Chapter 28: !!!

A Few Days Later, in a Large Field Near the School.

Thanks to Keltz-sama’s arrangement, I was able to leave the royal palace together with Rina without being interrogated first. While it was true that I had saved Rhea-sama from the assassination attempt, but because of my status as a commoner, I was still at the risk of being suspected by the nobles. Luckily, Keltz-sama was quick-witted enough. He quickly arranged for our safe and smooth departure. 

In fact, I was quite disliked by the nobles at Central Magic School. The more the surrounding nobles became aware of my power, the more I realized only bad things would happen to me out of it. Keltz-sama’s judgment was correct. But… His meaningful expression that he had shown me before we left still bothered me. I hoped I was only imagining things. 

And so, a few days had passed. Now, our party received a quest from the Student Council to hunt down King Bird. Apparently the monsters had been causing significant damage to the farmers at the field near the school grounds. 

“Kanato! I’ve put up a barrier to prevent the crops from being damaged!”

“Jeff-sama! Thank you!”

A barrier created by the joint efforts of Mia-sama and Jeff-sama encased the crops. With this, even if the King Bird went berserk, the crops wouldn’t get damaged. 

“KUKURUYUKKKK!”

The King Bird that had been rampaging excitedly in the fields flapped its wings vigorously and took off into the air. King Bird looked just like a chicken at first glance. I was a bit confused when I saw it but I quickly regained my composure and began chanting a spell.

“Surface-To-Air Missile…”

A missile launcher was summoned onto the ground a small distance away from me. Without any hesitation, I shouted. 

“Fire!!”

I yelled and flames erupted from the back of the missile as the missile surged toward King Bird at breakneck speed. 

“Kuku…. Kuku… Kukuruyuk!! Wha-What’s that?! Darn it! This is bad!!”

The King Bird cried incomprehensibly. However, the moment the missile hit the bird, the bird’s panicked yell turned into a death cry instead. 

“KUKUUUUU!! I’m goneee!!”

Unable to keep flying, the bird fell helplessly and as if she had been waiting for this moment, Elena-sama quickly kicked the ground and swung her sword to finish the bird. 

“Haaaaaa!!”

Me, Rina, along with Jeff-sama and Mia-sama could only watch in astonishment as Elena-sama performed successive swordsmanship in a fast movement. She was moving too quickly for our eyes to follow. 

Even though I had used a surface-to-air missile, but I had reduced its power considerably, allowing Elena-sama to dismantle the bird while still maintaining the shape of its body.

In no time, the King Bird, now reduced into a mere poultry, fell neatly onto the field in clean, divided parts. 

Elena-sama smiled, seemingly satisfied at the chicken meat she had cut.

King Bird was a monster powerful enough that you had to be Level 4 or higher to defeat it. It would be difficult for a Level 5 party to defeat it without damaging the crops but we were able to achieve that amazing feat thanks to everyone’s combined efforts. 

I clenched my fist, satisfied at our accomplishment and smiled smugly when Rina tugged at my sleeve. 

“Hm?”

“I…. I didn’t do anything….”

“….”

Rina had a miserable expression on her face. Tears welled up in her eyes. 

Come to think of it… My little sister hasn’t done anything with the hunt, huh? Her presence alone is enough to bring me comfort but it seems she won’t be satisfied with only that. 

I tried to comfort her but Mia-sama quickly rushed over to Rina. 

“It’s alright. Rina is a healer so when the time comes, your aid will be very essenti—Ouch-!”

Mia-sama’s foot sank into the wet soil of the field, causing her to fall. Rina’s expression immediately brightened. 

“I will heal you!~♫”

After defeating the King Bird, we enjoyed our lunch under the shade of a big tree a little away from the field. 

“MMmh… Mmh… Ah… This dish called ‘onigiri’ is so deliicous~”

“Umm… Jeff-sama. Please refrain from eating my onigiri without permission.”

“Ahahaha!~ Well, other people’s food always tastes better than your own, isn’t it? Hehe!~”

“You’re the worst….”

I pulled away from Jeff-sama, frowning at his action. 

Mia-sama then handed her own lunch box and Jeff-sama’s lunch box to me before following Jeff-sama’s example and took one of my onigiri for her to eat. 

It seems the onigiri I made suits Mia-sama’s palate.

I started sharing my food with them because they seemed to be interested in my food. At first, they only stared at my food but then, they started drooling and so, we ended up exchanging lunch boxes like this. 

Well, this arrangement is good for me too since I get to eat both of their lunch boxes. In fact, their food uses ingredients with higher quality than mine. I heard both of their families are quite wealthy. Well, judging from the quality of food they have, that rumor must be true. 

I had a bittersweet smile on my face as I ate their lunch when Jeff-sama opened his mouth to speak. 

“But you know, this world has become quite dangerous, huh? I never expected someone would be bold enough to try to assassinate the First Princess at a party hosted by the royal family….”

Mia-sama then continued on.

“Indeed. Not to mention, Rhea-sama is our future queen. I heard she’s not only beautiful but she also has great character and is very smart too. People have high hopes for her both in our kingdom and outside.”

Mia-sama said as she wiped Rina’s mouth. 

Jeff-sama then gave me a thumbs-up before speaking excitedly. 

“But luckily enough, Kanato was there to protect Rhea-sama. Harry couldn’t even do anything. He must be so ashamed of his incompetence that he ended up running away almost immediately. What a pathetic guy. Even though his fiancée was right there by his side…”

Jeff-sama said while eating my onigiri. 

Jeff-sama… I don’t think that’s something you should say while eating my onigiri….

But still, he’s got a point. His words are not wrong. 

However, I realized my little sister was looking down. Her face was devoid of any emotions. Her eyes seemed to lack its usual luster even. 

“I believe there’s another reason why Harry suddenly got angry and left without checking on his fiancée first….”

Rina murmured, which in turn earned her a reaction from Mia-sama. 

“Another reason…?”

But instead of explaining her reasoning, Rina put on a fake smile instead. 

“It’s nothing! Ahahaha~ Come on, let’s continue eating!~”

Rina said as she resumed eating her lunch with great vigor. 

Seeing Rina eating with so much excitement, Elena-sama relaxed her cheeks into a gentle smile before turning her attention to me. 

“Kanato, about today’s training…”

“Yeah?”

“My father has something to discuss with you. So for today, I will train with Rina without you.”

“…Alright.”

And so, without talking about the incident at the party again, we ate our lunch heartily. 

Jeff-sama and Mia-sama’s lunch boxes are so delicious…. Honestly, if I consider the cost of the ingredients between our lunch boxes, I’m actually the one profiting from our deal.

We shared the King Bird meat to the villagers and divided the rest of the meat between ourselves. Me, Rina and Elena-sama rode in a carriage together to get to the Fibel family’s residence with Hannah-sama(Mia-sama’s big sister) as our driver. 

In no time, I was back to this gorgeous mansion. A sight that I seemed to see several times a week by now. 

I wonder what Keltz-sama wishes to talk with me about? 

I parted ways with Rina and Elena-sama. The two of them seemed really excited as they walked to the training arena while I was guided to the luxurious reception room by Hannah-sama. 

Hannah-sama knocked on the door several times. 

“Kanato-san is here.”

Few seconds passed without a response. 

Feeling worried, Hannah-sama repeated her words. 

“Kanato-san is here.”

Another few seconds of silence.

But then, the door suddenly swung open vigorously. 

“Wha-?!”

There stood not the handsome middle-aged duke with blonde hair I was familiar with but two beautiful young girls. The two girls had lustrous pink hair, one with long hair and the other with short hair. The First Princess, Rhea-sama, the one with long hair, cast cold and dignified eyes toward me, while the second princess, Selene-sama, had a bewitched expression. 

At that moment, a mysterious fragrance, a sweet, honeyed scent, one that smelled different from Rina and Elena-sama, gently wafted into my nose, causing me to feel excited.
