then immediately fall asleep?
But honestly, our side wasn’t much different. Sasaki was fast asleep, leaning against Sensei’s shoulder, and both Kotone and Sensei had their eyes closed too.
Which means… out of all eight of us, I’m the only one still awake.
