Chapter 100: Plan

On the night after all the meetings had been concluded, Kai came to visit Nia’s room for some reason. 

“Sorry for coming to your room this late at night, but I have one request to ask.”

“…Humph.”

“Nia-sannnn? Why do you look so unhappy?”

“…Even though I was expecting something, but it turns out Kai is not going to do anything.”

“Don’t suddenly say something outrageous like that!”

Despite his words, Kai sat by the bed and held Nia’s hand tightly in his. The warmth spreading from their connected hands and Nia’s mood lifted up a bit. She then asked.

“So? What do you want to ask from me?”

“It’s about Kaltz’s holy sword.”

“The sword that emits bright light?”

“Yes, that one. Actually, when we fought at the church before, I set up a small mechanism in that sword and to activate that mechanism, we will need either my power or yours.”

“Does it has to be me and you? No one else can do it?”

“Yes. Only you and I can activate it.”

A period of silence ensued between them. Nia then gazed up to look at the face of the person she cherished the most. Then, she gripped their connected hands a little tighter and asked.

“…Kai, do you know the true nature of that sword?”

Nia remembered. She remembered the sword that remained stuck in the ground, unmoving, while Kaltz was on the verge of death. It was as if the sword had a will of its own. The magic power emitted from the sword was definitely of holy attribute, but…

“To be honest, I don’t know much about the holy sword either, but I can say this for sure.”

“What is it?”

“That sword is not just a pure holy sword. Sure, the sword houses holy power inside of it, but it can absorb black magic when I try to pour my magic power into it.”

Nia’s eyes widened a bit. Pouring black magic into the holy sword. This must be about the mechanism Kai mentioned earlier.

“Besides, it’s strange that Kaltz can still wield the holy sword. He already lost his qualification as a hero and he has become a ghoul too. That holy sword is confusing indeed. Anyway, what I want you to do…”

“Okay. Tell me. What do you want me to do?”

Kai tightened his grip on her hand as he continued. 

“If Kaltz joins the fight and appears before you…”

Kai wanted Nia to use the holy sword to kill him. For real, this time. The person Nia loved dearly had asked her to do that.

“Stab his heart with the holy sword… But his heart is no longer an ordinary heart! It’s a mercurial cube! According to Rielle’s experiment, that cube is unbreakable!”

“Any half-hearted method won’t be able to destroy it. That’s why we need the holy sword.”

Nia answered Chloe while pondering a bit. The cube should be placed in Kaltz’s heart, but the cube should had a limit. The cube that they had stolen before had a limit to how much life force it could contain. But Kaltz could keep resurrecting and regenerating his body to no end. It would be impossible to kill him unless they could eliminate the source of the life force first. Hence why, they had no other choice but to try the method Kai had suggested before.

“I need to grab the holy sword. Everyone, please help me.”

“Huh…? What do you mean you need to grab the holy sword? The sword can’t be used by someone who’s not chosen, you know?”

Alwyn explained, but Nia only shook her head as she said. 

“…I don’t believe that thing is chosen by the holy sword though.”

Nia said and that statement resonated with the others. Indeed. They all had their suspicions too. There was no way the holy sword still chose that thing as its master. Especially when the holy sword was a holy artifact revered by the church. The reason why Kaltz could still use the holy sword was either because the holy sword had been tainted by black magic or… That sword wasn’t the holy sword in the first place. Regardless, their main objective remained the same. While remaining cautious of Kaltz’s movement, the three of them listened to Nia’s explanation. And now that they have decided what they should do….

Nia joined her hands together and began to channel her magic power. 

“Night Mist.”

A black mist started spreading out from Nia’s feet. Kaltz’s field of vision was wrapped by the mist. He growled lowly, trying to remain vigilant. Then, he could hear the sharp whistle of arrows. 

“Mystic Shot!”

“GRRHAH?!”

The magic arrows that Brien had fired without chanting to avoid being detected by Kaltz flew through the mist. Kaltz’s eyes widened at the two arrows that seemingly came out of nowhere. However, his monstrous reflexes managed to save his life. He twisted his body to dodge the incoming arrow and used his sword to block the other arrow. However, the danger had just started. It was far from over.

“Wind Blast!”

“Dark Spear!”

Just after Kaltz barely dodged the arrows, spears made from black magic and arrows made from wind magic rushed toward him relentlessly. He tried to deflect the spear aimed at his heart with the holy sword, but the black spear was too powerful. Both weapons were imbued with immense magic power of opposing nature. Both magic collided, causing an explosion that forced Kaltz to stagger back several steps. 

“GRAAAHHH!!”

The arrow shot by Brien pierced Kaltz’s shoulder. Red blood splattered. A color that reminded everyone that in essence, Kaltz was still a human. 

“Dark Sight!”

But before he could recover from the shock of the searing wound on his shoulder, Kaltz felt another sharp pain as his back was stabbed by Chloe. The assassin had creeped behind him and stabbed two knives into Kaltz’s back. The knives were then driven upwards to literally tear Kaltz’s back apart. Blood gushed out from the open wound on his back.

“ARGHHHHHHHH!!”

Although his body could regenerate endlessly, but the pain still existed. The regeneration didn’t dull the pain. Even as a ghoul, Kaltz could still feel the pain from being stabbed. 

“GRRRHHH!!”

However, the pain seemed to fuel his rage even further. Kaltz swung the holy sword with all of his might, intent to kill Chloe. She quickly took another knife to block, but of course she couldn’t completely absorb all the force. Chloe was hurled far away by the impact of Kaltz’s blow. 

“I’LL KILL YOU!! KILLLLL!! I WILL KILL YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The monster, now devoid of any rationality, lunged at Chloe. However…

“GRRHH?!”

He was blocked by an invisible barrier and staggered backward from the impact. Alwyn’s voice could be heard from a distance. 

“Aura Wall!”

And at the same time, arrows and spears came raining down on Kaltz. 

“GRRHHH?!?!”

Even though his body was regenerating, but he couldn’t move properly from the searing pain. Spears and arrows lodged in his left arm and right leg. His beastly screams echoed as Chloe bit her lower lip and leaped into the air. 

In order to carry out the plan that Nia had formed…!!

“DIE ALREADY, YOU MONSTER!”

Leaping over the wall created by Alwyn, Chloe readied her knife. Her target was Kaltz’s right arm. The sharp sound of blade slicing through the skin and bones proved just how sharp Chloe’s knife was. Blood sprayed from the severed part. Kaltz’s right arm flew through the air along with the holy sword and then… His holy sword slipped from the grasp of Kaltz’s severed right arm.

“ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

The right arm that Kaltz had been using to hold the holy sword had been severed by Chloe. A roar or pain echoed from him and Chloe stepped back to catch her breath. Her role was done here. And now… It was time for Nia to shine. 

“Goodbye, Hero.”

“GR-GRRHH?!”

“A pitiful human who can never become the protagonist until the very end.”

Nia, who had seemingly appeared out of thin air, had gripped the holy sword that had fell tot he ground. She drove the sword into Kaltz’s heart, the mercurial cube, which was already in tatters. Then, as instructed by Kai, she infused the sword with black magic. She drew as much magic as possible and poured it all into the holy sword. Within the next moment, Nia finally realized what kind of mechanism Kai had planted inside the holy sword. Only Nia could understand it since her power and Kai were peas of the same pod. It was… A curse!

The holy sword pierced the cube and the holy sword was engulfed in dark flames…

“-?! NIA!!!!”

“NIA-SAN!!”

“Wai-?! What’s happening now?!”

And soon enough, a blinding light covered both Nia and Kaltz.
